THE LITTLE MAN IN GREEN- [BT PEREGRINE PARAGRAPH, ESQ.] Lives there a man 'hat lias not sceu The dapper little man iu green, With shirt superlatively clean, Cravat like snow, 11 is hat, his band kerchief, his hair, Neat to the very tip ol care;— The emerald beau ? Had 1 green envy’s fabled ink, I’d draw bis picture in a ink, So like that be should from it shrink, As from a glass : But since I’ve only common gall, Ami that not very black withal, I'll let it pass. Thou rccrenul son offathor Adam, And Eve,—that apple-eating madam. When in their fig leaf robes they clad 'era,- They fled from sight ; But thou, iu spite of all thy green Braving the gaze of men art seen In broad daylight, */ •••:* Shame on thee, man ! is it not known, Even mother Nature doll's her gown ; Wean green iu spring; in autumn, brown. In winter,—while ? Yet thou art ever green ;—In storm. Incairn, cioud.suushiue, cold aud warm, Morn, noon and night! Bethink thee ;—when old time the mower, Shall smite thee in an evil hour, And nip thy manhood iu its flower, Wilt thou be seen, 1 Clad, when the leaf of life is sere, Or when thou liest ou thy bier, In bottle-green ? COL. ETHAN ALLEN, Of the Green Mountains, was a man to strike the world as something uncommon and a high degree interesting. He was but par- ally educated and obscurely brought up—yet no man was ever more at ease in the polished ranks of life than he: not that be at all con formed to their artificial rules and little eti quette, but that he observed the dictates of natural good sense and good humor. His bearing was in total defiance of fashion, and he looked and acted as if lie thought it would bo a condescension thus to trammel himself. It is well known that early in life in his own lew;” “and these are but little read” was the answer. “How then” asked the King,” do the common people know anv tiling of those grievances of which they complain, and of which we have just boon speaking. “As to that” said he “I ran tell your Majesty, that amongst a people who have felt tho spirit of Liberty, the news of oppression is carried by the birds of the air and tlie breezes of Heaven.” “That is too figurative an answer from a mat ter of fact man to a plain question, rejoined Iho King.” “Well to be plain, answered tho re bellious subject, amongst our people the tale of their wrongs is carried from man to man and from neighborhood to neighborhood with the speed of electricity, my countrymen feel no thing else and talk of nothing else, out of n- bundance of the heart ihe mouth spenk:n"g.”-rr I will add with great respect to your Majesty, that such a people cannot be put down with the sword.” The King made a long pause as if strongly impressed with the truth of these re marks; at lengih changing the subject, ho asked Cel. Allen if he knew Dr. Franklin; and being answered in the affirmative he en quired concerning his experiments with elec tricity—and expressed a curiosly to experi ence an electric shock. The British sovereign seemed to take pleasure in the conversation which lie kept for morP than an hour, and at length, made Col. Allen promise to visit him with his countryman Dr. Franklin, at his pal ace in London.—Some weeks after this, lie was reminded of his promise by the nobh-niai: above mentioned, and an hour was fixed for the homebred Philosopher of America to ex plain the mysteries of a new discovery in sci ence to the Royal Family. They a;tended accordingly, and with ar,apparatus chiefly of his own invention, Dr. Franklin exhibited ma ny of flu -c simple and amusiug experiments for which he was so noted, and at which, tlie royal children, even those of larger growth, were much delighted. In this playful way, Dr. Franklin took oc casion to convey instruction as to tlie proper ties of this astonishing fluid. \Yhilc the Royal habitation whs thus in a most uukingly uproar, t he Prt n.ier was announced as in waiting. The King seemed for a moment disturbed. “1 forget my appointment with the Minister” said lie “hut no matter, I will eschew business j for once and let North see how we arc ent- | ployed. Accordingly the Minister was usher- j ed in with little ceremony, and it was soon i concluded that he should have a shock. Al- 1 len whispered to the Doctor to remember, how : he had shocked us across the waters, and to ! give hint a double charge;” whether it was \ designed on the hint of his friend or not, was ! not ascertained, but the charge was so power- j.fnl on the nerves of his Lordship, as to make him give way in the knees, at which the company, and especially the Princesses, were almost convulsed with mirth. Some of Col. Allen’s happy retorts at the clubs and fashionable parties are still remem bered aud often repeated. Ou one occasion ho was challenged to a glass of wine by the beautiful Duchess of Rutland who seems to have particularly been pleased with his inde pendent manner, ‘and you must qualify your ghss with a toast,’ observed the lady. The “Yarmonter” very unaflectediy observed, that he was not used to that sort of ceremony, and was afraid he might give offence. If howev er, the lady would be so good as to suggest a- subject, he would endeavor to give a sentl~ ment. 'Oh said she, never mind as to the. sub ject, any thing will do, so that it has no treason it.” “Well says he, this may do as a truth if.not for a toast, and fixing his eyes adoringly «*•„ the far famed court beauty; he proceeded, ‘If any thing could make a double traitor out of a good patriot, it v ould be the witchcraft of such eyes as your L .. ship’s.” The blunt sincerity with w .ici. this was spo ken together with its exact fitness to the occa sion and tfie m-rson, caused it to be long hailed in tho beau monde as an excellent good tiling, and although it had the effect ofheigliteningfor a moment that beauty to which it was offered as a tribute, it is said the fair Duchess often af terwards boasted of the compliment as far be fore ali the empty homage she bad received from the glitering coxcombry of the city. A lady once sneeringly- asked Col. Allen in country lie acquired an influence over his fed- \ 4 large Assembly at what time fashionable fa- low men, and led them on to some of; the dies in America preferred taking the air. He most daring achievements. He seems to have i perceivedherdriftand blunflya.nswered “when- possessed all the elements of a H' ro—a devo- ! ever it was necessary to feed ■ their geese and ted patriotism, a resolute and daring mind,! turkies.” ‘What’ enquired me lady, “do tlie and an excellent judgment.
