THE present Proprietor

to tbe public in general, through
his imreiniited attention to busi

JOHN DOUGHERTY.
Mr. DOUGHERTY.
IN your paper of last Thurs
day, your readers bjve remarked
an extraordinary production sign,
ed a “ Georgian,” professing him
self to be an admirer, as he <;b’
viotislv is the eulogist, of the ad
ministration nf John MilFdge.—
What might have been the incite
ment of this writer, to come for
ward at this time in high sound
ing panegyric, he artfully studies
to conceal, although the Repub
licans of this city (and I lay a stress
upon the term) cannot but infer
his defign—lt is not wished to
provoke a newspaper investigati
on into t fee political conduct
of Mr. Milledge during his ad
ministration, but if it be his dis
position to throw an electioneering
glare, it is hoped lie will have the
spirit to declare the fact, and be
may be accommodated— I.i the
m ’ Rti time however, let him again
consider, the very preamble to
his piece, and in considering it,
let him refer to the cons; itution of
our country, and decide noon the
propriety of holding two appoint
ments during the same period.—
As he talks loudly of the “ con-fist
ency and firmness” of Mr. M‘s
public conduct ; he is advised to
reperuse the communication of
his ex-t.xcellencv 10 the last Le
gislature, and then say whether
some or one of the acts he has
confirmed by his signature, carries
in its face the marks of either
“ consistency or of firmness.” As
to tlie puri y of Mr, M’s motives,
the writer ol this does not wish to
be forced to detail, in order to the
deduction c( inference. How
ever heartily lie disapproves of
parts of Mr. M’s political conduct
and intrigue, he is not his person*
al enemy—lie lias nothing to fear
or to hope from him.—ln regard
to the “ mipotency” of Mr. M’s
political opponents (if they are
the “ enemies alluded to”)— take
care Mr. “Georgian”—that gen
tleman did not depend upou his
own intrinsic merits, in his various
promotions, aud you know the fact
—circumstances are Sresh in our
memory—l must stop here before

When, after the British in
structions of November 1793,
th* ir ships commenced depreda
tions on out commerce, and the
indignation ©f all America was
roused, Fisher Ames in one of
bis frothy declamations declared
‘‘ vee must drsiu ourselves, like the
tortoise within our shell"— his
splendid nonsense , recommends a
different course ; Britain with
her 360 millions of dollars annual
expenditure, and her 700 ships of
wa is reduced to the of
destruction—and Ames wishes •’
the United States to undertake
to accomplish with our 3 2 or
20,000,000 dollars, what Eng
land has not been able to efi’ect
with thirty times the annual re
sources! 1 lie real object olAmes
is a monarchy and a lisle ; —ais
s)cophancy and detestable poli
tics he conceives will ({uulil’y
him to be a courtier ; and a mad
project of war or of extravagance
would be highway to monarchy.
The excoriation which vve
have given Fisher Ames's splen
did nonsense has had its effect ;
the irritability of the New-Eng
iand royalists speaks both their
mortification and their conviction
that ishePs nonsense rather mars
