Van Bttren’s enemies now, were hi* warmest sup- j |j es except four viz. Floyd, Lowndes, Rahurne,
purlers four years ago; that, (according to their own
showing,) notiiitig has been done by hitn since, to for
feit that support; but that the whole ground of their
present opposition is for acts of his long previous to
■hat time—the presumption is irresistible, that their
support then w is mercenary, and their hostility now
rtrengeful; that they vere actuated then, merely by
the hope of reward; and now by revenge for neglec
ted services! The taunt continually thrown out at the
friends of the Administration as being the “spoils par
ty,” shows that tlie idea of ‘spoils’ is constantly before
their minds. One of the corrupt scribblers for the
.Messenger unconsciously admits as much—when he
speaks of “letting his children see when he is dead
and gone, how richly the Van Burenite.s rewarded him
in 1831, for his labors iu the cause of southern in-ti-
t it.u:is. m l li i-v 11 ircifully the comp issiouate'boweics j

nant sentence speaks more than was intended: it re
veals that he writer was not rewarded as he expected
to be in 1831; and that Van Boren then was oil the
side of southern institutions. This is a precious con
fession ; and not the less true, for its being forced out
by the pains of the rack! True the Van Buren or Ad"
laiiiistrat'nii party did not reward every one that hur
rah'd in 1831 and ’321 It not ouly did not 'richly re
ward’ them with honors nnd emoluments as they ex
pected; but it openly condemned certain of their
movements—particularly those in regard to Nullifica
tion ! On this subject they were distinctly informed,
that the only ‘rewards’ they might expect, were such
as were bestowed upon the enemies to the country.

If the statement of the whigs cau be relied on,
and General Harrison actually gets the votes of

this subject, which it says originated in the Van Buren

public records cannot be set aside by a bare denial.—
