BE AGREEABLE AT MEALS.
Every one can do something to add to
the social lift at the table. If mo oann ic
talk, he can listen, or ask quo, lions, an 1
draw out others who can talk. Good
listeners are as necessary as good talkers.
Never argue at the table; but. tell plea-agt
stories, relate or read anecdotes, and look
out fur the good of all. Sometimes a
single anecdote from a paper starts *c in
versation that lasts during the meal time.
A family table ought to be blight and
cheerful, a sort.of domestic altar, where
every one casts down his or her offering,
great or small, of pleasantness and peace;
where, for at least a space in the day all
annoyunccs arc laid aside, all s-ormy
tempers hushed, all quarrels healed;
every one being glad and content to sit
down at the same hoard and oat the same
bread and salt, making it, whether it
were a rich repast ur a dinner of herbs,
equally joyful, an almost sacramental meal

No sooner docs lh stranger set foot in
Brittany than he is reminded that it is the
the most Catholic part of France. As you
speed along by railway from HU Main to
Nantes, you are startled by the occasional
glimpse of a Calvaire, in stone or wood, as
the case may be, placed conspicuously by
the wayside. Those gaunt life-size figures
of the crucified Christ, sometimes rude and
grotesque, at others possessing some claims
to artistic design, have a pathos of their
own thus place 1. The third-class passen
gers, consisting chiefly of market women
in the various coiffures of their district,
priests, and soldiers, cross themselves at
the sight, and gaze upon the figures rever
ently. There can be no doubt that for the
country folks such symbols do mean some
thing, and that, mingled with much super
stition, Brittany is still pre-eminently ths
land of fai .h and piety.

. “TOO LATE.”
A year or two ago a lady entered the
office of a skillful physician.
“Doctor, T have come to you to sec if
you can cure me.”
The ease was examined with cure, and
then the Doctor said, “Madam, I regret
to tell you, in all candor, you are
my reach. I can do nothing for you, ex
cept to suggest some treatment that may :
for the time relievo your pain. The dis- 1
ease is too far advanced to be cured by
me, or by any one.”
“Could you have helped me a month
ago?”
“I think not.” '
“Could you three months ago?’’
“Perhaps so. ’’
“Could you six months ag ■?”
“Yes madam, there is no and übt, had
yon come to uic six mouths ago I could
liavo cured you. ”
The poor woman started from horrent,
and with a wild look uud a piercing tone
I said, “O Doctor, 1 knew of this a year
ago, and then my husband and children
i urged mo to visit you. 1 live only one
hundred miles away, an 1 in six hours'
time could have reached you. But I Was
busy with my housework, and it seemed
hard for me to have home. So I put it
off, in hopes the disc so wuu’d get betro;
iof itself. And new can it he, Doctor, yo i
i say it is too late?”
Th physician looked sad, but repeated
the words, “Too Late!” and the disap
pointed woman left his olli re to go home
and die, another victim of procrastina
tion.

AN EXTENSIVE HOOK.
A great literary curiosity is now for sal#
at Peking. It consists ol a copy of a gigan
tic work, composed of 0,101) volumes, en
title-r**' An Imperial Collection of Ancient
ami Modern Literature.” This huge eney
cl jstilia was commenced during the reign
(of the Emperor Kanghe (lfifi'J 172'.’), mid
was printed at the Impel ini Printing Office,
where a complete lout of copper type was
cast for the purpose. Its contents are ar
ranged upder thirty-two divisions, and em
brace every subject dealt within the range of
Chinese literature. Unfortunately the
greater part of the type employed in pVint
ing the work was, after the publication of
the first edition, purloined by dishonest
officials, and the remaining portion was
melted down to lie coined into cash. The
result is that very few- copies are now in ex
istence, mid still fewer ever come into the
market. The price asked for the present
copy by the Chinese owner is, we believe,
about £4,000. •

The Nantucket Review says that the

mackerel suddenly turned, amt, making for
the seine took it down. A vessel in the
neighborho >d immediately answered a call
for assistance, and swept her seine under
that of the Oliver Cromwell s. Twenty
three hundred dollars' worth of mackerel
was secured, the two vessels dividing the
catch, the fish selling at an average ol nine
cents each. The bunt of the seine belonging
to the Oliver Cromwell was badly rent by t he
sudden rush of fish,or more would have been
•secured. This is the second time the seme
of the Oliver Cromwell has experienced
similar treatment, losing all the fish at the
first, on account of the seine giving way,
and there being no help near.
