Cultivators arc finding out, all over tin
country, that the most rapid way to kill
weeds is not to let them grow. Break
the white and brittle sprouts from the
seeds before they are. fairly above ground.
The oftener you do it, th ■ better for the
crop. It is ever so much easier and bet
ter than pulling tip big wc Is by band,
or cutting them off with a lme. In the
garden, the must expeditious way is to
turn over the mellow ground with a si eel
rake, which going down an inch snaps the
sprouts of every weed. If the ground P
lull'd, skim the surface with a light, tliiu
hoe, ground sharp, and then use the
rake. In the field, the farmer must use
the harrow or cultivator of.cn enough to
keep a perfectly clean utrfnee all the
tone. Such good treatment will often
double the grow th of the crop by the con
stant stirring of the soil, independently of
keeping the weeds from sucking their
noui isbment.
Says a writer ia Hallo Journal of
Health: A larger portion of farmers fill
our mad bouses than any other one class
of pi l'sons in the lan 1. We have before
slated the reason of thi- tola the monoto
ny of (heir employment and want of
mental stimulus. But this slate of things
is rapidly changing, by the influence of
agricultural journals which are establish
ing themselves in every section of the
country. Their tendencies are of a
healthful character in many ways. By
tolling the reason of things they open up
anew world of thought to the cultivator
of the soil, which is pursued under the
inflil-'iiec of a stin ulus the mo I p tent in
all lands, that of profit. Just give the
most ordinary farmer an inkling of how
he may make an acre produ-’o as much as
an acre at and a hall dtd before, and ho will
dive into the subject with an avidity ipute
surprising. Then there is the ple.isu c i
intelligent cultivat-on, which is not in
ferior in its effect on the whole man, to
the satisfaction of increased profit, while
it is far purer and more eh voting.
