*is not in vain that I had announced this -ei*ult in my tarmor proclamations. I h ive since received advices that the same troops have continued their mutrement— they entered at dusk into the city of Cer veia, having completely detested the fac. tiouists. JOSEF CRUZ MULLER. Extract of a letter tinted Reus, May It. •• The troops of Vails directed their march to Mount Dlancti, the 9th, in the morning. The factious left that place tvt.tl repaired to Kapluga de Fiancoli, where they were attacked with the bay onet bv a company of our first battalion •if Chasseurs, commanded by the brave Don Pedro Sards J 600 of the factious most shamefully c»uceuled themselves in the bushes, and our valiant troops expe rienced no to*s( one Swiss only being wounded. The loss on the side of the factious is not yet known. / " After the marching of the troops from J Vails, the factious, who hud been dispers ed in the Cole de Santa Christina, entered the former place, at 4 r. m. and surprised some of the militia, when the rest repair ed to the castle for security. The fac tious retired ul9 in the evening, but yes terday they again returned; the people defended themselves, and the factious af ter plundering the town, retired to the mountains, '• This morning we were in great alarm here, which was occasioned by a report that the factious were to take away the ] ♦’onsti'u'ion Slone. Orders were imme diately irautu!, to prevent their doing so, should tho attempt be made; ns we cal culated on the arrival of 5500 men at Tarragona who would assist us in case of necessity: We have our militia and peo ple well armed, who are determined to die in the defence of the Constitution. "In the Priong and in Monroig, several parties of the factious had joined together, and here besieged 28 soldiers of Canta bria in the place of Prat Dip. The. valiant commandant D. Jose Pallisen de Porrena marched at 5 a. m. from this place and diieeted his route to Prat, where he arriv ed at 1a m,; but he wus riot abio to bring the factious to action, but has rescued the soldiers of Cantabria.'* Another letter—Hens, May 15. " Deaii Sir—The present is intended to announce to you, that our troops and militia have returned to Vails. The fac tious of Publet having withdrawn to the nearest bushes as son.* as it was known that they were pursued. A column of 2000 •veterans having arrived at Vails the people and militia were allowed to retire to their homes ; and on Monday, at 1 p. m. 365 of cur first battalion, which was composed cf 600,entered this city, after a fatiguing campaign of 8 days in the mountains. The .inhabitants went out to meet them on fyheir return, and hailed them with the greatest joy and enthusiasm. •' On Monday, In this city, the edict of April in last year, was proclaimed—since which the factious in this vicinity have pre sented themselves to the magistrates with their arms, and all now is quiet. If the leaders do not again attempt to mislead the weak minded (although there may still exist some at Puolet, who have been deceived by Trapanse, who for that pur. pose had ordered to he placed in one of' the windows of the Espluga de Franeoli, n crucifix, and in an other a figure of St. Michael) all v. ill be dispersed by the di vision ol 2000 men who aie in Vails, pro ceeding from Barcelona. " In Montserrat, about 200 factious have risen and laid siege to the town of Igualada. The town defended itself until having received reinforcements from dif ferent points, they succeeded in destroy ing one hall of the factious. *• To secure our tranquillity, nothing is now wanting but to put to death the au thors of those misfortunes. Yours, &c. in haste.” * FROM THE REPUBLICAN. LATEST FROM ENGLAND. Captain Harris, of the ship Lady Gal latin, arrived here last evening in 35 days l from Milford Haven, has politely furnish ed us with u file of papers containing London dates to 3lst May—eleven days later than before received. There now appears to be a prospect of an amicable arrangement between Rus- siu and the Porte. The latest dispatch from Vienna contains what is called a full confirmation of the important fact, that the forces of the Sublime Porte arc evacuating the principalities of Moldavia ind Wallacliis. The distress in Ireland increases. In ♦he Waterford Chronicle of 30th May, it is stated that the putrid carcase of a cow which had died of a loathsome disease was most voraciously siezed upon by some * poor creatures. London, May 27/A.—The following is / en extract of s private letter from Con stantinople, dated April 25th, received this morning by an eminent house t« the City j " 1 take this opportunity of stating a piece ol information I have had from good authority, which will no doubt dispel ail fears as to the probability of wtr. Tho Porte has finally consented to evacuate TVallacltia and Moldivia ; by this tine the troops are withdrawn. The public feeling will not at present admit of the administration of these provinces being 'given to the Greeks ; an ariangement has therefore been made that it will be given to twelve natives of those provinces, to be chosen from their respective Chiefs. This Provisional Government shall have eight liepre sen (Mice* fixed io Constantinople, Apparently as hostages for the conduct of the Administrators. These people arc .expected heiC very shortly. 1 orkey bat • ingMhus acceded' to the* principal point demanded by. He is then expected to go to s Congress, at which the affairs of Turkey will be discussed, and an arrangment be concluded. Tur key is said to have shewn some disposi tion to yield certain points, and nrgocia (ions which will have the effect either ol retarding or preventing war, are said to be going on. " Such are the strange rumours here. The funds, at noon to-day, were 891.15c.