WALTER Q. ORESUAM.
OF INDIANA.
Judge Gresham is one of the men boomed
for the P. esidency. Nobody questions his
■north and his strength in the Republican
party is not only great, but in all probabil
ity much greater than appears to-day.
Walter Quintin Gresham was born near
Corydon, Ind , in 1833. He attended Bloom
ington University,but was never graduated,
and subsequently read law at Corydon.
His professional career was highly success
ful, and in 1830 he was elected to the State
Legislature, taking a prominent part in the
war legislation of the period. He entered
the army as a Lieutenant Colonel and rose
to the rank of Brigadier General. In
the fighting before Atlanta he was seriously
wounded in the left leg five inches below the
knee. On his way home he was obliged to
stop at New Albany, wnere he remained a
year before his recovery. The tibia was
fractured, and though the leg was not am
putated, he still has to walk with a cane
and frequently suffers intense pain from
the fracture, which gives the leg a decided
curve. Subsequently to his partial recov
er!, as military comander of the Natchez
Hi trict, Gresham put down the cotton
thieves infesting it, and was instrumental
in sending many of the speculators back to
the North.
At the termination of his military career
Mr. Gresham resumed his law practice in
New Albany, and in 1866 ran unsuccessfully
for Congress. Gen. Grant, when President,
w.shed to make him Secretary of the Inte
rior, but that being impracticable, he
named him as Collector of New Orleans.
The appointment was declined. Subse
quently Mr. Gresham was appointed United
States District Judge for his district.
In 1880 he was an unsuccessful can
didate for the United States Senate.
When Postmaster General Howe died in
1883, President Arthur tendered the port
folio to Judge Gresham, who served as
Postmaster General for nearly a year.
Near the close of President Arthur’s term,
on the death of Secretary Foiger, Judge
Gresham was appointed Secretary of the
Treasury, an office which he held for a short
period. In October 1884. he withdrew from
the Cabinet altogetb.„-, and in December of
that year, Judge Drummond having retired
from the office of United States Circuit
Judge, President Arthur gave the appoint
ment to Judge Gresham.
Judge Gresham is over the medium
height, has dark hair and whiskers streaked
with gray, and a full, oval face. He is
judicial iu appearance, having a quiet, dig
nified manner, and a pleasant way of talk
ing. He is a mau of unimpeachable integ
rity, and staunch in his convictions and
£ui poses. His connection with the Repub
can party dates from its organization.
WASHINGTON’S FALSE TEETH.
An Interesting Letter Written by Rem
brandt Peale, the Art Lt. .
From the Nero York Critic.
A most interesting letter from Rembrandt
Feale, in which the wide difference between
his well-known portrait of Washington and
that painted by Gilbert Stuart is accounted
for, recently made its appearance in the
hospital Review, a little monthly published
iu Newark, N. J. It was discovered by Mr.
A. Q. Keasby, one of the leaders of the
Newark bar, in the course of a lawsuit for
ex-Se:iator W. H. Platt, to whom the letter
was addressed. Peale was born on Wash
i gton’s birthday, 1778. His portrait of the
firsi President, a copy of which accompa
nied his letter to Mr. Platt, was made when
he was less than 18 years-of age, and the
'following account of it was written nearly
<H) years afterwards (Philadelphia, March,
1854):
“Before the invention of porcelain teeth
on gold plates it was the practice of the
dentist to fashion them from blocks of sea
horse ivory. One of these sets was made
by the elder Gardette for Gen. Washington,
but it was fortunate for me that he sat to
me without them, as they were just finished
and were clumsy and uncomfortable and
distending his mouth, so that he finally re
jected them, and it was equally unfortunate
for Stuart that his portrait represents him
as he appeared fdr a short time with them—
looking, as Judge Washington informed me,
as if rinsing his mouth with water, and, as
Stuart himself informed me, preventing
him from holding any conversation (though
ignorant of the cause), so es ential to the
production of an animated likeness. I had
another advantage. By sitting so early as
7 in the morning I had his hair before it
Was curled and powdered by the barber—
after which hour Mr. Stuart’s portrait was
painted.”

FLYTIMET
The question is often asked whUt is a fly good for, and
the innocent little boy will answer:
First. It is one of the best things in the world to wake
you up early in the morning.
Second. It is also very friendly, for just assure as you get
a nice piece of molasses candy it is just as sure to come right
along and stick closer than a brother until j r ou get through
eating it, and insist on sharing if with you.
Third. It seems to thiuk that it makes a good seasoning,
as you come across it in your vituals regularly.
Fourth. It makes bald headed men say their prayers
backward.
Aud then the question is asked, how to get rid of them.
We can answer that question better than any one else, as we
have accepted the agency for the best thing in the shape of
Window Screens ever invented. To see them is to buy
them, and all we want you to do is to call at our store and
see what a nice thing they arc, and we know you will order
them lor the whole house.
