A goodly crowd collected at the
academy last Friday night to hear the
scholastic debating society discuss the
question, “Is mau a vapor, and full of
woes?" The affirmative was maintained
by Bass Close, Austin Smith Mack Sim
mons, Earl Jackson, Will Johnson, and
At Hamilton; the negative by Walter
Sturdivant, Ed Holcotnb, J. P. Bhattuck,
Peter Ruhl. John Starling and At Kirby.
Cupt. Jackson decided that on the whole
the affirmative had produced the
strongest argument; but said that, if it
were admissible to divide the question,
he would decide the first part for the
affirmative, and the last part for the
negative.

TRIBUTE OF KKSI’ECT.
Rev. Richard Willbanks, who died at
his home near Trion Factory, January
9th, 1884, of paralysis, was born in
Anderson Distriot, South Carolina, about
the year 1805; made a profession of
religion, and joined the M. E. Church,
South, when about 14 years of ago. Ho
moved to Jackson county, Georgia, about
the year 1822. On the 30th of December,
1824, ho was happily married to Miss
Nancy Saunders, of that county, who
survives him. He moved to Chnttooga
oounty and settled in Dry Valley in 1846.
In 1850 he moved to the present family
residence, near Trion Factory, whore he
resided up to the time of his death. He
was a class leader of Ilopowell Church,
Dry Pond Camp Ground, Jackson oounty.
in 1839 and 1841: was set apart to the
office of deacon December 16th, 1855, at
LaGrange: was elected an elder December
2d, 1870, at Augusta. His membership
was at Penn’s Chapel for more than 30
years.
There wore horn to him five children,
one of whom whs drowned in Chattooga
river while bathing in 1847: the other
fout are still living, lie had been afflicted
for several years with asthma or hay
fever. His love for God and his works
was more than a principle; it was a koly
passion, He loved the church and the
brethren with a pure heart fervently;
delighted himself in their convocations,
and erjoyed the oommunion of saints.
The field of his ministerial labor was
chiefly in Chattooga county. He spent
the last few ytais of his life in the quiet
of home, having had son s light strokes
of paralysis, which kept him 01, sely oon
fined. A few months before his death lie
had a stroke from wl ich he never re
oovrred. Though he reaped nut the full
harvest of joy at the su'down of life on
earih, we can only believe with full
assurance that he fell asleep in Jesus. A
good man has departed. To his ptricken
family, relatives ami friends we would
oomiuend his many virtues, that they
like him may be ready when the summons
eornes. G. B. Mteiib.
