THE LAST JOURNEY.
Michaud,'in his description of an Egyptian fu
neral procession, which lie met on its way to tile'
cemetery of Rosetta, says—“ the procession we
saw pas*! stopped before certain ileuses, and
sometimes receded a few steps. I .vas mid that the
dead stopped thus before the door of their friends,
m lake their last farewell, and before those of
then enemies, to effect a reconciliation before
they parted forever.” [Correspondence d'Orient

Slowly, with measured tread,-
Onward we hear the dead
To his long home.
Short grows the homwnrd road,
On with your mortal load.
Oh! Grave, we come ;
Yet, yet—ah! hasten not,
Past each remembered spot
Where he had been.
Where late he walked iu gleo
There from henceforth to ho
Never more secu.
Yet, yet—oh slowly move—
Bear uot the form we love
Fast from our sight.
Let the air breath on him.
And the sun beam ou him
J.ast looks of light.
Rest yc—set down the bier.
One he loved dwcllotb here
Let the dead lie.
A moment that door beside,
Wont to fly open wide
Ere he drew nigh.
Hearken!—hespeaketh yet,
“Oh. friend ! wilt thou forget
(Friend more than brother!)!
How hand iu hand we’ve gone,
Heart iu heart linked in one—
All to each other ?
“Oh friend ! I go from' thee.
Where the worm feasleth free.
Darkly to dwell.
Giv’si thou no parting kiss ?
Friend ! is’it come to this ?
Oh, friend, farewell!”
Uplift your load again,
Take up the mourning strain
Pour the deep wail!
l,o!,the unexpected one
’lo his place passethon— >
Grave ! hid him hail.
Yet, yet,—ah—slowjy move i
Bear uot the form we love.
Far from our sight—
Let the air breath on him,
And the suu beam ou hint
. Last looks of light.
Here dwells his mortal foe ;
Lay the departed low,
Even at his gate.
Will the dead speak again.
Uttering proud boasts iu vain
Last wards of hate ?
Lo! the cold lips unclose—
List! list! what souud9 are those,
Plaintive and slow ?
“Oh thou, mine euemy!
Come forth aud look on me,
Ere hence I go.
Curse not thy foeman now,—
Mark ou his palled brow.
Whose seal is set!
Pardouiug 1 passed away—
Then—wage uot war with clay—
Pardon—foi get.”
Now his last labor’s done !
Now, the goal is won!
Oh, Grave ! we come.
Seal up this precious dust—
Laud of the good aud just,
Take the soul home!

he will advise the rejection of a treaty so liberal

Be careful what you say to Printers.—Not
long since a promising cilizen. on familiar terms
with the printer, on opening his morning paper,
read to his utter astonishment, his own name in
the following connection. '
• Died at his residence in this towti yesterday,
Mr. “-aged—, a promising' cifizen, much la

Not being fully convinced of the truth of tho
statement, with all speed he repaired to iheoflice
to ascertain the author ot tiie deadly libel. What!
you here,” says Typo. ‘Did you not say that if
you lived you would fulfil your promise last night?
You must he in error, sir—if xou are a man of
your word, you must have died—go home, sir,
for decepcv’s sake go home and he buried.”
The mao was reminded of his remissness,
and we never heard that lie ever after forgot
his promise to the nrintar. He was belter
pleased with the joke when he learnt the death
was only inserted in the copy which was sent
him.
