Editor Gazette:
I notice in the columns ol vour paper
that ilie young men of Summerville had
challenged the Trion hoys for a debate,
but the challenge was riot accepted. The
inference drawn was that the Trion boys
are wanting in pluck and courage to meet
the Summerville boys; but 1 take the
responsibility upon myself, and say we
are not wanting in either of these
qualities, but we are chock full of them.
And 1 furthermore say that I will submit
two queries to the Summerville boys:
Ist, Is conscience innate? 2d, Is the
license law right? I will take the negative
side of cither; and challenge any three
men of your town to oppose me.

COTTON MANUFACTURE.
Col. Wm. H. Young, president of the
Eagle ft Pltcnix mills, at Columbus, Ga.,
stated in a recent letter to Hon. Hugh
Buchanan that cotton mills of the capacity
of tho Eaglo & Phenix had an advantage
of $350 a day over mills in New England
of tho same capacity. This statement
having been disputed by a Northern
spinner, Col. Young gives the Charleston
News and Courier the following con
vincing facts aud figures to support his
assertion:
The following is the cost of a hale of
cotton bought in Columbus, Ga., adding
all expenses to lay it down in a mill in the
interior|of New England in their picking
room.
COST TO NEW ENGLAND MILL.
Say 1 bale of cotton weighing 175
pounds, oosting 10c per pound--$47.50

The commissions in the above table (I)
include those of agents or parties who
order the ooltou, which is a general
custom, the buyer hero paying said agent
a return of commission of 50 cents per
bale.
The loss of weight, shown in tho last
item of the table, arises from re-sampling
(after it is weighed) and plucking the
bales for mix packs, loss on the way and
general shrinkage (admitted by Northern
mills).
COST TO COLUMBUS MILL.
Say one bale cotton, weighing 475
tt>*. costing 10c per ih sl7 50
Brokerage, buying and druyage to

Warehouse delivery 25
Total $48.05
A hale of 475 pounds yields in goods
404 pounds (loss 71 pounds) and a
Northern mill pay- freight on this 71
pound*, an expense of say 04 cents,
which is not incurred by any Southern
mill.
Another item is that of ginning. This
con panv has a public gin. We buy cot
ton in the see-1 or gin for toll (but do not
pack in b'h -) U,. t,,, y planter’s rem
nants and liglu weight hales, and as this
is tone (saving weight of hag and ties)
tin- earn on ail oi consumption equals }
ee i poun . -i 60 cents per bale.
II so two i ems. therefore—that ol
freight saved on the 71 pounds lost (64
cents) and the saving in ginning (60
cents)—-roduce the cost to fho Southern
mill $1.24, making the total cost only
$46 81.
RECAPITULATION.
Cost to interior New Kngland mill $54.27
Cost to Columbus mill 46 81
Gain for Southern mill per ba!e--$ 7.46
This gain of $7.46 per hale on 50 hales
per day is $373, which more thau justifies
my letter to Judge Buchanan. But this
is not all. One item is: We sell our
bagging and tics to the planters to pack
their cotton in and thus gain largely over
a New England mill, and also in the sale
of all of our waste. Again, we buy our
cotton (or cun do so) to-day and put it in
our picker-rooui to-morrow, and thus
gain (in time) say fifteen days interest.
There are other local advantrges that I
have not cited. It is proper to add,
however, that (in the past ten days) :he
railroad wars have reduced rates 15-100
cents per pound. It is not considered
permanent, hut if it should he it would
reduce our advantages by 15-100 0,-nts
per 100 pounds per hale, or say per hale
71 cents, and per day on 50 bales say
$35 50, still leaving our daily advantages
$337.50. If “Spinuer” in a Southern
mill cannot utilize the advantages of his
Southern mill, it is clearly his fault, or
his mill is badly located.

Golev s Lady’s Book for May opens
with a charming frontispiece entitled
“Chums.” This engraving ia a piquant
little .-tudy in black and white, and serves
to illustrate a narrative poem by Dorothy
Holroyd. The picture represents a chub
by little child, sane culottes, sous every
thing, sitting on a plank that overreaches
the water, beside n grave and dignified
dog. The pose, is exceedingly pretty, and
winning enough to give “Chums’’ a wide
popularity. Miss Reeves’s story, “The
Nut-Brown Maid,” proceeds this month
with growing interest. Agatha’s love for
Norman, which is just revealing its full
power, lends to the story all tho fascina
tion that accompanies the study of a wo
man’s heart. “Tam" progresses in a
spirited manner, and is winning many
well deserved compliments from the press
Anew feature this month is a contribu
tion by “Old Vicissitudes," tho world
renowned humorous writer for tho New
Yotk Sunday Mercury. “My Experience
as an Earthly Boarder” is a laughable
sketch, wl.ioh loses none id’its pungency
and wit from the fact that it is neither
extravagant nor overdrawn, but well Cil
ciliated to div ert one by a simple present
ation of the funny side of thiogs. “The
Duchess," tho well known authoress of
,‘Phyllis,” “Molly Bawn," oto., clo.,
contributes this month a story written
whan she was hut 16 years old. The re
mainder of the book is filled up with the
usual quota ol fine engraved and colored
plates, music, and varied designs, besides
numerous creditable poems and stor es.
