the opinion of the grand jury be right
cr wrong, lee ms, with you, to be a
matter of doubt, and a; all events not
deserving a leriouo mveltigarion. but
the method o{ promulgating these opi

important, ant! one or. which you dis

rather more ill nature than either.
Your conduct in ail this bears fome re
fembla.nce to the dexterity of your
friends in corig refs j on unimportant
fubi ds they were always ready with a
speech, and though they fomet lines di
verged a little from the point, aid trod
at pleasure the galleries, yet they neve*
failed to give us the motl distressing ex
amples of their eloquence* but when
the compenfaiioii law came on, the
fubjeef was to them a noli we t anger t,
the plain intention of our eonlhtution
•wze perverted, our liberties invaded,
and 10 i our orators were dent, our

two thousand dollars.
No man by being impanr.cled on a
grand jury, is ipso fadto, deprived of
any right whatever ; nothing in cur
laws, nothing in the rule l ; and practice
of our courts deprives grand jurors of
rights, which they as individuals might
lawfully exerciie. To contend for the
contrary proportion would be to for
feit every claim to rationality. Be
sides, our grand jury were supported
in their proceedings by numerous pre
cedents, and those of unquefiionable
authority ; the weli known yazoo sale
was presented by aimoft every grand
jury in the State i the late alleviating
laxc wire reprobated in like manner,
and rhe very law, of which cur grand
jury complained, was in the moll
po.ntsd terms denounced by the grant!
jury of the diltrift court of North
Carolina. Your aflVrtion that “ the
court was made the theatre of an elec
tioneering canvass,” together with
your attempt to gull the people out of
their well know'll and long cfteblifiied
rights, is a public affiont and refleftion
on the feeling and sense of the commu
nity.
With whit argument, with what
apology can our members of congress
meet the united defoliation of their
condiments ? Would it not then be
adviLble in you to be tilent, in them to
retire to their homes, until the spirit of
aritfocracy (hail have ceased to delude
them, and until the delirium of fixed
; fularies (hall have been chafed from !
j their disordered imaginations ?
I Print your paper, leave off yonr ifv ‘
i pertinence, if you please, for I am fute J
the people do not relilh it at present.
\ our attack on the grand jury may be
1 forgotten, but the conduft of your
friends in congrefi cannot be excused

thong evidence of repentance and a
thorough reformation. You and your
