Stave Robbery vf a large sum.—Tlie I.ynchbnrg and
Richmond stage, gays the Richmond Whig of tlie 23d
tilt, was robbed at3o’clock on Wednesrfov night, in
the suburbs of Manchester, of-the sum of ONE HUN
DRED AND TWENTY-SIX THOUSAND DOL-
I-ARS, seventy thousand, tlie property, of the Bank
of Virginia, fifty-six tlsiusaed of tlie Fanners’ Bank
of Virginia. 'I’he two Banks bad despatched this sum
,to thyir branches in Lynchburg, by a passenger in the
stage, whose trunk was cut off, as were all the trunks.
It m stated that of all the trunks, when tlie alarm - was
given, and the gpot where the robbery was committed
reached, that containing tlie money ’ wa* alone not to
be found—which implies a previous knowledge on the
part of the highwayman;
All foe notes are on fob two branches of die Virgin
ia-and Farmers Batiks at Lynchburg. The-Banks
have-offered a reward of tire thousand dollars for the
recovery df tlie property, We have little doubt that
it will be recovered and the robber brought to justice.
Shocking Accident.•—While firing the salute on Wed
nesday, [in honor of the return of Gov Call from the
seat of war,] foe- gnu exploded while the gunner*
were ramming dowir the cartridge. Mr. Benjamin
Taylor was so badly wounded, tlia't amputation ofboth
hands was necessary. He was otherwise severely
injured, and but little hepes are entertained of his re
covery. Mr. Freeman, a citizen of this place, had his
wrist broken, and Mr. Reynolds had a narroiy escape,
hi* ciotlies'bcing torn in pieces.—Ile wns considerably
burnt, bnt received no other wound*.—Floridian.

THE CENTRAL BANK AND ITS LATE CASH
IER.
The last Federal Union contains ah -address ‘"To
an Enlightened Public,” over flic signature of Charles
C. .Mills, late Cashier of tlie Central Bank, which at
tacks iu most immoderate terms, Gov Schicy, flic presi
dent of the Bank, and its present l asnicr. Thecircuin-
sUnices which have thus brought Colouid. Aiills before
the public, are, ns appears-from his publication, us fol
lows ; , _
"It i* well-known, tiiat I acted as Cashier of the
Central Bank for twelve months, and resigned that
office the first of April frost. On couiiung my ca*h, in
(leceiidier last, i found.about twenty-seven hundred
dollars over and aim* c what rny exsh balance called
for; which-amount 1 laid in the till of the iron rhest,
feeling confident‘that I would soon detect tlie error,
apd apply the amount to it;—but to my astonishin nt
(and even great, mortification ii foat wilt afford iny en
emies any. consolation) I was not enabled, by tlie most
diligent and laborious impsfigaiion, to find tlie error
up to the time of my resignation. From foe invesu-
gations made by me, 1 was convinced foe error was in
account with *oine Bank, or with some individual de
posited or that it liad originated' in the count of mon
ey in settlement with tho agent of tlie Augusta Banks,
(with whom I had frequent large settlement*,) or oth-
cr.individual. Ifin account with any of tnc Bonks, 1
knew a comparison ot aeconuts would show it,-or if
in eifoer of the other supposed cases, 1 believed time
would discover it, anil the amount* be placed where it
^ rightfully Irelonged. Thus rested tlis matter, until
*oigctunc in November hist, when it seems flic saga
cious "RHODA-Vf” discovered foe great secret, which,
was found to ire an error with tlie Bank of Columbus,
nnaie by my having inadvertantly placed- an item oi
thirteen hundred and sixty-five dollar* to the debit in
stead 'of the credit side of flte account, tntts making an
error of double that amount.”
Wlien foe error was detected by Air. Greene, he no
tified Col. Mills of its existence, who canto to the Bank
slaU-d that he would refund the money, but did not do
it at tlie time, and left early next morning for Alabama,
without giving flie directors uotice of bis intended mb
setico. Tlie directors inct, and as iu duty bound, re
ported the matter to the Governor; and W, iu compli
ance with his official obligations, in two'days alter no
tified Colonel Mills’ securities that 'a suit upon his
bond would be commenced to recover flie amount due
from him. The fact that CoL Mills had never infor
med the directors that he had f270ffm bis hand* be
longing to flif Bank, but left foe Institution with tlie
money in his pocket, was calculated to create a sus
picion in t. eir minds that all was not as fair as it should
have been, and it cannot be wondered At fliey should
have taken some stepAto enforce iu recovery. •
But our object is not to account far the ill blood
which appears to existfbetween Col. 51ills and •o.»«»e
of the officers ofthe Bunk—they can attend tothcirown
affairs—but we cannot permit so violent, anfl .aa R ap
pears to us, unwarrantable an attack up<m tlie Ciuel
Magistrate dftlie State, lo pass unnoticed. Col. Mill*
charges flic Governor with being under flic control el
flie i’residenf of the Bank. This' assertion is made
with mucli'bolducss, but the Colonel fail* to give anj
.evidence Upon which to found it. For one, we have
no hesititiOn in saying that such evidence cannot be
produced. We know Gov. Schley' well; ancf .ws
know that if there ever was a Gov'Hoi who acted with
independence, and \v1to discharged his duty without
lear or favor, fie is foat one.' It is ideal to tell any one
to whom Gbv. S. is personally kirpwn, that he can
■be made the '‘willing instrument” to cany out the pri
vate purposes of any man; and such, a charge will be
treated with the contempt it deserves Gov. Schley,
whenever called upon, or whenever occasion requires,
gives his sentinicnU relative to men and things with a
frankness that docs honor to his character; but this i*
looked upon by some persona os a loible ; and hence
the rantoroua spirit manifested by tho*e whom be does
not couceive to he particularly entitled to his confi
dence. . .
\Ve have for some time known that there vvere a
few individuals claiming to belong to the Union Party
who from personal considerations were inimical to
Governor Schicy, but forir numbers are fan and
llieir influence inconsiderable. M e regard die pub
lication above mentioned a* having been moulded to
accomplish the purposes of these persons, bntwc flunk
R will fail, in its object. Col- Mills writes under the

The question is, whether a man who haepjrpvedhini-

But it is aaid that Gen. Houston, knowing the pop-

to make foe best bargain that cfauld be made with
him, as there conldbe no advantage in detaining him,
and there was at least a chance that a spark ol honor

pon Whim this signal act of mercy was bestowed.
•Oli tlie other hand, it is averred that no visitor cotilJ
he so unwelcome to Tornel ns Santa Anna, of whose
execution he would rejoic? to hear. Tornel very ni ;
turally would riifoer be flic locum tenens of the throne,
and in confirmation of'his hostile feeling* to Saute
