Miss Martha AVilsox. Oa Wednesday morning last, this young lady daughter of Mr. Lurn Winso* of Effingham County with her mother and brother attended our market; on their return home the same day, (at night,) ahouf 14 miles from this city they cam ped out; a fire was kindled, and by it a bed or a place to rest upon, was pul uear the fire—the clothiug of which, after some -short'tiinc, was discovered to be on fire, together with the dress of the young lady, who immediately jumped, up. Her mother and brother heiug near by, hastened to her aid; and attempted to tear the clothing ir i n h r—in which attempt the hands of Mr. Wilson were severely burnt. While iu this art. Miss Wilson being wrapped in flames, extricated herslf from her brother and ran off. and before ho could reach her she was ii'cmliy burnt to death. That from and after the passage of this act. all free persons of color within this State, who shall har bour, conceal or entertain a slave or slaves, who shall be charged or accused of any criminal matter, or shall be a runaway, shall, upon conviction (in addition to tho penalty already provided for iu said section) be subject to the same punishment as slaves are under said section of the above recited act.
