TELL YOUR WIFE.
Man, if you have a secret, tell your
wife. If you uru troubled in mind, tell
your wife. Keep nothing from her. If
anything perplexes you, tell her at once.
“Ten to one her invention will solve the
difficulty.” "The wit of woman has been
praised, but her instincts are quicker and
keener than her reason." Counsel with
your wife, and light will flash in upon
your pathway. Many a home, has been
saved froui ruin by man’s confidence in
his “better half." The mun who intends
to succeed—to make life a success—
should not fail to make his wife his
oonfidant in everything—he should mako
her his partner in all his hopes and
purposes. "A woman’s advice isgenerally

* OLD PEOPLE.
I wonder why we have no more lespect
for the old than we have. "I wonder
why we are not always tender and
thoughtful of the old. 1 wonder why
people forget so, and seem to think that
the romance and the dreaui days all
belong to the young, none seeming to
have a thought for ihe stories written on
hearts that are hidden by wrinkled, earu
worn faces; never seeming to think of the
pathos of lives growu silent and tired of
the long journey; never thinking of the
struggles, the noble deeds, which are
wriiten in the old laces, looking from dim
eyes, sounding iu ices from which the
music has gone, in steps grown slow and
halting, hands trembling and strtngthless.
Oh, I wonder we forget all ties. I
wonder we are not always lender of the
old."
FAULTS.
Wonder why we can see so aiany faults
in others and never see any in ourselves.
1 wonder why we magnify the failings ol
others to such a great extent. I wonder
wny we ure forever speaking slightly of
our neighbor and our neighbor of us.
Such is human nature l suppose.
MISERABLE PEOPLE.
A good tonic lor disoouraged people is,
“to think about yourself, how much you
have lost, how much you havo made, und
the poor prospects for the lulure. A
brave man with a soul iu him gets out of
such pitiful ruts and laughs at discourage
ments, rolls up his sleeves, whistles and
sings, and makes the best of life. The
earth was never intended for a paradi e,
and a man who rises above his dis

will only be the stronger and better for

THE BRIGHT SIDE
Despondent heart, look to the bright
side. The times may he hard, hut volt
can make them no lighter by wearing a
sad countenance. The sunshine gives
beauty and loveliness to t r flower, not
the dark cloud. You have troubles; so
do a.I men; arid it is well enough that
they do. They give us fresh com gc and
fortitude. Let things look dark; the day
will con e when the sun wi I -hine. The
lane turns sene where, and light will
spring from darkness. Look to the bright
side. Dr. Johnson said: “It is worth a
thousand pounds a year to have the habit
of looking on the bright side of things.”

F.i i -t the Gazette office, a fino
bre oh-luaiing, double barreled shot gun:
also, a lot of thick paper,
advancing.
Last Sunday niglu we received
beautifully-printed invitation to attend
the Inaugural ball of the Mayor nnd
Council of Summerville, Gu., to bo given
at the Barksdale House on January 29th
1883. The invitation coming at this
particular time reminds us that it has
been six years to-day since we left
Chattooga Coun’y, while the names on
the various committees associate them
selvos with many pleasant reminiscences
of happy school hoy days. But many
changes have taken place since then.
Six years ago the business portion of
Summerville amounted to three drygoods
stores, o o saloon, one hotel, and livery
stable, one blacksmith shop, one public
school with perhaps sixty pupils, and
probably fifty dilapidated looking
dwelling houses. The town had no
government other than the rest of the
county, ami the people seemed content
to let things drag along without any effort
at improvement a* the war had loft them.
A wonderful revolution sectucs to have
swept over the entire State, howjver,
within the last few years, and this
particular county appears to have kept
march with the more favored of
the State in the matter of improvements.
The little sleepy vilGge of six years ago
has suddenly become a city of some
importance, and ifwi ate to believe the
local paper, the dry-goods houses now
number more th. n a d<>z n, while other
branches of trade have advanced accord
ingly. The old sohoolhouse has been
superseded by a well-built colhge, and
150 pupils are in daily attendance. The
time-worn dwelling houses have b en
replaced by scores of neat cottages, and
an air of hopefulness prevudes the entire
country. They now have a city go em
inent and elect a Mayor, Reai rder and
five Couneilmetnen, and actually have
Inaugural Balls. It would afford me
much pleasure to he wlh you ou an
occasion of this kind, gentlemen and
ladies, hut on account of distance you
will please excuse me, und instead, accept,
my ‘‘rainbow regards” and best wishes
thatyour fu'uro nay beall that the most
sanguine may wish, and that you may all
live to celebrate, many more Inaugural
Balls. Mariposa (( \il. ) Herald,
BEFORE THU WHITE SETTLEMENT.
Thousands of years before Columbus
sighted Hispaniola, a dense population
covered the country now known as
Arizona and'New Mexico. They were a
semi-civilized people, far advauced
beyond savage life, as is shown by the
remains of their pottery, temples, und
dwelling houses. They stem lo haye
been cor qtiered by warlike savages from
more northern regions, probably the an
cestors of the fierce Apaches and (hutian
ches, who have cau-ed our little army so
much trouble in times past. Colonel
Stephenson has juM returned from ex
ploring the homes of the Ciifl dwtllers.
It seems that on precipices thousands ol
fe> t above the plains below have been
found the remains of villages where
generations must have lived an 1 died
under the most extraordingry circum
stances. The houses could he reached
only by the most expert gymnasts who
were forced to climb over a thousand
feet up the cliffs to reach their habitations.
Some of these villages contained evi
dently, thousand of people. How they
procured food and sustained lift; in these
inaecssible localities is a mystery. The e
(Miff dwelling* were probubly places of
refuge for the people of the pbtins when
defeated by their savage assailants.
