TV |i!e of Texas have resolved to
gi- >, eating prairie chicken - for awhile,
nit because they do not love them, hut
out of respect, deference ami fe ir of the
grasshoppers. There are killed -■ , r ear
arid shipped to the Knstern market from
the country west of the Mississippi one
thousand tons of these prairie chick an ,
equal to live hundred thousand birds.
These birds arc the natural enemies nftlie
hoppers, and feed altno-t wholly on them.
In former days when the prairies were
covered with prniiie chickens the gra.-
hoppers gave no trouble at all, as tin
were all eaten before they could do any
damage.

Reply to ‘Raven.’
To tKa Editor of the Gazette:
Tho indignation of the members ol
Gwaltncy lodge Was not sn highly aivn id
i* yourcorrespomleiit “Raven” imagines;
hough wc wore not slow to parry a tin ml
rom the rancorous pen o( ‘King Alenhol.
' Raven draws a very gloomy picture o,
(lie future prospects ol the Independent
Order of Good Tetuplars in *'h a l1 > ,
county, llis ideas coinciding with tlm
of "King Alcohol," he predicts the early
downfall of the various lodges in tin
county, and l infer from his langmun
that he almost hears the harping of then
funeral dirge.
He says: “Although not a Good Tom
plar myself, 1 have never used intoxiea
ting drinks in my lito; and I tvi li the
Good Templars God speed in their sacred
cause; but unless they arouse them-, Ive I
from their lethargy, tins organi/.alnei j
will soon be ono of the things of the pa-t.
Now allow me to drfidc tho position r
“Raven " lie is strictly temper, no. an
a passive agent standing supinely with
folded arms on neutral ground, and sayi ll
through a public journal, “1 wish th
Good Templars God speed in their sacred
cause.” If so, Mr. “Raven,’’ prove
yourself to he worthy of your language by
becoming an active participant “in the
sacred cause," rather than remain a
passive agent on neutral ground. Keep
your light no longer hid under the bushel,
with your own mantle drawn so closely
around you, hut let it hose reflected that
others may see your good works, and be
constrained to go with you, and thus you
may gather iu many wanderers from this
desert moral waste, and link after link
will continue to he added to (lie golden
chain which you have begun to weave.
Has “Raven” not seen his neighbors,
friendsae I perhaps relatives writhing and
aiiik 1 ' g down under the influence of this
demoralising vice of whiskey drinking,
which blights the verdant glow of youth,
strip > manhood of its glory, and old age
of its crown? Then why stand so supinely
indifleront with folded arms, and say by
your actions, so long as my own house is
not involved, I will not become an active
participant in the “sacred cause” of
Temperance? You look on with indif
ference and see the ruiu-fiend assault and
capture your neighbor’s house, hut it is
none of your business to interfere. So
revelry goes on, while wives are worse
than widowed, and children are beggared
Then Mr. “Raven,” your supineness
becomes sinful. You outrage every
generous instinct of your nature when
you encourage even by indifference the
liquor traffic.
Again; “Raven” says, “If the Good
Templars are simply keeping themselves
unspotted from the world, and drawing
their own mantles proudly about them
saying that, ‘ I aui a member of the 1.0
ti.’ T. they arc no better than if th< y did
not belong to the order.”
Our cause is not a -cifisli „ne. Our
members will give the hand <>t K-dowship
to all those who will come under the ban
ner of Faith, Hope and Charity. We
hold out the olive branch of peace to tin
inebriate; we offer an asylum, a place of
