The stock market to-dav was more active
than for several weeks, anil white great im-gu
larity marked the dealings further progress was
made in a downward direction, the market
showing none of the buoyancy of last week.
The late advance, with high figures of the open
ing, offered a temptation to holders to realize,
which was indulged in to a large extent, and
lionrs attacked the list vigorously, aided by re-
ports of rale cutting in the Southwest and
speculative failures on the other side. Money
worked harder than usual of late, and in the
absence of large tenders, rates were bid up to 7
per cent. Loudon was buyer of its specialties,
Heading being the special favorite, but the
pi-essure of stock for sale forced the stock off
with the remainder of the market. There whs
considerable buying on reported earning.
Tra lei's quickly got over to the bear side, and
by persistent hammering prolonged the decline
until lute In the afternoon, and unfavorable
rumors were freely mode use of to depress it.
Vanderbilt stocks were very well held through
out ns well as some of the sitociaities and
coalers But Canada Southern was remarkably
strong in the late rally, and is the only stock
showing material net advance this evening.
I-irst sales were made at advances over Satur
day's final prices, extending to >4 |ier cent, gen
erally, but Reading was exceptionally ..trong.
WL.II a gain of ' pur cent. Early de dings were
very heavy, and under pressure to sell, prices
gave way immediately, and the early Improve
meat was more than lost in the first half hour.
The market then became more quiet, and fluc
tuations became leas marked, but the general
tendeucy wa*s downward until 1 o clock, when
decided weakness was again shown, and before
2 p. ut. the lowest prices of tile day were
reached There was some improvement after
that time, but It made little progress until after
delivery hour, when by extensive covering anti
renewed buying for long account material re
action was brought about, Canada Southern,
Western Union and Reading being the most
conspicuous Tie close-was active anti strong.

Green A Oo.'s report on eotton futures says:
“The contract market for cotton lias been quiet
but firm all day, and shown quite an advance
on values. The combination of unpromising
crop reports from the Mississippi district un
questionably creates a nervous feeling, and
snort setters who ventured to put a line out at
tiie close of last week were generally covering,
besides which there was some new buying or
ders from Europe and the South to help swell
the demand, and take eare of the moderate
offering. The total gain was about 10 points
but a small reaction left the close only 7 points
above Saturday evening, with the tone steady.

Chicago. Sept. 6.—The wheat market was ilull
and fluctuations within narrow limit*. Trade
was light and outside news without special
weight. The general range of prices was Wo
under the closing yesterday, but it was Utile
above yesterday's average. There were Very
few outside orders, and local scalpers were dis
gusted at tho dullness of the market. Corn v.-un
mainly in the hands of- < abn-rs. t here being but
few outside orders and no disposition on the
part of prominent local houses to extend their
lines largely eith-'i nay. Price changes were
rather frequent within )$c range, and the feel
ing. though somewhat imscttled, was firmer,
cash and September especially showing strength
and )4®Btio advances. More deferred deliveries
closed about )$c better than yesterday. Tuken
all around there was a pretty bullish undertone
to the market, but the smaller class of holders
manifest a desire to let go on every little bulge
of moment. Surface indications do not show
that there are any large ojierators iuten sted
heavily on the bull side. Oats were weak early,
owing to sidling out bv parties who had bought
yesterday, but with lighter estimated receipts
for to-morrow, decrease in the supply in sight
and some good investment buying toward the
close. The speculative market firmed up again.
Provisions were quiet, .short ribs for September
ami October delivery again rather monopolized
attention, though after a brief spurt of life early
in the day they rather sympathized with the
general market.