“ Wc have received Brussels Papers to the 24th inst. Accounts from Trieste, of the 7th state, that the Greeks have sent an expedition from Hydra against S.tlo- uiclti, and add, on the authority of roer- rantde letters, that " the whole Island of Negropnnt is now in the possession of the Greeks, and its dependent neighbouring isles have also declared in their favour.' The following are extracts: " Vienna, May 11.—Letters worthy of credit asy, that the negociatinna between the Servian Chiefs and the Pacha of Bel grade, are broken ofT, and that the en trance of Turkish troops into Servia will be looked upon by the Servians as the sig nul for war. Paris, May 24.—The Duke de Cazes who was about to set out for Denmark, is detained at Paris, by the serious indis position of the Dutchess. The following is the general result of the elections ; Deputies named by the Royalists 54 Deputies named by the Opposition 32 Difference in favour of the Rovalist 22 Journal des Debats. Corfu, April 20.—An Act of the Par liament of the United States of the Ionian Isles, fixes the punishment to be inflicted upon the infractors of Ionian neutrality, llie subjects of the said States, taking an active part tor or against the belligerent parties in Epirus, Pcleponesus, or the ad jacent islands, countries or seas, shall be exiled from the Ionian Isles, and their dependencies, and their property, real or personal, confiscated. Zante, April 16.—The system of non trality which has been proclaimed in the Ionian Isles, goes directly to the confisca tion of the property of all the Ionian No bles suspected of being favourable to the cause of (he Greeks, who are combating for their independence. Several of these Nobloa, known by their fortunes and their principles, have been obliged to expatriate and seek for safety in the Insurgent is lands. Amongst them are the Count Me- taxa, a rich proprietor, M. Anzulacato, known for his wealth and honorable em ployment of his fortune, and the venerable Archbishop of Cephalonia/Typeldo known for his piety and his learning. Vienna, May 11—Wc do not expect the definite decision of the Emperor Alex ander, on the affairs of (he East, untill the 20th or the 23d of May j and that determination would not be taken till alter the arrival of M. de Tatitscheff. Nearly all arc persuaded that this determination, will be favourable to peace, and that the Emperor will commit his interests to the Mediating Powers. We are assured that, on the 18lh of April, tha P van had transmitted a most pacific answer to the Note addressed by the Austrian lntcrnuncio and the English Ambassador to the Ottoman Porte on tho 8th. The evacuation of Moldavia and Wallacliis was to commence on the first of May, when, it was added, tho Porte would declare its election of the new Hos podars. Extract of a Private letter. Lintx, May 11.—"A person who is worthy of belief, from Vienna, has assured us that, during the multiplied confcren ces which occurred in that capital, be tween Prince Mctternich and the General de Tatischcff, the question had not only a reference to the relations between Russia and Turkey, but more especially to the general State of Europe, and the dangers to be apprehended from hostilities in the East, connected with the tranquility of o ther countries. •• Prince di Mctternich dwelt, above, all, upon the inconveniences ’which are likely to ensue from a war, and the neces sity of combining measures among the the Great Powers for defeating all revo lutionary project* in the event of war be ing found inevitable at last.” May, 30.—Letters have been received from Lisbon, which communicate the ioi- f iort&nt intelligence of a conspiracy hatr- ng been formed there, to overthrow the Constitutional System, but which wasde tected sufficiently early to prevent the ill consequences which might otherwise have attended it. It appears that the first step taken by the Government, on being made acquainted with the plot, was to issue a Decree f° r the Suspension of the Habeas Corpus, Act, which his been in force ever since tbe adoption of tho Constitutional Svstem. This measure led to the arrest of 26 persons ; some of the advices men. lion, that 28 persons were taken up, who were said to t>6 implicatrd in the coospi racy. All these individuals were exam, ioed privately, six of whom it was deter, mined should be immediately sent out of the kingdom. It is understood that none ttf them were persons of any distinction. Thia main point having been aatialsctorily arranged, tho others will follow as a matter of course. The accounts from Naples also confirm the former tumour of a Congress being a- bout (o be held at Floceuce. This proves to be correct ; and orders have beeu for- warded to the latter city to make the ne- ceasaiy arrangements lor the immediate assembling of the Congress. It is ever gratifying to the ingenuous mind, and it imparts at least partial consolation to the survivors, to evince a respect to the worth of a departed citizen, whose public or social virtue* entitle him to the encomium of his fellow-citi zens. James JoairaToir, a native of our state, from early life an officer highly estimated, and late commander of this regiment, is no more, The recollection of his distinguished worth as an officer long devoted to the interest of the re. giment—to the interest of our city and of our country, requires an appropriate testimonial ol the opinion entertained of him as a worthy asso ciate citizen soldier. The officers therefore, of the 1st regiment, will wear crsjie bn the left arm for the space of thirty days, as an evidence of respect to the memory of James Johnston, late lieutenant colonel commandinf the 1st re giment Georgia militia.
