Mr* Harrison, the American Cqnsul
at that Island, lias since his residence
there, been the subject of repeated
insults, wantonly practised through
the instrumentality nf the Swedish
authorities. These indignities had
become so aggravated that for several
nights (he dwelling of Mr. H. was
assailed, with missiles, and that too
while.Mrs, II was seriousiy indispo

has been requested from the Governor,

Mr. Harrison, h is stated, is de-

understood that it proceeds trnm a
desire in the authorities of (he Island

Swedish government, as our informant
states, being averse to the liicatinnnf

of the Canal Fund of the State of N.

received and paid out for the execution
by the Canal Commissioners, from the
commencement of the business, 1817.
to the 31st December last, was g6
603.386, four and a quarter millions
of which were the fruits of loans, un
der the authority of the state. The
nett proceeds of tolls to be received
during the year 1823, is estimated a-
885,000—The amount which will be
required to finish these works, it is
said, will be about two and a half
millions ol dollars, -and costly as this
work will have been, it is supposed it
will, when completed yield a hand

interesting and wonderful old gentle
man in the south uf Scotland, were
interred in St. Michael’s church yard,
in presence, we believe, of a greater
crowd than ever entered or surround
ed the walls of the same place, since
the funeral nf Robert Burns. We
allude, ot course, to the interment
of Cnlonei'De Peystcr, who, ot the
time of his demise, was probably the
oldest Officer-in his Majesty’s service
As fitted the occasion, the gallant old
verteran was interred with military
honors—the Staff of the Dumfries
shire Militia attending, as well as a
numerous body nf the officers and men
of a retired volunteer corps (nf which
Burns was an original member,) who
one and all seemed anxious to pay
this mark of respect to the memory of
their reverend commander. Amongst
the other mourners appeared most of
our country gentlemen, and at their
head the Most Noble the Marquis of
Queensberry As the funeral passed
along, every window was filled with
spcoctatnra; and indeed among high
and low, we have never seen the sytii'-
pathy of the public more universally
excited. The deceased belonged to
the Church ofEogland, and. theser-
viqc was most beautifully r.nrl impres
sively read by the Rev. Mr. Buffing
ton. Dumfries Courier.
