PROHIBITION AND INTEMPERANCE,
‘‘He is worse than an infidel, who fails
to provide food and raiment for his
own family.” To lioense barrooms aud
patronise them, is certainly "turning
infidel." "You will squander not only
your own patrimony, but the heritage
whioh rightfully belongs to your wife and
children, and you will finally heoome a
downright drunkard, a brute, a by-word,
and a reproach, forfeiting all claims upon
God's mercy and goodness, and the king
dom of heaven, which no drunkard oan
inherit, as has already been promulgated
to the world in the book of Holy Writ."
But I must quote on: "By licensing those
brs to sell intoxioating liquors, you also
fill the ooffera of a few other men of your
town. Some of the merchants are bitterly
opposed to prohibition. They say if you
prohibit the sale ot intoxicating liquors
by retail you injure the trade of the town,
and that it will go down in a few years."
I can only say hor trade is founded upon
but a slender basis, if prohibition can
injure it. Such reasoning is absurd,
preposterous in the extreme, yet, even if
it wete true, if it require sin, iniquity,
erituc, and bloodshed, to build up the
trade of a town, it were better for her to
sink ; for it will be more tolerable tor her
in the day of judgment if she fall in con
demning these heinous evils by votiug for
prohibition than if she build up a
miraculous trade upon the salo ol intoxi
oating drinks. Now, theirs is a fallacious
reasoning. It has been olearly proven
and demonstrated that the trade of other
towns and counties has been increased
fitly per cent by prohibition; and tho
morality of said towns and oountiei so
enhanced that civil, respectable people
are not afraid to visit these plaoes. But
this is the secret; these merchants, who
tell you that prohibition will ruin their
trade, know full well that the farmer,
being the ohief of ti e nation, ‘feedeth
all;’ and if there is a dim possibility that
th" -ale of intoxicating liquor will increase
tradi '• is only in 'lns way; these
me-O' .am who oppose inhibition know
that the world is maintained by the labor
of tlie fanner, that the eovton whioh he
ha“ toiled through summer's heat to
make, and wint, r's oold to gathar, must
ei to them in autumn They preach
up i’ crease of trade by the sale of intoxi
c,ni - liquors to keei these liars running
th y.m u,av l-e attracted to tho town,
then the barrooms, where they know you
wili go lor, as yon think at the ti ne, only
one drink, and leave perhap , but as you
go yon meet some friend, as you both
would -m (hut in reality a i enemy if he
asks you to drink), who wishes to treat,
and you nth take the ee nd and in the
game way the third is taken, until you are
about ‘three sheets in the wind.’ You
did not intend to get in this condition,
but unconsciously vou did, and you are
ready now, as the merchant knows, ill
this half drunken, almost hrutal state, to
increase his trade. You feel rich, with
‘no pool kin.’ The merchant, wi'h Ilia
bland smiles and courteous manners, wel
comes ynu to his counters; lie knows with
but a solicitation ou his part, you will
trade, as you are feeling so rich, ex
traviig,.le v Yet he is not afraid to
trii-t y n Oh. o, certainly not, after
having n-'l tin seif with liens upon
your ci 'iis and personal effects. He
thinks if i lie cotton di es not satisfy his
demands, upon your credit, your corn,
potat ms, eto.. will, leaving your wife and
otiildren. if need he, to suffer for food and
raiment, that hi- coffers may lie filled
and trade increased, as they say. You
would not have traded so heavily if you
had not first visited these barrooms, and
drank until reason was well nigh de
throned, and powerless to assert her oon
trol over yonr thinking facilities. I ap
peal to your better judgment, were you
ca|iahle of thinking, acting, and trading,
as a sensible man should and would? Is
this the state of things you would per
petuate by licensing liquor saloons?
