MiUtdgetUU, Dee. 24tA, 1836.
Gentlemen : I have received'your note of yester
day’s dale, informing me that I have been unanimous
ly nominated, by tiie Union members of the Legisla
ture, ns the candidate of the Union party for the office
of Governor at the next election, and requesting me to
signify my acceptance or non-acceptance of such no
mination.
This renewed evidence of the confidence of my fel
low citizens, who have so often honored me with the
highest offices witmn their gift, excites in my bosom e-
inulions of gratitude which t have not the power ade
quately to express. Tiie high and responsible office I
have now tlic honor to hold, and for which I am desir
ed again to be die candidate, was conferred upon me
by the Union party; and f have at all times been ready
to. urrendvr it, when a majority of my political friends
shall he dissatisfied with my conduct; believing that no
mail ol high and Honorable feelings will preside over
a free people longer than he can do so with their ap
probation anu consent.
1 r joiee that harmony and good feeling characteri
zed your m.ietiug, and that all minor considerations, of
a personal nature, were merged in the noble and patri
otic determination to support aur party; upon the exis
tence and success of which depend the m lintainance
of those principles which we believe will, alone, pre
serve fi,e and happy govern ent.
The doctrines ot the Union party are to be found in
the con-ututions established by tiie patriots of the Re
volution—m die writings of Jefferson. Madison, and
Jack-on; and, above all, in the farewell address of the
Father of his country, George Washington. These,
«nd these only, can preserve our beloved country from
anarchy and*despotism, and render the people happy
anil prosperous. And whilst political virtue and love
of free institutions abide in the laud. “ Union men”
will cling “ to the great saving principles of die Union
party. ’ aud thereby maintain ti e liberty of tiie States
and the union of the States.
M itli a lively sense of the many obligations under
which I have been placed by the kindness and confi
dence of my political friends, and particularly by the
unanimous nomination as their candidate for the office
of Chief Magistrate of the State, after they have, for
more tie.’, twelve months observed my conduct in the
di-ciiargo of the duties of tliat arduous and responsible
station, i accept the nomination, ui d pledge myself to
sustain, n - iar as 1 can, the principles of liberty and
union, ani the best interests of ray fellow citizens. *
Be pleased. Gentlemen, to accent my thanks lor the
kind aid ourtesii* manner in which you have con
veyed to ine die wishes of our friends, and believe me
to be, very respectfully,
Your obedient servant,
WILLIAM SCHLEY.

Mr. Printer—Learning from common report, that
there will be an opposition ticket offered to the good
citizens for their suffrage*, op Monday next for seats
at the honorable board of city council, prnv let me
through the medium of your paper, enquire from the
good'people tiie object to be attained by removing the
present board who are again candidates. They certain
ly have got our city into a dilemma of debt, and in all
conscience let them have au opportunity of getting it
out, and making affairs somewhat straight. And iti
tire present posture of affairs, of a heavy debt hanging
over the city, principally discounted by our city Bank
through versoned influence, and which has been thus re
newed from time to time, the office is no very envia
ble situation.
It is certainly commendable to see our citizens wil
ling to take part in tiie councils, and each to pierce his
quota for the public weal, but I hope the people will
generally come forward and vote for the ofrf members.
’J h -y have donethe.r duty as such for tht£ welfare of
the city, and it is no more than justice to them that
they be allowed to remain, to complete and fiuisli tiie
ends which arc now in operation, and no new mem
ber, or au entire new board can better effect it than the
gentlemen now composing the board. I will venture
to say that there is not an Alderman now at the board,
or even his libnor, the Mayor, blit would prefer declin
ing a re-election, were they not instigated - to continue
in office from having made personal pledges to obtain
loans for'the city which they wish and /eel bound to
see liquidated. And whieh would have been done had
not uiiforseen events prevented ere their year expired,
and they then would cheerfully have resigned their
seat* to other aspirants after unthankful and unprofi
table offices. AN OLD CITIZEN.
