The Marietta Journal comes out with new type. It has long been one of the best weeklies in the state. A Hostoo virl never -peaks of the “naked truth.” .She speaks of it as “truth divested of apparel.” The certificate of G. IV Hollis and John Mattox was handed in last week, but omitted through ruisundcr landing ol the object. A Milwaukee druggist says that the way a porous plaster acts Is to retain the back firmly in place while the pain crawls out at the holes. There have been interesting meetings in the Baptist church every night this week. They will probably continue at least till Sunday. We publish in this issue the card of H. He is so well known all over the county that nothing which we can say will add any thing to his claims. Henry Sullivan, of Coldwater, was bitten on the foot by a dog last week. Wes Shropshire brought his better half to town yesterday. He’s begun to enjoy life now; some other young men about town (and a few old ones) would be happier if thoy would follow his example. They are occupying Ben Edmondson’s new houso. A dollar saved is equal to ono made, and if you want to realize this fact in the fullest sense, call on J. W. W’c arc informed that last Wednesday, as Milos Whitlow, of Walker comity, opened his barn, the first thing that greeted his eyes was the corpse of Mr. Stoner, bis employe, swinging from a joist. ’Hie supposed cause of bis suicide is that ML* Ann Jackson, who had, onco or oftener, promised to marry him, had married another man the night before. Turnips and gardens generally much injured by dry weather. Cotton opening rapidly; 185 pounds the best day’s picking we have heard of so far. In a literary and artistic point of view, Deinorest’s Magazine for October is an admirable number. The frontispiece, “Decoy Ducks,” which is something now in art, is very beautiful, and the other illustrations are excellent. Among the articles specially worthy of note are, “Student Life in Paris,’’ “Down the Red Sfa,” “Popo’s Villa at Twicken ham,” and “How We Live in New York,” by Jennie June. The stories are entertaining, the poems good, and the various depar' menu are replete with useful and agreeable reading, such as is acceptable in every household. All iu the Line of Nature. Ballenger ho was not able to fill his ap pointment here on Saturday night and Sunday. The time was tilled by Rev. J. L. King, of LaFayotto, a Presbyterian. He preached two excellent sermons and tho people seemed well pleased, and would like to have him visit Trlon again and preach. Tho citizens of Trioti and vicinity wero addressed last night by Hon. John W. Maddox, candidate for tho state senate, and S. E. Jones, C. C. Cicghorn, and A. Y. Powell, candidates for representative. Tho candidates all seemed to agree upon the same line of policy: equal rights for all; exact justico to all; equal taxation upon all. All the speakers (ailed to notice what seems to the writer to ho unequal taxation, incorporated in the new rood law for this county. If you will examine the bill you will find that it levies a tax of 25 per cent on tho State tax upon all alike; but when it comes to spending the money thus raised by a tax upon all alike, the law says none of the money thus raised shall he applied to the improvement or tho roads inside* the c-rporations of Summerville, Raccoon Mills, and Trion, but shall all be applied to the improvement of the roads outside the corporations. Not a single one of the candidates mentioned this inequality in taxation, but all with one accord sailed into corporations for availing themselves of the benefit of any laws that might favor them. Now why all this ado about equal taxation? It so happens that three of the candidates live inside of ccrpora tions: why did they not say somethin: about being unequally burdened? You cannot put it upon any other ground t* an that corporations, instead of being tho enemies of (he people, ure their friends; because the corporations mentioned, or property within their limits, after next year, will pay more tax than all tho balance of the county. You do not hear any of theso men going round and saj ing, “Tax the people outside to work inside." Why*? Because tho people would raise such a hue and cry about unequal taxa tion that no mau would dare introduce such a bill. The factory started up yesterday as usual. All returned to their work with renewed vigor. B. A. Close has a full school, and seems to he getting along very well. Gus Strange is now a citizen of Trion. September 23, 1884. Trion. A CARD. That he was in the dis charge of said duty for a time ; took sick, and returned home; and that he never at any time received any compensation whatever for his services; that the Board discussed the propriety of letting said work nut by contract, and agreed unanimously to hire a superintendent and laborers at a stipulated price; said work was done accordingly, and a full and complete return made, accounting for every dollar appropriated, the re cords and file showing to whom every dollar was paid. The abuvo certificate is given by me, officially upon solicitation, and is not given with a view of aiding, or prejudic ing, tho interests of either candidate, they all being my personal friends. Geo- 1). Hollis. A CARP. Editor Gazette : I take this opportunity to notice an article in last week’s issue reflecting upon Mr. Sam Jones’ political prospects in Dirttown. I have no war to make upon Homo for his opinion, but will say that opinions widely vary. Mr. Jones’ certificate, as endorsed by a number ol our best citizens, is a sufficient guarantee as to his standing in his own community, and the polls on tho Ist Wednesday in October will swell that certificate to a respectable majority. Many others would have gladly added their names, but deeming it unnecessary, intend to prove their position in his favor by the rights of liberty which they enjoy in this country. I very much deprecate any feelings of prejudice, especially when such sentiments are offered to tho pub lic. A Voter. Dirttown, Sept. 22d, 1884. UESPONSK TO Dlt. CLEMENTS. Editor Gazette: I notice in your last issue a suggestion from Dr. J.- W. Clements, of Subligna, that the physicians of tho county have a meeting to consider the propriety of or ganizing a County Medical Society, I most heartily endorse the suggestion, not only for the physicians of Chattooga county, but those living in adjoining counties near enough to meet with us, and assist in organizing and perpetuat ing a medical society that will not only be of utility to the Profession tut benefit the whole people of the county. I further suggest Summerville the place of meeting, and the 2nd Saturday in October the day; and that Dr. Jack Bryant will please arrange for a room in which to hold the meeting. It. Y. Rcdioil, M.
