.• A day or two after the attempted assassination
of the President, the lion. Joel K. Mann men
tioned to some members of Congress, that a gen- -
tleinau who boarded iu the same house, informed
him, that .Mr. Poindexter had interviews with
Lawrence, but a few days beforo-thc attempt uji
the President's life. ”.'bis information produced
considerable sensation. A Captainofliigh stand
ing in the navy had'previonsly stated in this city
that Mr. Poindexter, on his voyage from New
Orleans, had threatened to demand satisfaction
for the remark made about him by the President,
as reported in an anonymous letter to the Balti-
morcPatriot. saying if the President refused, that
lie would shoot him wherever he saw him. This
threat of Poindexter’s was vouched upon such
[ authority as to give considerable uneasiness to
several of' ihe President's fricuds, and among
others, to the Rev. Mr. Hatch, Chaplain to the
Senate, u ho called on the President to (ml him
on his guard against Poindexter. .Mr. Ward,
another gentleman of the navy, who had probihly
heard of these threats, was at .Mi. Stow; art’s, (a
respectable mechanic of this city, whose business
brought him into an acquaintance with Law
rence.) on the Siiuday after the attempt of Law
rence, and. Mr. Stewart mentioned to Jiiin the
circumstance of seeing Lawreuce iu conversa
tion with Poindexter on the Tuesday preceding
the event, which happened on Friday. !iMi.
Ward mentioned it to the Hop. Joel K. Mann,
arid from the interest taken in it by several to
whom ho mentioned it, Mr. Ward was induced
to call on Mr. Stewart to he sure that he had
not misunderstood Inin. .Mr. Stcivart assured
him that w hat be bad told him was true, arid h',‘-
though he expressed some apprehension that tbc
publicity of his. having made the statement might'
affect- his business injuriously, yet declared his
willingness to make oath to i». He was-advised
to do so by several of his friends. We have Ifequ
informed, tbit Duff Green aud Senator Ewing v
both called upon him, and endeavored to induyo
him not to promulgate tho fact. Hi-, however,
felt it due to those who had repented the cirenm
stances, on'Ids authority, to give the statement
a definite and nuthcotic shape, and he volunta
rily inade atid sebt the affidavit given to tliv Pre
sident. . ... . ■ ;
Mr. Foy had, also, immediately after the event
;.t the Capitol, mentioned to some of . his ae-
qu lintunccs. that ho had seen Lawrence go re-
pentediy to Poindextor’s residence; and wc'uri-
dcrsiaud, under the advice of Mr. Goltman, (a
member of ibe City Council.) gave tho fact the
form of an affidavit, and had it delivered to tho
President ns t ho person most iuteres'cii m the evi

These circumstances, which were known ti>

President to see -the depositrons, and they were
shown to all who desired to see them.) found
