Had thefirc cotnipnnic.ated to the building, it would undoubtedly have .spread to Seyle’s contiguous suite of Public Rooms, -and have passed on to thd west, and wrapped the business part of King st. in ilames. Onthe opposite side of Mfetifig street the fire was terminated by the intervention of the Beef market, tho cupola of which took fire aud w as much iujured, and the roof of the. eastern wing of which also took fire, and was "almost en tirely destroyed. This is the fourth o e:;t;oti on which our Market lias sustained damage, within little more than two yers—the fire of the winter of 1833 consumed ;; iarge portion of it—it took fire but was injuicd very slighlv during the con flagration in February last, and here again it has suffered from a like, casually—at:d last summer;, a portion of the Vegetable Market now re-build ing. was blown down by a storm. The number of buildings destroyed in this v. ido spread conflagration, is estimated at from 3 to 400 some, of them largo brick mansions, but much tho larger proportion of llio.ai t\v- st< ry houses. Only a small portion of the buildings 11 n- sutned, as conipnrcd with tho win iivwi re\ occu pied ns stores—the loss of goods c-r merchandize is, therefore, probably not very great in propor tion lo the extent of the fire, hut loss of furni ture must be very considerable. We have heard of several thriving ci izeiis and mechanics—thriving onthe hard earning* of their or u industry—who have been reduced by this c-Elamuity, to, utter or copiparative poverty, and 'a great number of persous have been render- ad by it homeless and houseless, anti theirtiitua- jiqn issuch as to demand the sympathy of :hc feeling heart, and prompt relief (rum the benevo lent aud liberal purser It is perhaps, the inosi ca lamitous fire that ii::* e' er ravaged and dostilated city, that of Kv. 1819. in which 194 dwellings our were destroyed may have equalled it in ti: • ex tent of ground. but ilu prcM i:! ca'amnity has fallen upon a large'portion of thus; in moderate • 11- dy circumstances; and the portion of the c which has bee" subjected to thisfea lul vi-iiai;- having been inter ected by numerous streets! ai a crowded with both habiiations ami inhabitants, the loss and sufi’eriug are therefore very arcat ii; proportion to the space cov; red by t!u- fire.
