C 10NCENTRATED Disinfecting Solti*
/ tion of Chloride of Soda, for preserving
meat, removing offensive smells, neutralizing
pestilential exhalations, and destroying con
tagion ' r
Prepared of uniform strength, by the New
England Chemical Company, ccordingto the
formulary promulgated by the philosophic
dVcoverer, A. G. Laiiaiiraqui:.
This article having been made use of, in nu
merous instances, by scientific persons of the

Chloride, may he relied on as proper and ben
eficial.
With a sprinkling of water mix^d with one \

stantly put down of the filthiest kennels, sew
ers, cess-pools, drains, water-closets,markets,
stalls for meut and IjnJi, slaughter-houses, and,
in general, all places infected with animal
exhalations.
For foul ulcers, a wine glass of Chloride
must ho mixed with us much as live times
thut quantity of pure water, anil pledgets of
lint must be dipped into this wash and then
laid over the ulcers. This dressing to be re
newed twice a day. If the sore Becomes red
mid angry the wash of live parts water must
ho still further diluted ; if, on llio contrary,
the sore docs not change its appearance, it
must he dn'ss"il onl!B of twice with Chloride
and watt r, half and half, so us to dispose to a
slight inflaimnution,which ts indispensable to
convert loud and running ulcers into simple
sores. The healing then progresses rapidly.
The moment the Chloride is applied upon an
ulcer the disagreeable smell is destroyed.

WM. Z. HALL.
I power. Dr. Tyson left sonic particulars of
one which was brought from Angola to this
country. In its passage to England it made
many friends on hoard ship, towards whom il
would manifest the strongest marks of ten
derness—sometimes embracing them. There
were some monkies of a lower species in tho
vessel, whom it seemed to liold in great aver
sion ; and it carefully avoided that nurt ef,
I the deck wbero tbey were confined. It soon
I became accustomed to the use of clothes, and
v.’us able partly to dress itself; but those ur-
forbear to n lax into a smile. The zealous
| preacher, indignant ut their levity, of which
j he knew not the cause, remonstrated with
them, and proceeded with a redoubled oner*

I.ICIlITMNO CONDUCTO 8 FOR SHU'S.
Several years have claps* d sine an ingo'*
iiioiis Surgeon of Flyinoulh, England, Mr.
William iviow Harris, published a work en
titled—“Observations on the effect ofLight-
ning on Jloahngbodies, with an account of
a new method of ajiplying fixed und
continuous conductors of electricity to
the. mast of ships," und although vessel
after vessel, Since that time (1823), has
been struck and severely injured, it is only
recent that the Lords of the Admiralty
have authorized the introduction of Mr.
Harris’s method into ships of war.
This is not for want of being fully aware of
all tli" experiments instituted l*y that gon-
ileiu in. for Ins “ohsenyitions” were address
ed to the Comp'roller of ms Majesty’s Navy;
and lint the 'subject was well known to emi
nent naval officers is evinced by the follow-
1 i ing Extract from the Duke of Saxe Weimar’s
* Log Book” of his "Travels throug li North
America.
"Sir John Fliilftpmore accomnamed me to
see Mr. II.rris, a Surgeon, who has invented
a new lightningcoi.doctor for ahi.-s. Ilehus,
for the Mike of experiment, had tho model of
a frigate built, which lie flouts in a tub of wa
ter. There is a conductor to each must, from
which copper rods, secured to each other, run
down the mast to the keel, through which
they pass into the water. Mr Harris as
serts thut tfin lightning passes down these
rods witho|Aufleeting nny thing iu tho vicin tv.
To prove this ho would around the mast a pa
per filled with gunnowder, through which the
lighlnmgwns sent without exploding it. To
prove farther that the electricity can produce
‘ | comb.iftion after passing through water, ho
conuocted the conductor below the kcdl, by a
copper wire, with the touch-halo of a small
canno'i, which was floated in the tub: when
tho electri*!t) strikes tho conductor on
the mast, the emuor. is instantaneously
fired.”
The neglect of Mr. Harris's suggestions ■
arose from the difficulty of penetrating tho
louden harrier of prejudice and ignorance thut
surrounds the herds oftlio Admiralty, and
has too often checked tho rise of modi st
merit and occasion the rejection of weighty
improvements. That such was the case in
this instance, is sufficieutjy exhibited by the
fact, tlmt two officers—high in the depart,
til ill, urged as invincible objections to tho
plan of Mr. Harris—that if two ships wero
sailing in company, and one of thorn sfmuid
lie struck, by the aid of Mr. Harris’s conduc-
tors the lightning would be certain to puss
through the sou nnd strike the other!
'J’lie numerous accident* to ships, from
lightning, have long attracted attention, and
various plans have been rercommcnih'd for
their prevention. The continuous nnd ftyed
metallic rods of Franklin have been eftn-
sidered inapplicable, in consequence oftlio
mast bemg subjected to* motion in various
ways ;—to elongation, contraction, &c.—
Long flexible chains or links of copper have,
therefore, been suggested, but they lire by no
moans efficient substitutes for the others:
being liable to be disunited or carelessly np-
plied ; and as they are only temporarily attach
ed, tliej may l#e ftirgotton during a storm,
which appears suddenly, until mischief has
been sustained.
Mr. Hurris’sendeavore w -re'directedto the
application of 6iicli a conductor as may be *
"continuous and direct from the vane
spindle ut the mast bend to tiio sea ;
may be permanently fixed throughout its
wholeexient yet admit of the motion of
one portion of the mast upon another ; shall
iu no way interfere with the standing or run
ning rjgging; and in c se of thcTcmoval
of any part of the must, either by accident or
design tho continuity of the remaining part
shall be perfect, determine the course of the
discharge, and transmit it securely into the
sea.”
All these advantages he found to result
from the use oftwo layers of siieet copper,
each one eighth of an inch thick, or even less,
cut into slips of a convenient length and
breadth, inserted into a groove ploughed hor
izontally in the aft part of tho masts, and so
