MEN WANTED.
“The world wants men—large hearted,
manly men ;
Men who shall join its chorus, and prolong
The psalm of labor and the psalm of love.
The times want scholars —scholars who
shall shape
The doubtful destinies of dubious years.
And land the ark, that bears our country’s
good,
Safe on some peaceful Ararat at last.
The age wants heroes —heroes who shall
dare
To struggle in the solid ranks of truth ;
To clutch the monster error by the throat;
To bear opinion to a loftier seat;
T blot the era of oppression out.
And lead a universal freedom in.
And heaven wants souls—fresh and capa
cious souls;
To taste its raptures, and expand like flow
ers,
Beneath the glory of its eentral sun.
It wants fresh souls—not lean and shrivel
led ones;
It wants fresh souls, my brother—give it
thine.
If thou indeed wilt be what scholars should;
If thou wilt be a hero, and wilt strive
To help thy fellow and exalt thyself,
Thy feet, at last, shall stand on jasper floors ;
Thy heart, at last, shall seem a thousand
hearts
Each single heart with myriad raptures
filled—
While thou shalt sit with princes and with
kings,
Rich in the jewel of a ransomed soul.”
WiR7.— Scraps of History. —The New
York World, in criticising Judge Black’s
.efence of Stanton in the Galaxy, intro
duces the followidg incident:
“Nor is it amiss to state a fact not gen
erally known, but susceptible of proof, that
when, on the trial of Wirz, Judge Ould,
the Confederate Commissioner of Exchange,
came to Washington as a witness under
subpoena to prove the facts we have stated,
Stanton sent him word that if he did not
return home at once his parole would be
determined. lie went away, and Wirz was
hung!”
To which we would add the additional
fact, not generally known, that General
Robert E, Lee and General Ilowell Cobb
were also subpoenaed and ordered to Wash
ington as witnesses for the accused, but
were subsequently met en route by dis
patches from the government order'ng them
not to come on. Gen. Cobb got as far as
Savannah, and, receiving his dispatch, turns
ed back. The prosecution had both these
gentlemen rejected as witnesses on tne
ground that, having engaged in rebellion,
they were personally infamous and not to
be believed on oath.
We may also 3tate as an interesting fact
in this connection, that Gen. Cubb, who
was in command at Macon during the year
18G4, had he been allowed to reach Washs
ington, would have testified that upon
ceipt of a vory large number of wounded
Confederates from a recent battle, more
than could be accommodated in Macon, ho
wrote to Andersonvillc to haye a quantity
of lumber that had been collected there
sent up imediately, to be used in the con
struction of temporary hospitals. Wirz ro
fused to let it go, alleging that he had been
trying long and had procured it with great
difficulty in order to shelter his prisonevs.
We had this circumstances from General.
Cobb’s own lips.
Thus it was that witnesses for the dec
fence were silenced by that blood-thirsty
court, and poor Wirz, innocent though he
was, sent to his last account. Stanton has
gone to meet him before a higher tribunal,
where no witnesses are wauted.— Savannah

llow to Get Fat. —lt is a striking fact
that most persons want to weigh more than
thov do, and measure their health by their
weight, as if man were a pig, valuable in
proportion to bis heaviness. The racer is
not fat; a good plow horse has but a mod
erate amount of flesh. Heavy men are not
those which experienced contractors employ
to build railroads and dig ditches. Thin
men, the world over, are the men for work ;
for endurance, they are wiry and bard ;
thin people live the longest; the truth is
fat is a disease, and, as proof, fat people are
never well a day at a t'me —they arc not
suited for hard work. Still, there is a me
dium between being fat as a butter-ball
and as thin and juiceless as a fence-rail.
For mere looks a moderate rotundity is
most desirable, to have enough of flesh to
cover all angularities. To accomplish this
in the shor*est time, a man should work
but little, sleep a great part of the time,
allow nothing to worry him, keen always in
a joyous, laughing mood, and live chiefly
on albuminates, such as cracked wheat, and
rye, and oats, and corn, and barley, and
sweet milk, and buttermilk, and meats.
