Ciumi are giving proof that tliey are
in enrueat. They have recently lielil a
meeting with a view to the preparatory
Htiulies before forming a company for it
countruction. This is a proper course,
for the project is not to he entered upon
lightly or ignorantly. In the meantime
the agitation has aroused French suscep
tibilities, and has given much offense to
M. do Ijesscjis. But M. de Losseps has
it in his jlower to cut from under the
feet of the projectors most of the ground
they stand upon. The English Govern
ment owns nearly have the shares of the
existing company, and English trade
supplies about eighty per cent, of its
I rattle. England, therefore, is Imyond all
comparison the greatest shareholder,
snd in a still more decided manner she is
llic greatest customer. But, as a mat
ter of fact, she had had only three out of
twenty four directors on the board, ami
does not participate at all in the admin
i,(ration.
The ep.T.EiuiATKD DAinv carp, which

is again agitated. The dairy man is a
pugnacious individual, Frank Ward by
inline, who hits built up asloo, ooo dairy
business, and declines to abate bis gongs,
reduce his cows, or suppress his wagons
for the benefit of a few nervous gentle
men in liis neighborhood. There an
several bushels of accusations against
Mr. Ward describing him as a public
nuisance, but unfortunately for the nerv
ous gentlemen, besides alleging tlmt the
Alderney dairy kept the whole ward in
winch it was situated in an uproar
for twenty-four hours in the day,
even days in the week and fifty-two
ceks in tin year, they accused Mr.
Ward of not keeping his premises clean.
Air. Ward thereby hit back at them by
having first his own promises photo
i mplied, and then their buck yards,
1 torn tlie roofs of houses and from holes
in the brnkeii-down fences. At present
there arc forty lawyers engaged on either
side, and the victory promises to perch
on the banners of the milkman.
A system op KXOtmstONS to America
and back is attracting interest in the
German capital, the route being by way
of Idvcrjiool. The inducements held
out in regard to the number of interest
ing sights to lie seen in the New World
are flattering to this country. But there
rooms to be no need of taking extra
pains to encourage the German move
incnt to America, and perhaps it may be
found that some who pay for the round
trip, having once got hero, will throw
up their return tickets, especially should
they have the prospect of compulsory
military service on arriving at home.

labor is over full. It is estimated that
there are now 5,000 people in this cit

that wield the nx and spade. It is quite

those are hard to get. Many of the kid

find the country fullof “yaps" that they
can gull at pleasure, forgetting, or never

Ik thi! qtTAtinv near I’oeopson, (Abes

and withdrew to await the result. Upon
returning after the explosion he was sur

utensils instead of shattered rocks.
There lay u stove, several tin etuis and mi

the blast had broken upon a secret cave
which somebody long ago lmd used ns a

occupant may have been "Joe II ire,” u

The funnel-shaped cloud tipped com

the ground. There was a suffocating

collided. Tile collision was marked By a
flap of thunder and a glare of lightning.
Then came a roaring wind, and 1 saw
the big cloud that had been formed By

Bosom rather than whirl around. 1 was
about a mile out of the cloud's course.
But the strong wind struck me downward

passed, and then the hot sun poured

local tradition it came to receive that

sent a petition to Washington to have a

asked to suggest a name that would

that “ the people were not particular so

A Georgia Man’s Revenge.
I t was a bleak, raw pril day as we

That was on tlie right hand side, third

“ What for ?”

“ I’m none too cold.”
“ But it lets dust in.”

Nothing further was said, lint tin

Appearance of l’leiiro-Pnemmmia.
A Washington dispatch says: The
appearance of contagious pleuro pneu
monia among the cattle in this vicinity
is causing much uneasiness to dairymen
and stockmen. Thus far only five eases
are positively known to have occurred,
all at a place called Banning’s Bridge, in
the suburbs of the eit v, but a number of
others have been reported to the authori
ties. Four of the infected animals in
the eases above referred to have died,
and the fifth has been removed to the
experimental veterinary station recently
established here under the direction ol
the Agricultm-.il Department. Every
fl'ort will he made to prevent the spread
of the disease, but there is much anxiety
as to the result, for the reason that,
when pi euro-pneumonia appeared here
in a precisely similar way in 1878, it
spread to Maryland and Virginia, and
was with difficulty stamped out.

“How so?”
“Guess," said Mr. Arthur.

“An ex-St root Commissioner?" oh*

“Neither,” said the President “Lis

“Impossible.”
“Fact, I assure you,” Raid Air. Arthur.
The colored man was called over and
questioned:

The colored representative showed his

Something Hotter Than Railroads.
I hiring a Western trip of one of New
York's railroad kings, made last year, it
became known through the passenger
couches that his private ear was attached
to the train, and as the conductor entered
one of the coaches a man from Northern
Indiana beckoned to him and asked:
"Is Air. CouldV ear with this train!”
“Yes, sir."
"Is Mr. Could ill that ear?"
“He is."
‘‘Can 1 go in and see him?”
"Ifyou can gel in."
"Well, I’ll try," said the man, as he
rose up. "I've got a model here of the
smartest, cutest and best washing
masheeii ever invented, and if Mr. Could
w ill drop his railroads and take hold of
this with me, I'll warrant him a steady
income, after the first year, of §lO a
week."
He didn't succeed in entering the car.
and that may he the reason why Mr.
Could is still in the Railroad business.—

will render the large farms, with their
great inimher of servants and plow

spirit oft% farmers, whose representa

most radical Deputies existing, will re
ceive a fresh stimulant. The import
ance of the measure is clear, for, should
the conflict with the Crown bring about
an armed intervention on the part
Sweden, the leaders of the Norw,g...n
Parliament would have a large army ol

floor above. The interest clerk is an
auburn-haired individual of the most

chronic, pud he is made the butt of many
a quiet practical joke. The greatest of
these was played some time ago by one
of his intimate personal friends, who ob
tained permission from Treasurer Gilftlla.ii
to try his little scheme. The gentlemun
armed himself with about ‘25 feet of
twine, mid attached to on© end of it u ma
chine composed of a steel prod pointed
as fine ns a needle, and a solid piece ot
rubber as a ballast. He stationed him
self m the gallery directly over the in
terest clerk’s desk, where there were
heaps of money nil nicely done up in
packages. Then he slowly let down his
string until it was directly over a large
package, and releasing his bold on the
twine, the steel prod impaled a bundh
of notes, which he quickly drew to the
gallery, and having secured them rushed
to the treasurer's office with bis prize
with proved to be fift.OOO in legal tender.
Meanwhile the interest clerk saw’ his
money go skyward and gave ihe general
alarm, but not in time, however, to de
feet the culprit. The clerk was nearly
mixed whim be received a note signed
“ James Giltillan,” asking him to come
at once to the treasurer’s office. He w ent
us fast us bis legs could carry him, and
imagine bis joy when the treasurer
banded him the missing &H,OOO, advising
him to be more careful that his inniie\
did not “ take unto itself wings and tb

has taught the department a good lesson,
to wit : tlmt it was possible for a ch*v< .
