TEMPERANCE.
Editor Gazette:
Tho prohibition of the sale of whisky
is a question in which all good ciliz ns
nro interested. I have ho fight to make
on men, as individuals, nothing personal
to say of any ono, but I desire to discuss
a principle as such. 1 am in favor ot
prohibition, and hope at an early day to
know that whisky oulmot he sold in Chat
tooga county. The question arises, how
is this to bo accomplished ? It can he
done by a strong public sentiment. If
the people of Summerville will take hold
of this matter earnestly, and demand
prohibition, upon proper grounds; not
personal, for or’against any one. but for
the good ofthe town and community; it
oan and will ho accomplished. No man
has a moral right to demand the Oontinu
ation of a business that is injurious to
the best interest of the community at
largo, although ho may believo that his
persona! interests are advanced by it.
The robbor oan say, "If advnnoos my
personal interests to murder the traveler,
and rob’him of his money.” But moral
law, and every other kind of law, and
common sense, say, "Do not license, but
prohibit, murder and robbery.” 80, if
the sale of whisky is deleterious to the
best interests of society, the same laws
say, "Prohibit its sale.”
Reasons why the sale of whisky should
be prohibited. Every citizen of Sum
merville knows tho school interest has
been the means of advancing the value of
real ostate from ono to three hundred
per cent in tho last two years; that it is
building up the town. Now, if this pros
perity continues. the stbool interest must
continue, and everything must be taken
out of the way that would hinder its
prosperity. Now, will the s ale of whis
ky hinder the progress of tho school ?
Yes. Tho local advantages of Summer
ville as an educational center are not sur
passed in North Georgia. You have
good water, are as healthy as any oom
tuunity in Georgia, have ohurehos, Sab
bath sohools, good boarding houses, and
reasonable prices for board. Yon had last
year, and the sohool has opened this year
with, a goodly number of girl boarders;
but where are the hoys? It is true there
are souio in sohool, hut a considerably
less number of yaung men than young
ladies. Why is this so? In traveling
through tho country and talking with
parents about sending their hoys to Sum
merville school, the exouse is, “Where
whiskey is sold, 1 will not send my boys."
Thoughtful parents will not send their
boys where they are exposed to this
temptation, when there aro so many
places where they are. free from it. Now.
if you would have the sohool to grow in
numbers, and prosper, this evil must he
removed. This is ono reason why it
should he prohibited. By the consent
of tho editor I will, D. V., give other
reasons in future paperß. But I hoar
someone soy, "You take away men’s
liberties.” Another says, “You will
take away the revenue it brings into oui
treasury.” If we cannot suppress the
liquor traffic, wo cannot suppress coun
terfeiting, gambling, tho circulation of
obsceuo books, horse stealing, murder ;
therefore tho laws against these crimes
are a failure, and the correct, thing will
ho to license them. Tax a man $l,00l)
per year for the privilege of making
counterfeit money; the people nro not
compelled to take it, and if men do take
it and get swindled, it is their own (ault;
they ought to have known better. Make
men pay SSOO for the privilege of keep
ing a gambling house, and if our young
men are taken in and fined, it is their
own fault; they were not oompelled to go
there, and, besides, it pays a laigo reve
nue. loot the liconse on ot scene books
and pictures be $600; they arc terribly
damaging to morals, but then, no ono is
compelled to read them. Bet them alone;
they will not hurt you. Place the license
on stealing at $2,000; if the is ex
port, he can make money and pay a big
license; then, if people don’t want their
property stolen, let them have looks on
everything. Let the license on murder
be $2,000; the liquor traffic pays ah' ut
that sum into the treasuries of city, coun
ty, state, and nation, for every man it
murders. What an enormous revci ue
the licensing of crime will bring in; and 1
defy any man, who favors licensing the
liquor traffio, to show any good reason
why all these other crimes should not be
licensed.
I appeal to all Christian men and wo
men, and all who want good society, good
morals, and financial prosperity, to unite
their influence and effort in driving this,
the greatest of all evils, from our land.
My object is to harm no ono, bat to bene
fit all. D. T. Espy.
