POLITICAL. Oregon Republican State Convention April 7. -“P § ■ M rs. A. G. Rammnck is to bo made a No* t*ry Public in Illinois —tbe first of tbe sea son. Motto for the Ways and Means Commit tee in the matter of tariff on stiver —“We do preeeive here a divided dutv,” The Legislatures of I own, Kansas and Wisconsin have each elected a woman as Engrossing Clerk. ‘.John” was the entire name of a colored candidate for District Clerk at Corsicana, Texas, at the recent election. Ohio having ratified the 15th Amend ment, the Columbus State Journal vents its pent up feelings by crying ‘ Glory !” The Connecticut Democratic State Com mittee have designated Tuesday, the 22d of February, as the day of meeting of the State Convention. The Kentucke Senate passed n bill, on Thursday, to establish anew county in that State, to be called the county of Lee, in honor of Robert E. Lee. The name of William S. Groesbeck, of Cincinnati, is mentioned by some Western papers as a possible Democratic candidate for the Presidency is 72. The Democratic press of Connecticut •etm to think that James E. English will again be the nominee of the party for the Governorship this spring. Now that Ohio has adopted the 15th Amendment Potts will probubly go to Mon* tnna. and Ashlev will be out of a place. It is generally understood that Governor Scott will be the Republican candidate for Governor of South Carolina next term. The election is in November of this year. The Providence Journal says that noth* ing can save Rhode Island from losing one Representative in Congress under the com* ing apportionment. The Richmond State Journal looks upon an early reunion of West Virginia and Virs ginia as not inprobable, and is ready to cry speed the day. The Kentucky House of Representatives has passed a bill substituting imprisonment for stripes as a punishment for crime.— Now what says Delaware ? The Illinois Constitutional Convention has been “startled” by a committee's re port that the knives furnished the members of the last Legislature cost $8,25 apiece. A temperance organ in main complains that the new State AttorneyoGeneral is a “liberal” Republican as regards the Pro hibitory law—that is, favors wiping it out. New Orleans cries aloud for little money. An apple or an orange now cost a “pica yune” there, and a man with four cents would go hungry because he could buy nothing with them. Governor Bullock, of Georgia, denie that he is a candidate for United Senator. He professes to be pious and good, and only “wants to be an angel and with the angeis stand.” Almost one of the last political squibs of the lamented Prentice was the following: “It is understood that Butler would have been a candidate for the Spanish throne if the crown jewels had not already been stol* en." Butler recently remarked to a Boston Post correspondent that he did not care what the about him. Many of them had misrepresented him, called him harsh names, but he did not see that any of them called him a fool. Personal Explanations.— Mr. Snmner has discovered an effective way of prevent ing other Senators from personally explain ing away his charge against them. Ue threatens to make an hour’s speech in re ply.—Herald. Ex-Oongressman Samuel Oldbam Peyton of Kentucky, died at Hartford in that State on the 17th inst., aged 70 years. Beau Hickman is giving lessons in de<* portment to a large but select class cf un washed Congressmen in WashiLgton. The Washington Chronicle is said to be preparing a reply to Mr. Dawes’ speech, which reply is inspired by Secretaries Robeson and Oresswell. Lindsay Musx, who ushers in visitors to tbe Seßretary of Navy, was doing the same thing two years before the present Secreta* r j was born, and has beeu doing it evero since. Wright, State Senator from Beaufort, S. G., the same negro who was ejected from tbe ladies’ car of the Danville Railroad, is a candidate for a seat in the Supreme Court of that State. PERSONAL. Both Bismark and Napoleon wrote al ways with old fashioned goose quills. Dr. Robert Breckinridge is reported to be on the point of leaving the Presbyterian communion. The Count of Paris believes that lie is soon to be King of the French, or President of a French Republic. James Gordon Bennett, Sr., of the New York Herald, is confined to his room, and too ill to see friends who call. Miss (Hive Logan and Miss Kate Field are engaged to lecture every week, and night, to the end of the lecture season. The same is true of Anna Dickinson. Geo. Alfred Townsend says that in West Phifadelphia “pulpit eloquence is consids ered to be dead silence aggravated by an occasional gro&Bw The Philadelphia Telegraph reports that William B. Reed has been living in retire nient at a hotel in that city since “his re cent financial misfortune " General Cerro Gordo Williams, a* noted es-Confederate officer was married- on the 18th inst., at Mr. Sterling, Kentucky, to Mrs. Lindsey Hamilton. - LA fT^SwV Gen. The Richmond people are in high jjmka over the admission or Virginia. The ne+ gro Republicans say that if the State don’t follow out the spirit of the Reconstruction ao‘l, she will be put back as a territory. <% forgia craft, STT. HILL A J. I>. ALEXANDER* EDITORS. THOMASTON, GA, FEB. 5, 