statements of tire proprietors ofthe Mail Line, and to
assure them and the public, that we shall continue to
run, for the next four years at least, two Lines of Troy
Coaches from Augusta south, one to Columbus anil
the other to Mobile, presirring an unbroken connection
between Augusta and Mobile. If at the last letting, we
could have obtained the contract for carrying the Mail
between Augusta and Cvltunbus for a fair compeusa
tion, we should have been glad to have succeeded.
But to consent to transport the Mail dad}’ in four-horse
post Coaches, front Augusta to Columbus, a distance
of220 miles, for the yearly compensation of 10,400
dollars, is what we did not suppose any man or set of
men at all acquainted with the weight and size of the
Mails, would have undertaken .to do. But it seems
that we erred in this supposition, and that Messrs.
Longstreet, Guedron & Co. (although riullifiers) were
patriotic enough to become the carriers of Uncle Sam’s
“Pocket Book” for this sum of 10.400 dollars, and we
very much mistake if, before this- year rolls round, the
proprietors of the Mail Line, valuable as tliey consider
••this Book,” and solicitous as they are that “travellers
North and West should come and assist them in guar
ding it,” do not regret that a little of this attention and
sympathy had not been bestowed upon their own Pock
et Book, its safety and guardianship, although its re
sources may lie the inexhaustible funds of the Patriotic
Bank of Washington City, for even that may be again
compelled to suspend specie payment.
We are censured by Longstreet, Guedron & Co.
for not yielding peaceably to tltetn, the.entire cpntrol of
the road.; and. some few important personages have en
deavored to throw such obstacles in our way as would
compel ns to haul off. So far as the public" are affect
ed by onr refusal to quit the road, they have been de
cidedly benciitted. The facilities for truvellin" have.
been increased—the expenses reduced,—and if there so „,
be any merit attached to this, we are entitled to it, for
tre reduced the fare and compelled them to follow.
