of I’ichegrn, and was a great
favorite among the French to

much to headmired fur its wit
and simplicity.
Courage not Constitutional.
Drink Soldiers, noble is your
plan.
E’er dredful on the foe you
pour:
Though I can,sober,fight my man
i\ly bottle gives me strength
for four.
Then fill the bumper, let it pass,
I am never weary of my glass,
He that to battle sober goes,
Will dimly shine in future storv;
He views the dangers of the blows,
The toper only views the glory,
Then till &c.
As wine the heart of man can cheer
And raise him to a brighten fel
low,
He, that when sober shakes for
fear,
Makes others shake when he
gets mellow.
Then fill &c.
Tins world’s a wondrous work and
line,
Yrt io my mind the great Crea

Was some what sparing of his
wine.
And mighty lavish of his water.

I was wise though not to bid the

With ruby color'd necto* - flow,
Our drinking else your world had
dried.
To dust and ashes long ago.

THE HUNGRY ARAB.
A Tale from the Tohfct al Mo
jailis.
An Arab, who was travel
s; np through the desert, was
t: i loft exhanfteri with hunger
- iid hiill, when he unexpect
ed ; perceived a man who had
Ipread lis cloak upon the
giound and \%s taking his re
} ad with an excellent appetite.
’J he Arab fa luted him, accor
ding to custom, and (at down
br !ide him. “ W hence comest
(hou ? a Iked the Ilranger.
“From the village,” replied
t; e famifhea Arab hoping that
I t fhouid be invited to par
ti ke. “ Hft thou seen my
I’.oufe ?” continued the foim.
cr. “ Yes,” answered the A
rai); “ it is beautiful and niag
nificient ; its ioof reaches to
thefky, and its court is delight ,
ful as the plains o( Paradise.”
Haft thou seen my lhep
berd’s dog ?
O, yes ! Me watches thy
herds and thy flocks with fuel)
vigilance that not a wolf dares
to apfloach them.
Halt theu seen my son
Ch a id ?
\ es ; he was at school, and
vas reading tc fits mailer in the
Koran w i:h gnat fluency, and
in a molt impn ffive tone.
Mow is Chalici’s mother ?
As well as thou canst vifh ;
and their is not a creature, eith
ei male or lit male, in a.l Ara
bia, who manages a houle bet.
t< r, or can weave more ski I ful
ly, or beats a higher character
for mildnels arui benevolence.
1 aft thou ado seen my
canid, that cairies out water.
Yes; it is in the belt contri
tion.
The man hcaiing all this
welcome intelligence concern
ing his wife, his son, and his [
piopeiiy, wan so lejoiced that
like began to eat with still great
er appetite, but offered the
Clanguifhing Arab not a single
morfcl. This unfortunate
wretch, tormented with the
pangs of hunger, was now a.
shamed of his flattery, and
said to himfelf, “ I must attack
this covctuous and infatible
fellow in another way.” At
this moment a dog came up;
allured by the smell of the vic
tuals, he tsood still and wag
ged his taill.
“ Y'es,” said the hungary
Arab, “if thy dog were still
alive, hewould have wagged his
tail exaftly in the same man
ner.” —“Alas ! “exclaimed the
man, “ is my dog dead?
How did he perifti ? ’
By drinking the blood of
thy camel! said the Arab.
What! did my camel die
too ?
No, replied the Arab, they
killed it for the funeral dinner
of Chalid’s mother.
O, heavens ! is Chalid’s mo
ther dead ?
Yes, answered the Arab.
Os what dilorder did flic
die?
Os what disorder ? she
struck her head wiih such vio
lence against Chalid’s tomb,
that she died of the wound.
What ! my son dead to ?
A violent earthquake demol
flicd thy house, said the Ar
iab, and he was buried beneath
ihe ruins.
Grief and horror at this mr
lancholy intelligence, depriv
ed the stranger of his appetite ;
lie ceased to eat, role from his
repast, left iris p.ovifions be
hind him, and hastened home
with all poflibie dispatch, while
the hungary Arab sat down
and legalcd himfelf.
