w« have made arrangements that will enable us at all

are large Storehouses, calculated for the storing of cot

to forward cotton inland or coastwise, are not excel-

Come, take in our father’s best parlor a share ;
You’ve been kept long enough at the purse’s, I trow.
Where the angry lakes roar, and ffie northern winds
blow;
Come in—we’ve a pretty large household, ’tis true,
But the twenty-five children shall make room for yon;
A present, I see for onr sire you have brought.
To add to his dessert—how kind was the thought—
A treat of ripe berries, both crimson and blup,
And wild flowers to stick in his button-hole too;
The rose from your paririe—the nuts from your tree ;
What a good little sister!—come hither to tne.
You’ve a dowry, beside, very cunningly? tored.
To fill a nice cupboard, or spread a broi.d board;
Detroit, and Chicago, Ann Arbor, and more—
For the youngest, methinks, quite a j- lentitiil store ;•
You're a prog, I perceive—it is true '.o the letter.
And your sharp Y ankee sisters will ’ikeyou the better.
But where arc your Indians, so feeble and few—
So fall’ti from the heights where their forefather*
grew!
From the forests they fade—o'er the waters that bore
The names of their baptism, they venture no more;
Oh, soothe their sad hearts, ere they vanish afar,
Nor quench the faint beam of their westering star!
Those ladixs who sit on the sofa so high,
Are the stateliest dames of our family;
Your thirteen old sisters—don’t treat them with scorn;
They were not able spinsters before you were born;
Many stories they know, most instructive to hear—
Go, make them 11 court’sy, ’twill please them, my dear.
They can teach you the names of those great men to
spell
Who stood at the helm, when the war-tempest fell;
They will show you the writing that gleam’d to the
sky,
In thp year seventy-six, on the fourth of July;
When the flash of the Bunker Hill flames was red,
And the blood gushtd forth from the fields of dead.
There are some who may call them both proud and old,
A nd say they usurp what they cannot hold;
Perhaps their bright locks have a sprinkle of gray—
But then, little Michy, don’t hint if, I pray!
For they’ll give you a frown, or a box on the ear,
Or send you to stand in the corner, I fear.
They indeed bore the harden and heat of the day,
But you’ve as good right to your penny as they;
Tho’ the price ofour freedom they better have known,
Since they paid for it out of their purses alone, '
Yet a portion is saved for the youngest, I ween.
So, hold up your head, with the “old thirteen.”

Toads.—It is a common notion that these beautiful
little animals suck poison from tho earth. Now. al
though this opinion is a fallacy, the toad is. neverthe
less. one of the most useful animals in the world to the
gardener. The toad lives entirely on animal food,eats
it alive, and cares not a fig for Dr. Graham. The
grub* and insects which ha devours are very injurious
to the young plants which ara cultivated tor the table.
He comes out at night when the dampness of the ait
is agreeable to him, an<7 when his* .prey is likewise
wandering abroad, committing their depredations, and
watches them as eagerly as iveat watches for mice. It
is said that a few dozen toads will destroy all the cab
bage worms in a whole acre of land; that is planted
with cabbages, and he the means of saving die young

