wanted, send to the nearest place .whore they
can bo obtained, sometim es a iiundred miles to
get cheated with yankee seed 1 war ranted fresh,'
and all ibis sort o’ thing. Well, we plant them.
Somo kinds do tolerably well. About half ne
ver come up, and what does germinate is not
recognized by the experienced gardener as
, what it is warranted to be. However, say we,
the loss isn’t much ; we’ll packet it and do the
same tiling next year.
Happening io be just enough of a y ankee
myself to know some ol their tricks upon,
’strangers,’ I’ll'tell you how. they serve us, aii(K
doubtless laugh in their sleeve at their success.
They send out large quantities ot seeds to our
druggists, allow them 25 and sometimes 50 per
tent, commission, for selling, and at the close
of the year, what remains on hand they take
back, mix them un with good seed and send
them to us again. This is neither joke nor
rhyme, but a fact, about which there is no
mistake ; and as this is a free country, both
parties have a right to ‘go ahead’ whether the
seed will or not. For my own part, I mean
to quit it.. I don’t like work well enough to
sow where .1 cannot reap, or plant where I
cannot gather. '
Having frequently noticed what uncommon
fine vegetables they have in the Charleston
market, curiosity led me to inquire t.’ie cause ;
when a member of their Horticultural Socie
ty accounted for it by saying they used either
English seed, or tho product of it of their oten
saving. In future I shall try their plan.
This article is rather out of my line; hut
having about a fortnight since, devoted great
attention to the preparation of and sowing two
acres in turnips, viz. eighty odd loads well-rot
ted manure, ploughed in, harrowed, hand rak*

MANAGEMENT OF LIGHT SOILS.
In a former communication I treated of the
management ol clay soils, and in this I shall
confine my remarks chiefly to those of which
sand aud gravel arc the principal component
parts..
The best soils arc generally of a dark color,
with a due proportion of sand, calcareous earth
and clay ; and it is the busiuess of the farmer,
and happily in his power by judicious man
agement to preserve its fertility, or if either of

In the management of clay soils, the great
object should be to render them more friable :
but in the treatment of soils not sufficiently ad
hesive the efforts of the farmer should be di
rected to renderiag them more so. This is
to be attained by the application of clav, tnari,.
lcachcd ashes or swamp mud, and by plough
ing when the ground is wet.
It is often found that sandy soils rest on
clay, so near the surface that deep ploughing
will bring up some of it. Where this is (her
case, the fanner may gain two benefits by oner
operation. Two inches of clay turned up and
mixed with the surface soil, will be equal to a

the roots of plants to search for food. If how