70. NOTICE. Our subscribers whose Post-office is in Thomaston will find their paper in our mail box at the Store of Suggs & Olipliant, in Cbeny k Allen’s new brick building. These gentlemen will take pleasure in delivering the paper to subscribers. THE LEGISLATURE. Although both Houses were or ganized eight or ten days ago, they have done nothing as yet, except to re-adopt the fourteenth amendment and adopt the fifteenth amendment. It may seem strange to see the re adoption of the fourteenth amend ment, but it was done because the Governor declares that all legislation since July, 1868, is a nulity. The fourteenth amendment was by reso lution of the Legislature adopted since that date, and hence the neces sity, in the opinion of the Governor, for a re-adoption. The Governor’s message was transmitted to each House on Wednesday last. There is nothing of interest or importance in the document. It is a very great display of bitterness, hate and weak ness. CONGRESS. If recent reports he true Congress has not yet concluded to let Georgia alone. Having obeyed the behest of the Governor by passing the recent Georgia bill, and becoming dissatis fied with his (the Governor’s) man agement of thing 0 , the members are seriously considering further action. It is known to be the opinion of Senators who were foremost in advo cating the late Georgia bill, that, that measure "was only intended to re-or ganize the Legislature so as to seat the expelled negroes and ‘ : oust” mem bers who were inelligible under the fourteenth amendment. They are Ljr no means satisfied with affairs down here, ana speaK ur Gen. Ruger still the Military Gov ernor, and ordering anew election for all the officers of tbe Slate from Governor down. It is generally un derstood that Congress will not per mit another election of United States Senators, but hold that Hill and Miller were properly elected. Projected Canal. —A writer in the Brunswick Appeal thinks that a canal through Fkuida, from the St. Mary’s river, Georgia, to some point on the Gulf, would create a great revolution in the carrying trade of the Gulf and Western States, and benefit not only the South, but the whole country. It is believed by many that a canal joining the waters of the St. Mary’s and Suwanee rivers could be made at comparatively little cost. Cuba. —The news is important from Cuba. General Fueller, the Spanish leader, has received a sharp defeat. Gen. Jordan, who thrashed him, has been made Commander-in- Chief of the Cuban forces in place of Quesada. The latest accounts in dicate heavy Spanish reverses. VG&m Gen. Canby has issued his order relinquishing control of civil affairs in Virginia. A good example for Gen. Terry. Woman’s Right*—Susan Anthony Tins Irrepressible Rooster of the Concern. —lt is pretty generally knewn that the ad vocates of female suffrage are divided into two hostile parties—one led by Miss An thony ml Mrs. Stanton, and the oth r by Lucy Stone and Henry Ward Beecher. The latter has been for sometime past en« gaged in the vain attempt to bold a meeting without the presence of Miss Anthony. The failure of Mr. Dick to keep King Charles the First out of his history was no less con spicuous than is the fhilure of the followers of Mr. Beecher and Mrs. Stone to keep Miss Anthony out of their conventions. They recently went to Cleveland, thinking to thus get rid of her; but no sooner had they or ganized a convention thau Miss Anthony made her appearance, brimming over with innumerable resolutions, which she per sisted in offering, until the convention dis* solved itself, to sheer self-defense. The unhappy members next fled to Boston ; but even there the redoubtable Miss Anthony turned up, in exeelent condition, with a fresh supply of xeeolutions, and with aa indomitable purpose ot monopolizing tho entire time of the- helpless convention. There is evidently no place so remote or so undesirable as to offer an asylum-whsre the anti-Anthony party can meet, with the reasonable hope of escaping from ths pres* ence of their determined oppressor. They haA better yield to the inevitable. While Mias Anthony lives she will attend any convention which they may organize, and while she has breath enough to speak she will offer resolutions inexhaustible in quan tity and interminable in length. Go it Susan.— s. r. Wovld „ Answering Argument with Mud. — No sooner does Mr. Dawes —like Mr. Wells, a man of honorable reputation, against whose integrity no one has ever before ut tered & whisper—no sooner does Mr. Dawes speak fur the people against the monopolists and jobbers, and show up waste and corruption, than instantly bis motives are also impugned, and an attempt is made r.ot to answer his statement, which these jobbers feel to be unanswerable, but to cast doubts upon his character. It will not do ; it is to* late to deceive the people by such clumsy and dishonorable means. Let the monopolists answer Mr. Wells and Mr. Dawes ; let them show these gentle men mistaken ; when they do that they will not need to call names. But they pre<? fer to call names ; and sensible people will understand why.— N. Y. Post, (Rad.) MA.RRIED At the residence of the brides father on the first of February, by the Rev.
