Dr. Hawke*, the Rectot*: —
I knew a widow. very poor,
Who four smallcfiifdren bad.
Thu bldest wns but six years old—
A gentle modest lad.
4n-l very hard this widow toiled,
To feed her children four ;
An honest pride, the woman felt,
Though she was very poof.
To labor, she would leave her home—
For childreu mnst be fed ;
And glad was she when sh^eoulu buy
A shilling's worth of bread.
And this was all the children had
On any day to eat;
They drank their water, rat their broad,
lkut never tasted meat.
One day when snow was falling fast,
And pierring wns the air.
I thought that l would go and SCO
How these poor children were,
Ere long. I reach’d their cheerless home,
’Two* search’d by every breeze—
When going in, the eldest child
1 saw upon hi* knees.
I paus’d to listen to the boy—
He never raised bis head :
But still went on and said—“ Oire us
1 his day our daily bread.' 1
I waited 'till the child was done.
Still listening as he proved—
And whan lie rose, I ask'd him why
The Lord’s prayer ue had sajd T
“ Why, sir," soul he, 11 this morning when
My mother went away.
She wept, because she said *he hsd
No bread lor us to day,
She said xve children now must starve,
, Onr father being dead—•
And then I told her not to cry.
For 1 could get some bread.
“ Our Father; sir, tiie pr ayer begins,
Which makes me think that hk,
A* we have got no father here,
Woold our kind father be.
«• A*nl then you know, the prayer, air, ten,
Ask* (Jod for bread each day ;
So in the c orner, sir 1 went, <
And that’s what made me pray.’*
1 «juickly left that wretched room.
And went with living feet.—
And very soon was bark again,
Willi food enough to eat.
“ / thought God heard me," said the boy :
1 answered with a nod—
f could not speak, but much 1 thought
Of that boa’s faith in God.

The Barings have sustained immense losses lately in tlxo
opium trade, .as well a* by their American securities. Wo
const.icr their failure inevitable a* soon an the crash of tho
United States Bank and its forlorn condition in this country
reaches England. Is it not the hope of securing old Lord
Ashburton against this approaching calamity, thgt Lodge A
Austin and Atjtbrose Lanfear are buying nrf the cotton and
sterling exchange they can pay for by kites on T. W. Ward
o! Boston. Prime, Ward A King, and Goodhue fc (!o, .*f
New York. Oh. we will see fun among these kiter* and
cotton thieves hy nod by. The devil £fi)s not yet commen
ced wanning the fortftfhce for them.
These gigantic gamblers in cotton and exchange have re
cently gone into the market with renewed energy to pur
chase cotton and exchanges, at the United States Bank did
three years ago, ami their prostration will be as »ir*aL
There i** rto end to their kites on Boston and New York for
60 day. but the wants created by the trade of thp country.
With the piipeeeds of these kites they have, at pTf^n
gents in New Orleans, Mobile. Charleston and Savannah,
purchasing cotton end exchange on terms which prove they
arc in a desperate situation. They do not confine their ^iin-
rnents to Liverpool, but send large lots for the French mark
et to Havre. This is to give the Barings the appearance of
wealth and the power to draw, and all to bliudfold the Bank
of England and conceal their real weakness. The vgry
fact ot their rushing into the cotton and exchange market,
at this precarious rime, with the appetite of hungry wolves
is the strongest evidence of their weak and desperate situa
tion. Lord Ashburton will play the xnmc game with the
Barings which Mr. Biddle played with the United States
Bank; and as soon as he can extract the one million three
hundred thousand pound* sterling, which he loaned them,
the house will fall like a rotten oak before a tornado.—We
have not the least doubt but Lodge h Austin, ettd Ambrose
are now making their last haul in the way of cotton stealing
to indemnify the old mushroom lord, who retains too much
of the old Hhylock blood to let honor come between him
and his pound of flesh. It will be lecollcctcd. when giving
a sketch of the Ibriofi some time ago. w e mentioned art
instance of their arrogance in stimulating the Bank of En
gland to discredit the bills of branch house* on the princi
pal, under the plea of preventing kiting. Thu treasure v as

from passing in Batiks: ns the$e houses had various branches
abroad—But here wc find the Barings daily soliciting cred
it from our insolvent bank to enable them to keep their
heads above water in England! These agents are drawing
i on each other in all directmn*. and their effort* arc made
at present under sacrifices which inuut awaken the suspi
eionsofthc mn*-t creeulons. The Barings will soon find them-
selves in the r md itioti of the Irishman who said he lo$t 25
per cent, on all h ; s speculations. “How did you sustain©
yourself so long,” observed hs friend,. “Why I would
have broken long ago.” said our countryman, “but for fl*<f

I» i* understood in the city, that Mr. Jam©' Mort’sen. of
the &nn of Motrifim, Cryder A Co., has accepted tha agen-
W llos, Ac. Ac. want relief, and they go into the cotton
stealing business. Would not the people, who ate robbed
by these scoundrels, be justified morally in taking revenge
out nf the persons of these men, and all the aider* and abet
tors iu New Orleans? Would not a man be justified iu
shooting down, like a inad dog, the tiling whom he found
carrying off hi* property in the night. Is it not infinitely
more unjust, mean aiul despicable, for Lodge A Austin,
Ambrose Lanfear. Purton, Gardner, Burke, Peters, Mill-
turn, Yorke, nnd the oilier New Orleans speculators, to
thu* plunder our people while asleep. We fear that the
people wiH be compelled to res« rt to personal violence, to
protect themselves from the high handed rubbery of three
list and credit system thieves, they have the means of brib
ing Legislatures and Governors—and they use the means
Leely. We doubt whether any thiug but violence can ar
rest them. The Legislature ol*Georgia once passed h law,
nnd the members immediately took advantage of it. and se
cured to themselves the whole Yazoo country. They issu
ed scrip, sold it and pen keted the money—and thus made
the law which enabled them to rob the public. But sever
al of the members of that Legislature were shot down like
dogs, for their rillany. Yet they played only the same
game which these New* Orlcan* swindlers are now carry
ing on.
It will be seen from the following table, that the Bank
of New Orleans have increased their circulation and de-
posites, four and a half millions riuoe October last, with
their specie has diminished nearly on© hundred thousand
dollars. It is not, therefore, surprising that this paper de
preciates. But the more it depreciates, thp better lor the
interest of the
who surround them. It ttm paper
get a* low as 20 cent* on the dollar, Samuel Peters’ Shadow
could easily pay his debts, and have hi* brick hou«e* in the
Second Municipality tree. The genteel loafers and ignorant
mushroom men hauls, vthu have been made ouifnt Bank cred
it*, will no doubt think that our thoughts run in a very uu-
fashinable channel—where a thick-beaded Bank Attorney’s
ould *et down n® decidedly vulgar. But we look bevond
these cobwebs of society; and wbeu we find a thie! with his
hand in our pocket, we will not treat him with the politeness
of a French hangman.
