M”Abner Eoluils has twenty two bee- j
and out of them he lias taken six
huni’yctl pounds of honey this year, and ■
has some more to take yet. Now ti e i
subject of enquiry is, whie.lt is best to eat, ;
’cotton or hone, ? Now, if Mr. Echols i
will put guano under his gums next year, :
he might make t welve hundred poun Is of
honey, and then again fie might not.
There is no telling.
Hayes.
Hayes ail 1 his Cabinet are trying very
hard to get up a war with poor old Mex
ico Tli ;y want to get some more teiri
tory to make carpet-hag Status out ot.
They feel that this i. their only chance to
maintain ascendency in the 1 nited States
Senate, and then they want a war to give
j ample something else to think about ex
cept themselves. Hlatnfi and lit, taction
arc aha ins Hayes, and say that this is a
Southern move. Hut Hlaitie is suuply
lyin ’ like a dog. lie knows that the
Southern people want no more carpet
lug Soi.at rs, and lie is only acting his
part.

believe lie is right on the greenback
question, but we think that if lie will only
tight on for the Democracy, and let side
issues a! jue until the people can get the
thieves out and honest men in, then he
will have done something that the people
of the whole country would thank him
for. Brick i one of the mo t ta’ented
men i ; the Nation, and the lost we read
after, except Charles A. Dana. But we
are afraid lie i.- a . ore-head. \\ c honor
and respect him far his independence,
and for his manly tea 'liitig of the masses
of the people. Wc love and respect him
f'er his beautiful thoughts in his Saturday
night chapters. We love some oi hi>
Democracy, bu‘ we can’t go all of it. We
can't forget how har i he wrote against
Til den as the nominee of the Democracy;
but we agree with his estimate of the
man. We should just like to know what
Andrew Jackson w ml 1 have said if a
parcel of deadbeats had undertaken to
count him out?
Geologizing-
Mr. A. 11. MeCu.ehen, assistant b’tuft
geologist, and our humble self went out
last week to look at the crust of old
Mother Earth, and we were too busy to
write further than to make mtes.
We spent the first day in examining the
sub carboniferous strata in West Ar
mucliee, and on the following day wo
visited Sand mountain in Chattooga.
This mountain extends from Subligua to
Echols’ lulll about ten miles. It btjuni’s
to the carboniferous period and contains
coal; ltow much it is hard to determine.
The seam i.- thin at the out-crop, but
im,y be thicker as it extends into the
mountain. This can only be determined
by sinking shafts, or boring with the
diamond drill.
There is no doubt of the coal being
there and very little doubt of this moun
tain being the last place in an ca tern
direction where coal will ever be found in
the Slate. Mr. MuJu.cben thinks that
there is every reason to believe that
petroleum will be found by boring a lew
hundred fee! in West Arwuehoc and
Texas valiie-j.
We traveled around extensively until
Saturday, when wc visited the Jackson
cave near Subiigna. Quite a party of
gentlemen assisted in this interesting ex
ploration. Wc went in at 10 o’clock and
come out at one. We ni ,de no measure
ment', Lu 1 suppose that wc traveled
aii, ; three miles, It is an interesting
cave. Bit there are drawbacks to visiting
it. It is bard to get in and out of, and is
very dirty and muddy after rains, as
water runs in extensively through a sink
hole.
There are some beautiful rooms and
long arched passages. There are a num
ber , if stalagmite and stalactites, a few of :
which are joined together making bcauti-j
ful columns extending from floor to eeii- 1
ing. We regret to see a disposition to
break up those beautiful creatures. If a
man would or could only think how many
hundred years it takes to make one ol
these beautiful columns, ha would ccr- 1
tainly hesitate before destroying in a
moment a thing so beautiful, and die j
work oi patient Nature through so many
centuries. We read that, in Sweden,
scientific rnen have been noting the growth
ofa stalagmite in a cave for one hundred
years. Measurement.-: hate been taken
i from time to time, and they estimate |
| that it would take about tineo hundred j
and fifty thousand years to form one of
| the smallest ones in the cave where they [
i are experimenting.
We found a huge curiosity on Sand
mountain in the sliai o of a gulf with
some overhanging rocks of gigantic pro
portions, over which the water poured in
a fall of forty feet. We got under it, and 1
Lad the greatest shower-bath wo have
had in twenty years. Messrs. Perry and
! Murdock have u tine saw mill on the crest
of the mountain, turned l>y an overshot,
wheel which is entirely concealed from
! view by a bluff of rock- The only trouble
! is, there is not enough water in the sum- ]
mer time.
We have to return thanks to a number I
of gentlemen and ladies who extended
I hospitalities to ns and gave useful and j
interesting information. Among others
j we mention ibe names of Mr. and .Mr . j
White and Dr. Clements at Subiigna,
Mr. and Mrs Wright and Mr. and Mrs.
Echols of Dit'liown Mr. and Mrs. Bag
well of Haywood, and Dr. Scluiau of
Texas val.tsy.
Wo gathered a buggy load of sped
limns-—s' ells, minerals, rock etc , some
of which will be forwarded to the geologi
cal department in Atlanta.
Although we had a pleasant arid proiit
| able trip, and want to go again sometime
j soon, wo regret that we did not get tlie
j eitanee to say a Wo.d to the leaders of the
G.’/tSITK hi. t week, but be couldn’t.

