The melanchoiy death of Mr Francis Chafe, jtm \ who died at Newtown, N II oh Saturday last, in the 328 year of his age, has ex cited mud) alarm among his ■ fiiends and the neighborhood. The following circumstances relative to the affecting fcencc, have bean {fat ed by the fa ni!y : About the 10’th of April last, a yearling heiffe* belonging to Mr Chafe, was seized with symptoms of hydrophobia, which wore notic ed by the father of the deceased, who advised to have her killed ; hut the opinion of others, who im put'd the disorder to poifoti, in duced them to drench the animal —but it was ineffeftuah ‘I he deceased, who aflifted, is supposed to have received the con tagion from the saliva of the ahi mil, which wet his hand that had been recently inj red. iNo id el j feet, however, wire apprehended ! unfit Mondav Jun< 3, vhich was j firft pt-i tivtd- by his tHocfance to j water, which he carefully avoided j and at tt.e naming of which, he ! would ft art lots of appetite fol lowed, but no serious alarm was 1 produced rill Friday morning, a- 1 bout 7 o’clock, when an agonizing delirium f izcd him, and it became neceffarv to confine him. khe horrors of the feene were indefcl i kable ; his vociferations resembled the bellowings of a calf and the barking of a fox, and he would cry out that he was a bead. At intervals fie was quite rational, and cautioned the people to guard a gain ft his rage, for he did not wiffi to injure them, though he feared he should. In his ucid intervals he relented his bodily fufferings b\ j the cioft affecting and fhcckhg Un- ! guage, yet observed that fits mniw enjoyed a calm submission to his fate. lie was imprefled that his disor der would terminate in death, and he fixed on the time, which was i veiified on Saturday-morning, a j bout 7 oclock. Thus, in the wild honors and excruciating pangs of hydrophobia, surrounded by aflec -1 tionate relafives, who dreaded to appioach him, fell a pro:, ifing young man, of an amiable min i, ! decent acquirements, competent property, and highly refptfib. . ; j leaving a wife aimoil petrified v !i grief, with two young child't .0 deplore their loss ; his ;n c i pa rents bowed in sorrow iits brothers and filters laddene l with the l’cene, ami a numerous , ;rJe ol frienbs ! who lamented the u timely dilfj lution of 1 ufc’ul ci f z* n. sis it is fiefjrable that fomc re medy for r ( .is diftn fling malady ! fhou'd be prescribed, it may not be improper to recommend the uie of Scullcap. agreeably to the direc tions given in the American Ma teria Medica, which, if fk Uuily ap -1 lied by a physician, may probably j ell'cd a cure. 1 lie botanical name of this plant j is (Scutelhuia Galericulata) Scullcap, II oded Willow Herb* This is a native pi .nt, and may be cafily procured, as it is ntmti found growing on the banks of li vers, on the borders of ponds, and in low’ g.ounds, flowering in the month of July or Augufl.
