It wai al»0 .erroneously stated in the tamo pa per, that Gen. flearbOrn, had been nntnl- Dated minister to Peru. They alsp ex pected a fiigate of 44 guns in a few inputba.—Mvocate, , PROM SMYRNA, a A friend has just into our handa a let- ' ter from Smyrna, dated May 27. Prom the following extract#, which may be de pended upon, (coming as it does from a repectubie American gentleman,) it will seen that the European accounts have Texugerated the horrid excesses of the urks towards the Greeks. The unpa rallelled massacre at Scio is confirmed, "Smviina, 27th May, 1822. " Dear Sir—Our situation in this coun try remains about as distressing as ever; in fact, more so, Formevly we wm only doomed to witness daily murders in our. streets; now, we see poor women aqd children turn from their homes, and sold to the Turks in Asia. The daughter ol.u poor Gieek peasant sold to a Turkish Aga, jnay pass; but a young lady, brought up in all the luxury of affluence, sold to a rich Turkish buor, and with him to inha bit the hills and plains of Asia—a mother brought thus far with her children, com panion# of her misery—still then witnes sing tl;e sale ol one poor child alter the Other, to be scattered over the oountjy—• viliui can equal this ? death is mithiiigjo it. Strict orders have been, giveu tb pens' vent the sale of any of their slave# to any Christian ! a few, very lew, have been bought by the force of money. All the' fnen in Scio have been killed, and all the women and children made slaves. Not content with this, the government at Con stantinople are beheading the Sctots as fast as they can find them, although re sidents in that place for thirty or forty years. “The Turks, in one shortycar have re turned all the barbarity of former ages. I linuw them no longer. Men with whom 1 have been much acquainted since my residence in this country have changed as day from night. If a deadljflbnmity to all CbiLtians—-the infringement of the cap! tulaiiuns of every nation in Turkey with 4he Porte—an arrogance as great us ridi,- toll-us—do not soon bring about a war I shall be much mistaken. The general opinion is, that a war with Russia will not tuke place. Something certainly has long delayed ii: I presume the disposi tioti of all the cabinets of Europe; to a- Yoid war in any way, or with any people. At last, l fear, they will be driven to it, in which case, this country will be no re sidencefit for an European —A short time ] think, must clear that matter. The Turkish and Greeks fleets are in sight of each other. The Turks have by great odds the greatest force ; they do not, however, appear disposed to attack tl\e Greeks ; and the Greeks wait to find them at anchor, in hopes of being able to burn tham ; and for our misfortune, thyy are no further ofT than the mouth of the Bay of Smyrna. If the Turks, through their bad conduct, should board their fleet, then wo may expect a great uproar here. If they engage at sea, it appears to me utterly impossible the Greeks should succeed. The Turks have 6 line of battle ship, 11 large frigates, 13 to 20 corvettes, and 20 gun boats; the Greeks in two di visions of 40 each, principally brigs of a 250 tons, a few ships say 8 or 10 of 4 to 5JJ0 tons.”— Com. Mv. —«■— We have perosed the official report of Lieut. Abbot’s trial lately published at Washington; but have not been able to de teet any material difference between if and the one previously published by the friends of Lieut. Abbut, which we have also read. Our opinion il not changed by the se. cond publication. It has from the first been our impression that the evidence to which alone the Court was bound to attend, goes# very little way to establish the charges exhibited by Lieut. A. so for as they relate to Capt. Hull. The wit nesses on all sides testify that in every instance wherein public property was tried in the construction o: his buildings, it was replaced—The complaints on this score are indeed so trivial that they were rninre fitted for the investigation of a court cf Pi poudre than of a dignified military ■tribunal. There are other points, howe ver, of greater magnitude, to judge ol which require# other lights than those shed upon them by the evidence produced to the court. As we are not prepared to discusB these; and as such discussion would be improper pending the investiga- t ioti ol C:ipt. Hull’s administration by a luurt ot Enquiry, we aliall'forbear any further remarks for the present. As respects Lieut. Abbot; it is not proved that he was actua'ed by private D ue, but on the contrary it appears that acted from a sense of duty. That he was too hasty in the business, however, is proved by the fact ol hi# making a propo sition to Lieut. Percival to withdraw his charges against Captain llul^ upon a cer tain condition. We have faid b fore, that the arrest of Abbot instead of Capinin Hub. was a mea sure not calculated to i one a' the truth. We tlfnik sfi slid ; ih ug'i so far «« Capt. Iforter ia euncumd, uc was jujliiimJ by his orders from the ftrerrtgjy af the Navy in taking that step. It was no doubt the intention of the Secretary ill tending rib- tain Portrr in examine Into the circum •tam es of the acrusltlotn, to eave,' Ifpoa. ailtle. the expense of a Court Martial; hpt it unliirtuimely happened jn this case, as it generally dors where more regard is paid to economy then prudence, that this sfcourse has cost the country thednublo ; nl jvliat it ivuuld have done If a court had been ordered upon ('aid, II, in the first instance.*—Mrfalk Herald: k billing.—The New Haven Herald, avuiupht up, republican paper, from an old lederet journal, has opened thu Cbn- necticut campaign for President. The editor has been at Washington Inst win ter, with the Editor of the Franklin Ua- zette, ami somehow, he is also a great partisan far the army candiifCte, but with this difl'ecence ; the Franklin Gazette came out boldly fur Mr, Culliouq,' and Wont listen to any opposition. The Herald 5 should be told that Mr.Calhoun and ano ther me nber of Congress had once pislols primed and ground measured! but the in terference of friends prevented the final resort to the trigger. 1 V’ A itlore substantial ground (or oppos ing any candidate must be found than the acts ol their youth, when "the spring blood' ran Iridic through their vein#.” If twen ty years is not a statute bf limitation suf ficient in itself, then is age, mellowed temper, and chastened experience all a farce. ’ However, so far we will go wills the New Haven Register mill uu further.