Cotton.
Mi. lj. (iritlin, of Aliappaiia, fin., lias
acquired more notoriety in a lew days
than any man we ever knew. He aAs
the folio vitig question: “If A soils Ba
bale of cotton for fifty dollars, and buys it !
back for forty five, and then sells it again
for sixty-five, what does ho make on it?’
We saw a column of answer.- in the Sun '
a few days ago, and nil of them were
different. We will now proceed to show
just what Mr. A, or as wo it el to call
him, Mr. Richard Rowe did make on that
halo of cotton.
Mr. Rowe had a farm of on: hundred
acres of land, on which he pays a tax of
five dollar end sixty cents. He took
Cuffee in to make a crop. Cutler had a
wife and six small children and one at the
breast. Cuffee planted S aeies m corn
and five, in cotton. He run round the
corn in May and broke out the balks in
July. When ho laid it by it was just 4
foot high with a yellow stalk as hard as a'
lightwood limb, tied was thick enough in
the row for cotton. On the ISih day of
August, Cuffee attended a big meeting
and offered up a few prayers in an ex
ei-adingly loud voice as though the land
had an impediment in his oar. Cuffee
did not get. home that night or for several
nights afterward?.
A vain and wind eauie on, a tree fell
on the lence and Mr Jones’ cows got in
and cut up the lust nubbin. Air. Rowe
bought n -j ton of frankinseence, some
tim s called guano, for which lie paid
thirty doilaip, hauled it twenty Jtuiies,
worth throe dollars: sold Cuffee thirty
bushels of corn at 7.0 cents, 200 pounds o'
bacon at 15 cents, tobacco ?0.35, went
security at the store for Cuffee to get
goods to amount of S2O H 7; (luffee burnt
up 2o panels of fence worth two dollars;
broke one east plow worth $5.25; throe
trace chains $175; one pair ! nines 75
cents; ruined one I jatlier collar by leaving
it in tlie rain $2.25; stole one plow made ]
■ of steel and sold it for tobacco $1.50; lost
j two hoes $2; stoic one yearling calf $ 1.50: i
two hogs $8.75; two turkeys two doll: rs; |
'li dozen eggs $1,10; 4 cars of corn out of j
| the mules [tough at each feed for six i
| months, making bs hu-hols, worth sixty j
| emits per bu-liei; left Air. Ib '.ve’s gates j
j open and let in stock that destroyed for j
; Mr. Bowe, at least thirteen dollar., worth j
of proeuce in tlie course of tlie year. He
I stole Mr. Rowe’s axe from the woodpile, |
i and sold it fora pint, of whiskey damaging !
j Rowe $1.25, injured a good mule atleast !
$35, and made one ! ale of cotton on five j
acres of good land, which Mr. I’owe got j
seventy dollars for by good trading. Now j
subtract seventy dollars from the cost of j
the hale which was two hundred and j
sixteen dollars and twenty-two cents, and ;
| you have the net amount that Mr. Rowe j
made on that little hale. Now count that. !
I all up and see it tli.t is not just about |
J .viiat is tlie matter with Hannah.
11. A. Smith, Bookseller and Music!

I new books, stationery and new music; also I
| a splendid stock of wall paper and paper j
window sliades'at reduced prices. Com- ;
plete sets of croquet, in wood boxes, for |
$1.50 per set, about half the former |
! prices- A special bargain now being of- i
j fered in new and second-hand pianos; i
second-hand pianos, SIOO to $125; about j
1 one-third the original cost. Have anew
