M<i^t(]chutetti Lfgit hit ure.—The Com

The Anniversary of the decisive Battle of
New-Orleans, says the Charleston Courier,
was celebrated at Nashville, (Tennessee,)
on the 8th ult. in handsome style. After a
military parade, the citizens and soldiers
assembled at the Court I'ouse, where a
complimentary address tn General Jackson
wu delivered hy Mr. Foster; to which the
.General replied in a neat and appropriate
Planner. Among the gueata at the public
dinner, which was served up at the Wash

'Carroll, with many others who shared in
the dangers and glory of the day they had

‘ Gothic Pvmihment.—It ii humiliating to

dear, to record instances like the following.
But whilst we do it, we protest against the
infliction of any punishment so revolting
as this:—" A man was lately convicted in

Montreal, Jan. 8- Casualties—A
short time age Ihre.e squaws were en
uring down Ihe Cliateaugusy river in
a baik canne loaded with venison.—
At the foot of a rapid which they had
descended, they came in contact with
ice that barred 'he river, their canoe
was broken and entangled in the ice,
and they Inund themselves unable to
reaclilhe shore. Some ol Hie inhabitants
perceiving them succeeded in getting
two of them on land, but nut having
room fur the third, they were obliged
to leave her in her perilous silualiun
with her babe in her arms. A man
ol the name ol Willard generously a',
tempted to save, them, but he lust his
own life, having broken through the
ice, under which he was borne by the
current- The poor squaw, conscious
of her danger, resolved on nn effort
to save her child at least, she placed
it on the ice in its cradle, and giving
it a good push, sent it near the shore.
The squaw herself, in a few minutes
after, was landed by the indefatigable
exertions of the two men in the canoe.
Not long after, a person skating ob
served a body beneath. The neigh
bours, and among the rest poor'Wil
lard’s wife, repaired to the place. The
ice being free from souw, and very
clear, the afflicted woman recognized
through it the features of her husband.
The body was taken up.
In the township of Godmanchester,
a person named Moore, drove his cow
to the Trout River to drink; the anim
al disliking the appearance of the ice,
which had been formed during the
night, suddenly wheeled round to re
turn towards the stable, and by the
luiee of Ihe movement threw her own
er, who wa r . endeavouring to push her
forward, into a large kettle in which
ashes were at Ihe moment boiling.---.

There is a very Imnest suit ol
gentleman in Bo-ton, who putilishes
a weekly rcpor'ot sales and ship news
in that city. He dues very well in
that vocation, but he sometime* tra
vela out of his proper lirritory intn
strange lands, and he ia then sure to
make sad work in his weekly sheet.
He has lately been trying Iris hand a
making a President of the D. States,
but did badly in that attempt, nnd his
last publication contains the following
decisive settlement of the question ol
oeace or war bet ween France Saapain.
It ia one of the bc-t specimens of Bo.
badiliam extant*—L’Aor, Mercury.
Ji War, between the French Sol
diers and the Constitutionalists in
Spain, is impossible. That mighty
Engine, whirh sweeps all obstacles in
■ ;s way, THE PUBLIC OPINION
of both Nations, will not allow a war
to exist, even for a moment.
If the French government should
be mail enough to declare the War,
the Spanish General need only post
liis Army near Ihe French Army, out
of the reach of Cannot Shot; order hi-
outposts to fraternize with the French
Suldiers, in other words to linil
them, as brethren, engaged in ih<-
same holy cause of liberty; then put
up great signs, in the French Lan
guage, with the Mottos "Long live tile
French Republic,” “Long live the
Brave French soldiery,” "Long live
the Victors of Marengo,” “Long live
die Victors of Ulm.ol Jena,” Lung
live uur Ficncli Brethren.” Then
taking advantage of a day when the
wind will best carry the sound from
the Spanish to the French Camp,
strike up, with all their Music, the
Marseilles hymn and the National
sung "La victoire est a nous;” and
then order his Soldiers to march wirit
their Muskets Reversed, right down
to the French Camp.
In an instant, the French troops
will unite with the Spanish troops and
march upon Paris, (o put down the
Bourbons.
Such appears to me to be the irre
sistibie result from tho force of Pub
lic opinion.

The influence of Artificial J5rit;i.
tions in certain Diseases incidental
to t/ie Human liody— Dr. Jenner has
never appeared b-fore the public bu'
on three grand aubjrcti, all novel unrl
ingenious. The first is the naturul
history of the cuckoo, very curious, ns
a remarkable anomaly of nature-—
The second is the Vaccine, both ion.
mentunusand Newtonian, being, like
gravity, a simple agent of extraordina
ry influence. The third is the pre
sent, which inculcates the cure ofer-
!•.T*i awful diseases, by creating lac
litioua eruptions; a theory certainly
uf very ingenious suggestion, anil de
serving the most ample inquiry, as a
mode or practice auxiliary tu nature
under serious emergencies. Nature,
tt .is well known, throws out erup
tions in order to retnuve disease*
from vital porta tn those not vital-—
Blisters are used upon a similar prin
ciple ; but tarlariznl antimony, the
method prescribed by I) Jenner, ha"
-a mode of operation quite peculiar
and contnry to Ihe more simple cflec'
obtained from the applica ion of a
blister which only raises the cuticle,”
p. 28. " Bv the tartrite of antimony
(s-ys Dr, j. further) ive can not only
create vesicles, but vve can do more—
we have at our command an applica-
lion which will at the same time both
vesicate and produce diseased ac'ion
on the skin slself, by deeply derang
ing its structure beneath the surface.
Tnis is probably one cause why the
sympathetic affections exeited by the
use ut cairiharid'-s, and those changes
produced by tartar emeries, are very
different.” p, 29 Accordingly, an
ointment of larlariz- d antimony ha-
been applied in several cases of pati
ents lauuunngui.derd'ff'rcnt diseases,
particularly hose of consumption and
mania ; and, it ia slated, with .very
considerable suceesss. We are even
told ol srrnpliulous ulcers being cured
so effectual)}' (p. 56) as to proven'
amputation of an nrm ; and of a ynung
lady, in a dreadful s'ate of hysteria,
which had resisted rite most skilfu 1
treatment, being restored tn health
by the simple application of this paw
erfut agent.
A man by the name of John Thom
as, advertises in the Indiana Repulrli
can, in a very solemn manner, tlmi
lie has neither hatred nor ill will a
gainst any man living—but laments
that he is subject tu intoxication, and
solicits his friends In pray that he
may be delivered trom that evil, which
he says is entailed on him. . He in
quests the civd authority, or any of
his friends tn confine him in the jail,
whenever they find him drunk, until
he recovers the UBe of his rea«un.—
He concludes by recommending the
legislature to pass a general law to
that effect, as he think oilier* might
be becefltted by it. This request be.
ing reasonable, though somewhat sin-
gidar, we hope it mav be granted,

The attempts making, by the par
titans of Mi. Adams, tn implira'e ihe

not whether Gener-I Smyth is, or
is not, a commander of the fi-st or

may it does rot affect the votes, nr
slier Hie political principles, of Mr.
Adams. The title question is (lie fit.

cy. 'In solve this question, Mr.
Smyth s' a'e* certain facts, advances
certoin testimony, and leaves the pub
lie to determine. It is manifest tbs
General Siny'h has political courag \
sod it is clear from Ms style and tone

individuals, as well ae to'the public
for what he asserts.
