Dried Fruit.
People are so everlastingly wrapped up
in making cotton to get out of debt, and
to steer clear of breakers ahead, that
it blinds them to the fact that lhe>
are plunging deeper an 1 yet and eper into
the abyss they would shun. In their
fanaticism after cotton, the snia.ler p.o
ductions are overlooked, in which there
is more money with less labor, than in ;
cotton.
In a cursory glance in just one of our
exchanges, we find tiro following facts
stated: That 125,000 worth of dried
fruit is a low estimate that has 1 ecu sol
in Forsyth during thesummei. la Gridin
$1,200 is paid out every day for this nr
tide. During the past month eighty live
thousand pounds have b ei. sold i:t < lg o
thorpe at. Wight cents per pound; and th -
value of this crop in Georgia tlm pres m
year is supposed to bo at least >1,5.(0, is..
The Central Georgia lUr/,7/ av
“About fifteen thousand pound id
dried fruit wero sold iu Barae v.llj on
Suiur.lay last. It is estimated by some
that as tunny, if net more, pouns wen
the day before. A /duilon man was in
town hist, week, and remarked that the
would bonne hundred thousand dolhis
worth of fruit shipped from l ike county
this ea. ou. Thu remark is not wide
from the truth. It is no exaegeralion to
say that there will be one hundred thou
sarnl pounds brought to town during thi
week- The facilities for drying ac ex
eellont, and the people are fairly ut work.
The quality of tho fruit is usually good
and bring from six to nine cents iu
trade,”
Wo propound the simple question to
every fiuimer: What crop on all the
hiltm id raised with less expense and labor
t*afU’les and puaelies? and is there a
i that will pay any better? Why not
then turn more attention to this crop?
We are gratified to sc ! that some at
tention is being turned in this direction,
and trust in the future it will receive
that regard it so justly merits. When
this is the ease, the tide of eoono y will
rise, and should the meat, and bread crop
fail, “dried apples for break ast, hot
water fu'dinner, and let ’em swell up for
supper,” will be the watchword.
Rust in Tin—To prevent rusting of
tin, rub fresh lard over every part of the
dish, and then put it in a hot oven and
heat it thoroughly, Thus treated any
tinware may be used in water constantly
and remain bright and free from rust in
definitely.
It seems there has been a terrible crop
tion in the volcano Cotopaxi. A thou
sand human beings and two thousand
cattle were destroyed, Ashes then the
eruption have been falling 1,000 miles
away.
The forests of North Carolina produce
twenty two species of oak, eight o pine,
nine of spruce, set on of magnolia, eight
of hickory, and five each of elm and
birch.
