D, on “The Purpose.” The sue
onsa with which Mr. has met in
•disposing of his poems, the high appre
ciation expressed by every one who reads
them, and the universal favor with which
his lectures have been reoeivod, have
madh a tolling improvement in bis eonfi
donee in bin rdf. While his lecture on
"Poetsy, its Uses and Al uses” was good,
and was a production of which the speak
er might well be proud, it would pass at
a fcartul discount compared with ‘‘The
Purpose.” For two hours his audience
listened unwearied, often breaking limn
wrapt attention into rounds of applause,
and then at some olc.ver witticism burst
ing into prolonged laughter. Tiro entire
lecture was stul led with the most brill
iant thoughts, and Mr. Taylor may rest
assured that, whenever he wants to s:.y

Brewster, aged 1 I, was instantly killed
by the discharge of the gun which lie

Lewis Houston, negro, attempted to
outrage a white woman. The next
n ght 150 masked men took him from
the jail and hung him. The next night
the negroes made so many threats that
the mayor ordered out two military
companies to protect the town.

Ladiga, lias been burned.
In Polk county, on the 15th ult., John
Own and bis father went to Liwrencl
Simpson’s house, and commenced quar
reling. Owen threw a brickbat, which
struck Simpson s wife. Simpson cracked
Owen’s skull with a s iek, causing death
the next day The coroner’s jury pro
tiounoi and il wilful murder.

Irving shot Richard Simmons through
