undoubtedly have .spread to Seyle’s contiguous

the fire was terminated by the intervention of the
Beef market, tho cupola of which took fire aud
w as much iujured, and the roof of the. eastern
wing of which also took fire, and was "almost en
tirely destroyed. This is the fourth o e:;t;oti on
which our Market lias sustained damage, within
little more than two yers—the fire of the winter
of 1833 consumed ;; iarge portion of it—it took
fire but was injuicd very slighlv during the con

suffered from a like, casually—at:d last summer;,
a portion of the Vegetable Market now re-build

The number of buildings destroyed in this v. ido

of the sufferers.were uninsured, and many of
them such as were the least able to bear ststh los

this c-Elamuity, to, utter or copiparative poverty,

path, when our paper for that morning was put to
press. The fire commenced about half past 12
o’clock, on Friday night, and continued to rage
for the space of nine hours, before its fearful pro
gress was finally arrested. The building in
which il commenced, was a small wooden tene
ment. or shoo, on the west side of Meeting-street,
used by Mr. Shephard as a Satilery, and as it was
only occupied in tho day time, and no light tvss j

Market and Haseil streets respectively, on the
south and north Meeting street on the west, and
Maiden Lane and Anson street, on tho east—with
the solitary exception of the brick dwelling house,
