A cyclone swept over eastern Minne

$1,400,000 worth of property was de
stroyed.
The grand jury’s presentments, the
communication headed “To Doctors,"
and Hon. J. C. Clement* letter of ac
ceptance, were received to late to be
published last week.
We learn that our young friend, J. D.
Taylor, passed bis examination very
creditably indeed. A thorough prepara
tion, and a determination to succeed, are
the two elements of success.
Capt. R. L. Hoxie, U. S. engineer in
charge of the improvement of the Coosa
River, promises to have tho locks br ow
Greensport completed in time to move
the present crop of cotton, if possible.
Within seven days two mad dogs have
been killed near the southern line of this
district; one belonging to J. W. Rivers,
and one to John Kellett. Several others
which were known or suspected to Lave
been bitten, have been killed.
W. 8. Sparks presents himself as a
candidate for tax collector. He is a
worthy man, and so crippled that he can

At a meeting of Tammany Hall last
Friday night, resolutions pledging sup
port to Cleveland were passed by 810 to
87. Ex-senator Grady opposed tho res
olutions, and declared himself a support
er of Butler. John Kelly was called on,
but repused to speak.
I will not buy baled cotton till further
notice. I will gin, and will buy all I gin.
I will have eight gins running, and no
one will be detained over night.

We heartily endorse the compliments
of the grand jury to the judge and solici
tor genera). Judge Branham has labor
ed faithfully to clear tho docket. There
are only 12 eases left over, and these it
was not possible to try. He is mild, but
firm; public business must be dispatch
ed, but each individual is treated with
all courtesy, and any favor which will not
unreasonably delay the proceedings of
court, is grunted.

Thompson Hiles has suspended from
the ceiling in bis store the picture of a
lady; a young gentleman, (her lover per
haps), standing at her left side, his
right arm thrown around her waist, and
he just in the act of imprinting one of
those soft, sweet kisses upon the pair of
upturned ruby lips—the countenance cf
whose owner shows pure delight. One
ofour young ladies stopped into Hiles’
store one day last week, and glancing up
at tho picture, remarked to Joe Pursley,
“Ain’t she having a good time ?” Joe
replied, “Bet your sweet life, she is.”
And then Joe wondered why some folxs
were so peculiar.

Editor Gazette:
I desire through the columns of the
Gazette to suggest to the medical pro
fession of Chattooga county the organi
zation of a Medical Association. YVe
ought to have it for the sake of harmony,
and its social advantages ; but especially
for the benefits to be derived from an
interchange ol ideas on mediea! subjects.
I suggest that some member of tho pro
fession in the county call a mooting at an
early date, for the purpose of organizing,
provided t hat after a little consultation
enough of the profession favor tho movo
to justify tho effort. YV'e might meet
monthly, every two months, or quarterly,
according to the desire of the organiza

The items ol local news in Dirttown
are very scarce. The valley is suffering
from a protracted droytb, which has
damaged tho crops verv much. Fodder
pulling is the order of the day, and is
nearly over. Cotton has been throwing
off its fruit for tho past week, and is
opening rapidly. Mr. Willis Killgore is
cutting down his coin and stacking it in
the field; besides be is building anew
gin house on the Burn’s place. Misses
Lu ane Laura Dickson, f Walker county
are visiting in our community. Politics
is at fever heat. Mr. Sum Jones spoke
Saturday night at our academy. Good
men are supporting both candidates, but
after a careful canvass if the District,
which is the home of Samuel Jones, the
writer is forced to the conclusion that, if
tho voters turn out to tho election, and
do what they now say they will do, 0. C.
Clcghorn will poll a decided majority of
the votoscast. Wc uiny ho too sanguine,
as wo aro a strong personal friend and
supporter of Mr. Clcghorn.
