Botanical Prospectus.
I). 0- C. I. AND RETII,
SUH.FRY AND RUUD8MFR OF TIIIR CITY.
D ESIGN to issue early in the enduing au-
t-mn, the first number of a periodical
work on Ornamental Plants. Of all branch
es of Nntnrul Science, Botany has ever had
the greatest number of ndmirers ; it bus been
the study of the learned in all ages and in nil
countries ; it charms alike the aged un i the
yoflthful.und nhvuys presents on uither hand,
something new' and interesting ; whether
wandering on the mountain top, or traversing
the morass, a knowledge of the structure and
classification of plants affords the means of
jibundant interest und employment. Unlike
t he study of some departments of Natural
History,.no investigations are to he made but
such ns uro agreeable, and in the language of
the late president of the Linnaean Society,
•“ ol! is elegance and delight; its pleasures
spring up under our feet, and us we pursue
them rewards us with health und serene sa
tisfaction.”
The proposed work will he modelled some
what ailer the Botanical Magazine of Curtis
(England); to Floriculture and the delineation
of plants it will be mainly directed—yet it wi‘
afford opportunity for occasional remarks on
the elementary and physiological parts of Bo
tany. Jt will be issued monthly in a quarto
form, each number embellished with at least
four elegant 1 y eiccuted lithographic draw
ings, colored true to nature, by an artist of
h.gii respeetubility.
The plants to ho delineated, (ns well nn-
tive ns exotic,) will he se eded with reference
to their beauty, eusu of cultivation, and other
desirable qualities, and embrace those of the
hot-honse, green-house, ami open air. Each
figure will bo accompanied with au accurate
botanical description ; its natural fnmily and
Linnenn class and order ; its history ; its
use, it any, in medicine and the arts, and oth
er remarks likely to prove interesting ; to
gether with minute practical instructions for
its propagation, soil, culture, and preserva
tion.
Unceasing are the requests made the adver
tisers for instruction as to the culture and
general treatment of plants : also, for des
criptions of such new ones as their catalogue
annually announces. It*is believed the work
will not only meet the wishes thus expressed
by their numerous patrons, hut prove useful in
nourishing a tuote forTlortn ulture.
They ure not stimulated to the underta
king solely by the prospect of pecuniary gain.
'*4Phcir collections of plants present facilities
for contributing, through this medium, to the
rational and intellectual enjoyments of their
fellow-citizens : it is therefore intended to is
sue the publication on the lowest terms possi
ble. The price however must depend in a
degree on the patronage extended, though
under no circumstances will it exceed eight
dollars per annum. '
0^*Due notice of its publication will bo gi
ven. Philadelphia, August IB, 1831.
