It proved to be the mast of n ship that must have been completely wreck ed ; for there were the remains of handkerchiefs, by which some of the crew had fastened them selves to the spar, to prevent their being washed off by the waves. The wreck had evidently been "drifting about for many mon'Jis; clusters of shell fi.-h had fastened about it. and long sea weeds flaunted ?il its sides. But where, thought I, is the crew ? Their struggle has long been li ver, they have gone down timid the ;oar of the tempest,—their hoaes iie whitening among the caverns of the deep. All that shall ever lie known ; of that ship is, that she sailed from port, and xv never heard of more.’’—JVasliington Irving. The melancholy winter day Across the darkening ocean spray It£ parting glimmer cast ; And by that dim and dreary ray. Amid "the hollows of the waves That yawned around our path like graves, I saw a blackened mast.' The green sea weed around it hung, Tho rough sea shell against it clung ; And at its tapering end A soiled atid tattered flag u as hung ! As the wild breeze mound me grievH}, My heart with sadness filled: I wept to think ol till the sighs That once above that deck did rise. The groans, the loud heart-rending cries That would a fiend have thrilled ! The famine and the parching thirst, Tim prayer in vain for one poor crust, That one poor drop of rain might hurst From heaven’s exhaustless store - : I thought of the fierce eye of death. The rattling throat, the gasping breath, The corse when all was o’er! The agony, the pain of heart Of him. the latest to depart, Alone upon the sea,— rittll tossed upon his rolling bier, Amt praying that his God would hear. And set his spirit free ! Ah! fatal ship! How fair the gale Did murmur in thy spreading sail, When thou didst part from home ! How l-right did shine the morning ray Upon thy s mely decks that day, When thousands lined the green-shored bay To see thee cleave the foam, Fair hands, perchance, did wave farewell; Fond hearts lor parting friends did swell, That little dreamed 'he parting bell Would never o’er them sound. Nor prayer he said above their hones, Nor o’er them placed the church yard stones, In consecrated ground ; But the dark n inpests of tbe deep For ages o’er their names would sweep. j AIRIN', June 17.—Death from the bite of a j Snake.—We are informed that a few days since, I a daughter of Mr. George \Y . Norven, who lives I upon Edtsto River, about 20 miles from this j place, was bitten on the wrist by a very largo ! Rattlesnake which caused her death in a few I hours. ?he was on her way to school, and tho i children who were in company with her at the j time, sav that she had stopped with them to pick blackberries growing by the road side, when be ing thus engaged hut for a few mirutes, she scr eamed out that a snake had hit her : she was al most immediately taken home by her agonising parents, and an express.sent for a physician, but before he could arrive, tho unfortunate little suf ferer expired. - Things I like hugely!—A ride in a stage jammed up between five old maids and five old bachelors—the former takiug snuff and the latter- smoking or chewing—the air is so aromatic. To wear a new hat out in tho rain---xxhen one has loaned his umbrella. To hear a Saw filing, when one has the tooth ache.
