But the Tcxians are ■tot to be lulled into li ueglecl of their duties and abandonment of their vigilance. Suspicions be ing thus excited, inquiries were instituted and au advantitious nid, or rather a principal ageut in the discovery made his appearance in the person of ** •*•*. who came forward to give notice of the plot and to produce in confirmation of hi:, evidence a document, in Spanish, written and sigued by Don Francisco Pizarto Martinez, Mexican consul at New Orleans, to the following purport, “ That inasmuch as it is welt kttowu to him (tho cousa!) that Don Bartolome p ages, a native of Catalonia, whose signature appears in tbe margin, is charg ed with a secret mission of the highest importance for the fulfilment of which it is indispensably ne cessary that he should freely enter and leave the ports of Texas, which by law are closed to foreign trade, therefore the commauders of Mexican ves sels or privateers, to whom he, Pages, may exhi bit the document, are requested aud supplicated nor to throw impediments or obstacles in tho way of his voyage to Brazoria, on tbe Am^ric-.i! schr. Given at New Orleans, the 29th day of July, 1836, and sealed will: tho seal of this Consulate- Fran. Pizarp.o Martinez.” Such in substance are the contents of tho pas- port. Upon this evidence, joined to the suspi cious circumstances'’ before meul:oned, W. H. Pattou, captain of the guard over Sauta Ana, proceeded to take measures for securing the par ties in tho transaction, and accordingly, came to the landing ou the 16th, where he seized in the name of the Republic of Texas, ihe vessel, placed the crew and other individuals under arrest, searched ttteir persons, without however finding then any papers ol importance, aud finally, he cptifiued the principal ageut in idle plot. Don Bartholome Pages, and one of the crew, a native Spaniard—both of them were put iu irons, in which situation they still remain. The vessel and, cargo are now under examination, and we will 'publish the result when known. But further testimony will be forthcoming from the source alluded to, showing that the plan of escapo was forme-’when Pages left Velasco for N. Orleans, and it is inferred that others were to assist, for ramifications have been discovered including sev eral subaltern agents. Suspicious are entertained that the vessel has Mexican owners—with her car go, she cost iu New Orleaus $4500. Extraor dinary m< asures of precaution have been taken with the prisoners, and Santa Ana and Almonte have been put in irons; free communication with them is also interdicted.* In the flight of the dis tinguished prisoner, a nations harvest would have been blighted. * The captive President made an effort to des troy himself, by taking a larger c«3e of opium, which produced, however, only tiaurca. 63 A splendid Four Wheeled Carriage, J UST landed, and for sale by CRAFT & LEWIS.
