" Perhaps no part of the country feels the
revival of tra<lo more than Connecticut. The
Collector of Ncw-Haven told me a f w days

doubled since the opening of the West India
ports. Many vessels employed in other trade
have been withdrawn and employed in con

We have a few facts to state below ns ev
idences of the flourishing state of commerce
and increasing prosperity of our city, and
we commend them particularly to the at
tention of those who pretend to disbelieve
that any real advantage has accrued to us
from the success of our negotiations respect
ing the West India ports.
The amount of duties on imports at this
port from the first of J muary to the 31st, in
clusive, was $ 1,486,000. From that date to
the 1st instant the amount is estimated to he
about six millions—making in four months
nearly seven and a half millions of dollars,nn
excess over the corresponding four months of
1 ist year of three and a half millions. The
number of foreign vessels which entered at
this port in the month of March, was 22; in
April, 41 ; and in May, to the present date,
20—showing a totul in a little more than two
months and a half of eighty-three vessels,
most of them from the West Indies.

We are told that ihe wife of the prophet

u Washington. 6th May, 1831.—Dear Sir
--I learn with some surprise from your enqui
ries, as well as those of others, that an im-
■prtssion has been made on the public mind to
n considerable extent, that the Cabinet was so
much embarrassed by the dissent ions of its
members as to render it menp-.We of trans
acting the public business. You may be as
sured, that there is not the slightest truth in
such a rumor. The official intercourse of the.
heads of Department with each other and with
the President has never, to my knowledge,
b -en interrupted for a moment, nor has any
difference of opinion as to the measures of
the government divided the Cabinet in a sin
gle instance, so far as I recollect, according
to the line of separation now so generally as
cribed in the public papers. I am, very re
spectfully, yours, S. D. INGHAM.”
Fuencii Neoooiatiuns.—The N. Intel
ligencer presumes that what has lately been
reported in this paper, about the opinions ex
pressed by the French Commissioners of the
conformity of the Berlin and Milan Decree
with the haws of Nutions.was “derived from
private letters from our Minister to France,
Mr. Rives.”—If the Intelligencer means to
say that these letters were addressed to any
one in Virginia, it is mistaken We presume
that it is also mistaken iu attiihuting the in
formation to Mr. Rives at all. Nor was it-
deriveil to us from Washington.—The Report,
came in a private letter from a gentleman in
a northern town to Ins Correspondent iu this
City. We have heard nothing since to con
tradict or to confirm the Report.

The project of establishing a line of ships
between this port, and a port in Great Bri
tain, as ulso of a line between this port and
Havre, having been recently under consider
ation among some of our m ist enterprizing
merchants, and enquiries having consequent
ly been unde, us to the facilities und expense
of building such vessels in the port of Char
leston, the model of a ship suitable for the
business, has been constructed by Messrs.
James Marsh &. Son, shiprights, for general
inspection, which is deposited for that pur
pose at the Nautical Store of Cnpt. James
Missroon, on East Bay. The model is con
sidered, by judges, to he very beautiful. It
is upon a ;} inch scale, of the following di
mensions, viz: 110 feet keel for tonnage, 32
feet beam moulded, 16 feet lower hold, 6 feet
lietween docks, 24 inches dead rise ut half
breadth of floor, length on deck 130 feet, 630
45-95 tons U. S. measurement, and 702 Car
penter*^ measurement.
The subject is one of sufficient interest, we
should hope, to attract the attention of all who
feel—a deep interest in resuscitating the lan
guishing art of ship building in the port of
Charleston.

horses entered for the purse, two mile heats,
viz :—Top Gallant, rode by Woodruff*; Hull

was withdrawn after the second heart, and

The Progress of Mormonism.—The
Painsville(Oliio) Gazette of Tuesday, records
another case of fatal infatuation, which has
occurred among the Mormonitcs located in
that vicinity. It will bo remembered, says
that print, that when these deluded creatures
first made their appearance here, they decla
red themselves immortal. Death, however,
has p id them no respect other than by fre
quent visits. In defiance of repented instan
ces of immortality, they still profess the pow
er of healing—refuse to call medical assis
tance, and many Fill the miserable victims of
their faith. The latest reports are that a few
days since the wife of a Mr. Murdock, daugh
ter of Tudge Clapp of Mentor, and a believer
in Mormonism, died among them in childbed,
for want of professional assistance. The wife
of the prophet Smith hardly escaped the same
fate: she was in labour three days, during
which time they tried their spells in vain, at
last they called an accoucheur, and she was
delivered of the dead bodies of two fine boys.
The mother barely survived.
The same paper states, that, within the past
week there had arrived at that place from
New-York, some by the lake and others by
land, at least two hundred Mormonites.—
They brought with them their household fur
niture entire, bag and baggage, and roots and

anti his wife PHILLIS. Harry is about for
ty years of age, is of good form and is about
six feet higli, the first joint of one of his
thumbs is stiff. Phillis is likely, of the mid
dle stature of woman, quite black and is about
forty years of age ; she has relations on the
plantation of Miss Campbell, near Savannah,
and acquaintances on the different plantations
near Savannah of Judge Jones. Harry's
mother is free and lives in Savannah in Yam-
craw, her name is Silvcy, and some years
since when Harry was from home, she har
boured him and he was taken out of her house.
Harry has a brother by the name of Isaac,
that works nt the coachraakors trade in Sa
vannah, who is very much like Harry. The
principal lurking places ofthese negroes, will
probably be made to the places I have named
and the plantations neur to those of the late
John Gibbons, about nine miles from Sa
vannah. For Harry I will give fifty dol