Old Josh Adams and his ’76 Coat.—A Yankee
Story-—Well, how do dew ? I’m right glade to see
you: Iswowlrather guess I can say someting a-
botif the Revolution busicess! pretty good reason
lew—by jingo. My farther, old Josh Adams, as well
known as the City Hall, was born in Bos'on—didn’t
die there,’cause he died in Philadelphia. He Used to
wear the old genuine ’76 coat. Hide cut down to suit
the fashion—made it a kind of razee—one might have
known the old man a mile off. If it hadn’t been for
Cousin Gitss, he’d have been living to this’erc day,-
Yon may see Guss in Broadway—any of you know
him 1 dressed like a peacock, an’got whiskers big
enough to stuff a sofa bottom. He went down t’other
day to see the wild beas.s iu the Bowery—just as he
wascomiu’ away met a hull squad of little children
cornin’ in—when they saw cousin Guss, if theydid’ut
squeal like ten thousand devils. The old triait says,
“What’s the matter,youngsters?" ‘ O,dear papa,
see they’ve let one of the monkeys losoe !*’ Cousin
Gussjdid’nt show his face in Broadway for a week af
ter. , '
Guss then told the old man he must nave his coat
cut again, and altered to his fashion—so coaxed old
Josh to lethiin take it down to his sufferer, as ho call
ed him down in Liberty street. Well the good-nqtur-
ed cld critter said he might—when he got it back,
such a looking tiling as it was—might have fallen
down and. worshipped it without breaking the com
mandments.—Whep we saw it, we all laughed—sis
ter Jerdida she snickered right ont. The old man
looked at it for about a minute—didn’tsay a word by
jingolhe tearsiolled outof his eyes as big m hailstones
—he jest folded it up—put it tinder bis pillow; laid
himself down 011 tho bed, never got up again. It
broke bis heart—He died of a curtailed coat.
The old man used to tell such stories about the
Revolution. 1 rather guess he could say a little more
about that matter than most fojks ’Bout eight years
ago lie went to Boston, when Lafayette wns there ,
they gave a great dinner it Faunal Hall When the
Major heard old Josh Adams was in Boston, ho sent
hint a regular built invitation; the old man went.,
wore the ’76 coat, (that is before it was down though.)
by and by they called upon flte old man for a toast-
up he got, and says he. “Here’s to the herose of the
Revolution, who fought, bled and died for their coun
try, of which I was one!” When old Josh said that,
they snickered right out. ■
There’s one storv the old man used lell about Bos
ton, that was a real snorter; he always used to laugh
before he began He said, down on Long wharf'

Quite a Heroine.—Under this head, the Fincastle
Democrat gives an account of the ingenious escape
cf one of the counterfeiters, whose conviction and
sentence to ten years imprisonment, we noticed a few
days since. Heath has made his escape. The Dem
ocrat relates the circumstance as follows: “The wife
of the prisoner was admitted by the jailor to an inter
view with her husband, representing that she was a-
bout to leave this country, and that itwasthela»ttimo
slie c^pccted to see him. After some time,.the jailor
returned to the prisoner's apartment, and found Mrs.
Heath" fa* was supposed,) ready to leave herjhusband;
wrapped up in a cloak and her "face concealed by her
bonnet. Tims attired she was suffered to pass out of
the prison, all the time sobbing; aloud in tho greatest
apparent distress. On visiting the jailfnext morning,
instead eff the convict, Mrs. Heath was found neatly
dressed in the clothing of her husband, who had been,
permitted to pass out, in the manner described, the
night previous. The heroine, after a loud laugh, ex
plained to her visiter, the secret of her husband’s
escape."
A smart re'. 'rt.—Lord Erskine declared in a large
party, in which Lady Frskine and Mr Sheridan were
present, “that a wife was only a tin canister lied to
one’s tail:" upon which Sheridan presented Lady
Erskine with.these lines:
“Lord Ersk sic at woman presuming to rail
Calls a wife‘a tin canister tied to one's tail.’ .
And fair Lad v Anne while the subject he carries on
Seems hurt at his Lordship's degrading comparison:
But wherefore degrading! considered aright, .
A canister's -.relished and useful .and bright;
And should mrt ite original purity hide, _ '
That’s the fault of the puppy to whom it is tied."

Short Chimneys vs. Tall Chhrmcys—k discovery
has been made ip chimney building, which is likely fo
put a stop to the building of lofty Pillars for thefpttr-
pnsc of carrying a' va y engine smoke from manufac
tories The only scientific reason assigned for build*
ing these loftv,stacks is, that the increased height gives
an amazingly increased draught. But it was found
that a chimney of the ordinary height or at most sixty
or seventy feet, which is so constructed as to have
tbeTfeiride ofthe flue narrowest at the bottom, and
gradually widening as itascend^has the effect of in
creasing the draught, and burning the smoke- in a
much sreater degree than a tulf flue on the old princi
ple. A chimney built on the new principle has the
appearance outward of a tower, as it stands upon a
large base, and carries its width on the outside to th*
very top. Tho cost is not one-third of that of one of
the "tallest chimneys, and the danger fr uit foiling is
comparatively small. Messrs Clarke cotton spin
ner* in G’asgow, have completely proved the super
iority ofthe new system, having recently built a chim -
neyon that principle about seventy feel high —Liver-'
