April 29 45. A T this tune, when the spirit of speculation in laud, ia. i? prevailing to an extent unprecedented in out- country, aliow me to endeavor to direct public opin ion from objects at a distance—contingent and doubt ful iu result, to those nearer home, which, from every facility of information afford assurances, that at Ignat, possess some advantages to those who have their mon ey to expend in adventures, that of certainty. I will say nothing in relation to patriotic consideration, which should at least, so far influence our citizens ..s to in duce them not to desert the land of their birth or adop tion, unless, advantages of a superior character bo held out to them ; but, I will address myself to their interest alone. It is now two years since I passed through that part of Georgia, bordering on Flint river, when I was induced to inquire of the few scattered settlers l occasionally met, respecting the qualities of lands and the prospect of health. Being fa vorably impressed with the country, I spent some time in ni-king a personal examination as to »he extent of the rich lands, the advantages the country possessed in regard to water courses, the chance of erecting mills, and what might be ultimately anticipated from the na tural advantages when they should be fairly developed and appreciated, and I must say, my expectations were more thau fully realized. I immediately made some purchases in Leo county on cither side the Flint river, about four miles abovo a place called i'hu’ertown.— Being convinced that this was the most eligible site for a commercial town, aud one that mast possess ad vantages over any other place on this river. It lias a central location to a large body of rich land. The site selected, is a beautiful eminence of pine land, and has a bold bluff upon the river. It is immediately upon the post road from Augusta nnd the up country- to Florida. It will also have a State road psssing thro’ it from Columbus to St. Marys, besides the numerous that will he made from this ferry to com municate with different parts oftlie country. The counties of Lee, Sumter, and Baker, aro on Flint river, and abound in the most fertile lands that are best adapted to the culture of cotton and corn. The face of the country is level, the ricli land* lying on or in the vicinity of water courses which are al undant & never failing : the timber is alternately oak, hickory, and pine, while the first is always upon strong land- much of the pine land also, will rate with the best in Georgia, in regard to the river, a? far as my knowledge extends, it is not surpassed for the purpose of naviga tion hy scarce any in the Slate with a small expendi ture to remove some temporary obstacles, which thro' the wisdom ofour Legislature, must soon be effected. The contemplated railroad, for which Thomas 8pal- dii._- i sq. baa a charter, communicating with Flint & Ocmulgee rivers, will greatly benefit this section of J country. Il will perfect an inland communication from the Atlantic cities to those oftlie Gulf of Mexico ; ; a work much needed, both from its commercial advan tages and that of government. This rail road has its j termination on Flint river, at the point before alluded to fora town site. I have entered into bonds with Mr. Spalding, to that effect, that the town will be laid out during the present season, and the lots offered for sale j »? announced in advertisement j From close observation, I discover, that those who mil ! are temperate in their habits, enjoy as full a share of ! health, as in any other part of the country in the same latitude. The society is gradually improving, and I think such inducements are held out. bo h by present | and future prospects as to authorise an investment which will certainly yield a large percent.
