fortunate manner of developing and demon.'
strati ng thorn. We lived together, or, if I
would use the correct expression, I should
say, we fought together, for nearly ten yenrs,
during all of which time, I verily believe,
that upon no one point, circumstance or
opinion did we ever co-incide; the only thing
we agreed upon was to disagree, and even
then wo quarrelled ns to the mnnner of our
disagreement. The labours of Hercules and
Stsiphus, were nothing to what 1 had to per
form. Tho one had only to cleanse a stable,
(altlio* to be sure, it was an Augean one,)
and the other bad only to roll n heavy .stone,
(which certainly “ gathered no moss,”) but
wliat was the cleansing of a stable, or the
moving of a stone compared to what I bad to
do. I had to combat with a Woman. This
is saying mult urn in parvo, or compressing
ton years of misery, despair and anguish,
within the compass of a single word.
I wonder who first invented matrimony!
If ho lived in a civilized country, ho certainly
would have been entitled to a patent right,
ns the discoverer of a new instrument of tor
ture. There was that scoundrel Mahommcd,
who permitted, and oven enjoined upon Ins
disciples, to have a plurality of wives, as if
one were not sufficient to recall perpetually
to a man’s recollection, the misery of human
existence. To do the poor fellow justice, how
ever, he did give tho hiiRbaud the power of
putting tho wife to death, upon certain occa
sions, which goes very far in my opinion, to
the ex'enuntion of his crime. If I had lived
in a Mahomedsn country, I would have avail
ed myself of one of its privileges, nllho’ 1
conceive it unnecessary to mention, which.
At Inst, tho' main spring of inv misery
broke, Death again entered my habitation,
but this time he came as a minister of joy,
Hot. of woe : when lie came before, he enter
ed like a thief in the night, to rob me of my
happiness, but now, he walked in, in the open
noon day, and I did not protend to hinder
him, as ho only wanted my wife. If he
thought ho hnd taken away u treasure, what
a mistake lie made. Again, the fount >in of
my tears, was opened, and they gushed forth
in a “briny flood,” but they were tears of
pure and unadulterated pleasure. An incubus I
was removed from my heart and happiness,
which hnd weighed upon them, for what
seemed to me, a century of existence; and I
fell.ftSl suppose, Sinbun must naturally Imve
do4ne, when he shook off the “ Old man of tin*
Sou,” who had placed himself upon his shoul
ders, and got rid of a troublesome companion,
by knocking him in the bi nd.
Through all my after years|of madness, s»u
pidity and folly, I always returned reuson
enough, not to marry again.

03“ Another week of continued rains.—
We apprehend great destruction to the crop.
The boles are rotting upon the Cotton, and
the Rust in many places is spreading its mis
chievous blight. Very little thunder and light-
ninghavc occurred this summer, yesterday
however during a heavy Bhowor there were
several startling explosions ; tho lightning
was seen to strike the conductor on the Ex
change and the electric fluid to descend in a
large body, it struck also one of Mr. Wil
liamson's stor6s, tearing of some Of the
slate, but doing no other injury.
There has been but one death this week,
and the hcalthfulness of the city continues
to bn uninterrupted.

Dr. Chapman's Anti-Dispcptic
or Sour Stomach I*ills,
H AVE stood the test of experience, and
are. found to he an infallible cure for In
digestion. These pills have been highly ap
proved by those who Imve used them for tiie
above disease,—They act as a powerful to
nic. neutra'izing the acid upon the stomach
—giving strength to the debilitated organs of
digestion—restore the appetite -and remove
nausae and sickness at the stomach, habitual
costivenoss, head-ache, despondency of the
mind, paleness of the countenance, palpeta-
tion of the heart vertego or giddiness, belching
up of water which is sometimes tustels-s hut
most commonly sour, and many other nervous
affections. They do not contain mercury in
any form, nor do they sicken the stomach ns
most purgative medicines do, but perform the
office of a safe and mild cathartic. There is
no restriction in diet or drink, or exposure to
wet or cold, while using them. They are
therefore particularly calculated for family
use. The proprietor of these pills was one
of the most eminent practitioners of medicine
iu the United States, and used them success
fully in his practice for many years.
