FROM THE SOUTHERN PLANTER.
Having for some years turned my atl otioa t >
the most economical &. profitable mode of fallen
ing cattle, ana csnecially hogs, 1 have found that
preparing their food by the pr< cess of boiling, i.
unquestionably the greatest improvement that
has yet tiecu discovered,—a slight fermentation
follow ing, priri iour.ly to feeding it away, as ccr
luiuly adds to the capacity of food for affordu’
nutrition. But 1 have also farther fully as. .r
taiaed ili.it the nutritive qualities of many spec; :
of food can only be obtained by boiling, an i ..
many others is only fully developed, or prepare
for the action of the stomach by that process.
The Irish Potato furnishes a case in point
the first kind, and the apple of the last. It i® .
lremely rare that yon will find a hog that will < t
a raw Irish potato, but put it through a culir.r .
process aud it is as rare to Cud ouc that will refuso t
them-
Boil the apple, let them get cold atul feed them
to hogs, aud you double their capaciiy for produ

But sir, the result of fairly conducted .experi

of different kinds-of food, adds prodigiously to tho
capacity of the different materials foi affnr.liug
nutrition, from 0'e effect of combination. The
increase of the quantity of food, as w—li as the
addition to its nutritive quality, by tile simple ab

to all well-informed persons. But 1 am
that the combination of different material.,, pro
duces a greater mass cf nutritive matter that, tin
whole could separately yield; ami that to laid
oat the art of mixing food, along with the best
mode of p r cparing it for the action of the stom
ach, is the great artof feeding rcm.ohiicr.lly, and.
1 believe, to secure uitimai flesh, health and \ igor.
The well-known'effect of b.ciliug cotton s>u!

beef cattle, exhibits a conclusive proof ot lie last
position, I think—no preparation is known t.i fat
more rapidly : tbe I ttc improved mode ot keep
ing up in flesh, workirg horses in England, by
the admixture of fowl, wav he cited as a corrobo
rating proof in point. It is low I think, render
ed certain that the combinatk.uof two articles of'
food, produces a tew nutritive matter, more ef
fectual than either could separately, or, than
could or, [.reduced from the uutritivc matter con
tained in each, fed separately. Boil Irish pota
toes, pumpkins, and apples; combine them by
mashing together, and add a little salt aud it
will be found a most nutritive food for bogs, pro

. The result with n:s lias become an noxious de
sire to ascertain the simplest, and most economi
cal mode of steam boiling food ou a large scale,
say pumpkins, potatoes, ecc. Some ol ytmrrea

plan, not generally known, aud valuable.
I have uu hesitation iu saying that the individ
ual w host talents would devise some plau which
would come within the rcaih of cvciy descrip
tion of planters, uniting economy iu the expend
iture of capital, with despatch, would confer a
solid benefit on the country.

A simple Barometer.—Take a common
phial ana viit off the rim and part ol the neck.
This may be cbme by u piece of w hip-cord,
twisted round it, and pulled to and fro quick
ly in a sawing position by two persons ; one of
whom holds the phial firmly in his left hand.
Heated ia a few minutes by the string, and titeu
dipped suddenly into cold water, the bottio
will be decapitated more easily than by any
other means. Lot the phial be now filled
with common pump water, and applying the
finger to its mouth, turn it quickly upside down:
on removing the finger a will fie ‘bund teat on
ly a few drops will escape. W ithout Cork, or
stopper of any kind, the water will be retain
ed within the bottle by the pressure of the ex
ternal air; the weight of air without the phial
being greater than that of the small quantify
of water within it. Now let a bit of tape be
tide round tiie middle of the phial, to which the
two ends may he attached, so as to form a *oop
to hung on a nail, let it Le tlms suspended, iu
a perpendicular manner, with the mouth down
wards; and this is the Barometer. When the
weather is clear aud inclined to be so the wa
ter will be level with the section of the neck,
or rather elevated above it, and forming a con
cave surface. When disposed to he wet, a
drop will appear at the mouth which will en
large till it falls, and then another drop while
the humidity of the atmosphere continues.
