Our object on t! in occasion is t
cold*rate utid to honor, not only the
founders of the colony, hut the principle-*
upon which our institutions were based.
When l'micles delivered his grat.d
historic funeral oration over the
Athenian* who had fallen in the fiis*
year of iW Pdopon .ca un war, ho dwe’t
mainly upon the institutions of Athens,
civil and military, for the maintenance of
which three patriots had offered up their
lives upon the altar of their country, and
to show to - their Hjrvivois and to the
world that the outlso in whi di they hud
fillcn vvas worthy of the mcrifioes made
Wo ini rht on this occasion compare
the institutions which our forefathers
framed and rented with those of Athens,
with a perfect confidence that in all that
ennobles mankind and secures the highest
order of* civilization ours would suffer
nothing by tho eotnpnrbon. Time docs
not allow, even il mysttongth permitted
me to indulge in thin comparison. Suffice
it to say that we do honor to ourselves in
honoring the meuioricp of our forefathers.
Well may Massachusetts honor the name
of Winthrop—New Hampshire her
Mason and Gorges—(’mmoctiont hot
Davenport— Maryland her Lord Haiti
more, her founder and the pioneer ol
religious freedom —Rhode Island her
Roger Williams, who planted hi* little
colony upon principles of soul liberty in
matter o< worship—Pennsylvania her
renowned founder William Penn—
Virginia her Martin Frobisher and her
romantic .lames Smith -North Carolina
her Raleigh, whose name will go down
to poster ty with impel is' able fame.
But we of Georgia, witkmn disparage
ment to the founders of other colonics of
the Union, claim that none stand higher
deservedly in the roll of sublunary
immortality than those who planned,
founded, nurtured and reared ’he colony
of Georgia, the youngest of thesisk r
hod; tho leader and projector of which
was James Oylcthnr;o. Cicero said,
“Noqtic cnim out til'ii res, in qua propius
ad iVorun: tinmen vit tusnccedat humana,
quum civitaies aui oondere novas aut
oou*ervaro jam oonditas''—“For there is
nothing in human virtue which more
nearly approaches divine power than in
luumling m w States, anJ iu p eseiving
those already founded.” This is true of
Mo.*es of Solon, of Lyourgus, in ancient
> ays, us well as Baltimore, Roger
Williams. Ueun, and our own Oglethorpe.
Without any disparagement to other
founders ot colonies on this continent, we
tua> justly claim that Oglethorpe, in all
that constitutes the great warrior, civilian
and statesman, stands head and shoulders
, above them all. Hiscdony whs founded
I upon principle- very different from those
I founded by others.
In speuking of the colony formed by
Oglethorpe, il has been well said by
Bishop Stevens, one of Georgia's ablest
historians, that “it was the first colony
1 over founded by charity.’* New England
had been sealed by puritans, who fled
thither for conscience’ sake; New York
by a company of merchants ami ad
venturers, in search of gain; Maryland by
Papists ruliring from Protestant in
oierauoe; Virginia by ambitious cavaliers;
(\t.o ina by tho scheming and visionary
Shaftsbury and others, for private aims
and individual aggrandizement, hut
Georgia was planted by the hand of
benevolence, and reared into being by
the adventurous nurturing ofdisinte ostod
olinrily."
This in strictly true. The founding of
Georgia was prompted mainly by be
nevolei co and humanity, and the prin
ciples on which it was founded have tin
pnrallel in the history of the world.
Governor Stephens then quoted from
the charter nf Georgia, showing that one
great objicl in founding the colony was
to provide a home for those who could
not earn a liri- g in England; that no one
of the corporators was allowed to receive
any nay. nr to he pecuniarily interested
in disposing of the land; and that it wasn
first principle to dispose of the Innd only
in small bodies, so that, poor men, ncfna|
settlers, could lie benefited. He paid a
glowing trihnte to J attics Oglet.l orp*.
whom he declared to tie next to George
Washington in real greatness.
