The Revolutionists have established an independent ’Gov

of events. He would probably lake possession of tks island,
end the expected failure of the Governmant to pay the in

purpose.
The black population has been fighting for a Republican
form of Government, instead af a Military Despotism; and

when ilio.oo acts have lor their object the ascendan
cy «>f our political principles.
The great struggle which is to decide the fate of
the Denwh tatic Patty has commenced, and a de
parture fmm the rule to which 1 have just adverted,
woti'il. it seems to ine, necessarily occasion an im
mediate disbandment of our forces, and a surrender
of the field to the enemy. FuH well do our oppo
nents know this, and they see or fancy they see
the accomplishment of this result so desirable 10
them in the difference of opinion said to exist among
prominent members of the Democratic Party, in
reference to the Annexation of Texas to the United
States,
Grant, if you please, that Mr. Van Buren thinks
that Texas should not be admitted into the Union.
Mini! Inutilities with Mexico have ceased—and that
Mr, Calhoun taking the opjmsite ground thinks
that the Treaty should he ratified, without wailiug
to obtain the consent ol Mexico to its provisions, is
the mischief created.by this apparent contrariety
of sentiment, in reference too merely to the best
plan of acquiring Texas beyond the reach of ordi
nary remedies. If indeed it be, I have greatly
overrated tlie discernment and patriotism of the
Democratic Party. Both of these distinguished
men are in favor of Annexation, and disagree only
as to the best plan by which the lone star of the
West is t<i be added to our bright galaxy of Stales.
Is it piwsihle to suppose that the Democratic Party
wil'nlmHon its party organization, nnd without a
struggle commit to the Whigs all the vital interests
of the country, because two of its favorite leaders
tiappen not to view every aspect in which a single
question presents itself in exactly the same light;
such fatuity would he unpardonable. May we
not flatter ourselves then with the hope that the
National Convention shortly to assemble in Balti
more, will be able to reconcile parlies—that a plan
mavyet be suggested wniclt shall allay all heals,
efface the memory of all past grievances—secure
the nation from longer misgovernment. and protect
the people against the threatened misrule of the
Whigs ? I liettpealt far these reflections the calm
and dispassionate consideration of our political
friends, and as I seek not to shuc the responsibility
of their expression at this perilous juncture, sub
scribe mvself.
Respectfully, your oh’l. serv’t.

Resolved, That the Democratic Party of this
District, will use all fair and honorable means to
defeat the election of Henry Clay to the Presi

Resolved, That we tecommend to Democrats

success of the candidates of the Democratic Parly,
for President and Vice President of the United

for a more thor >ngb investigation.
We present John J. Viugun and John Tyler, for the of
fence of an affray, committed daring the present term of the
Court, and which we have not had an opportunity to notice
specially.
We find that the Patrol laws have recently received but
tilde, if any attention; ind we now recommend their most«

peace of community, require a strict compliance with this
suggestion.
We have given the Poor School Laws, passed at the last
session of the Legislature, tlie mosi patient and respectful
