WASHINGTON AND ADAMS.
ow Esthetic Boston Mixed Up the
Busts of tha Great Men.
From the Baltimore American.
Boston, Mass., April 14.—The approach
of the celebration of Washington's inaugu
tion centennial has bad the effect of
f wakening a horrible suspicion iu the minds
f |Massachusetts solons t lat the old com
” ‘.wealth has, for nearly a century been
Vandalizing the memories of both V\ asn
inuton and John Adams by mistaking one
fnr the other in a remarkable manner. In
noric hull, in the state house, that pan
theon of Massachusetts, is a large bust,
which has tor vears been revered as that
the father of the country,
rrsodfathe.-s of the present generation had
it Dointed to them when children iu the old
Itate .ouso, and although all acknowledged
it to be a blander upon the original, if the
accepted portrait of the great patriot be
correct still it was revered for its age and
ported authorship. Sculptured about tbe
same time was another bust, which was
called John Adams, by some long-forgotten
criterion, and placed in a niche of houor in
cla Cnri t church. Yesterday, on motion
of a member of the House, the bust of
Washington was ordered photographed for
service in the com n ; cjlebratnm, and i s
remarkable likeness to John Adams caused
comment. The result was au inquiry, iv
sulting in the photographing of John
Adams, who, strange to say, looked wonder
fully like Washington.
Friday the legislature devoted its time
exclusively to "pickin -< ut G orge Wash
ington so that John Adams could be sent
home,” and, after consulting large numbers
of well known sculptors and artists, the
legislature decided that there had been a
blunder made. Adams had his face washed
and was take 1 from the sta'e house and set
~,, on the Christ church pedestal, and
Washington was taken from his scone of
sanctity and elevated into a more dignified
position in the state house.
* The discovery causes much amusement.
Twenty Pieces of Bone.
My little niece, left ma by her mother,
had one of the worst cases of white swelling
J ever saw. More than twenty pieoes of
bone came out of her leg, one piece being
. to ut tbe size of the small end of a walking
cane, and nearly three inches leng. The
hole left by taking these pieces out was ns
large as a good sized walnut. Sue was not
able to walk a step for eight months, and
was afterward compelled to use crutches
for nearly a year. The doctors said there
was no cure, and advised amputation of the
limb. This I would not consent to, but put
her to taking Swift’s Specific (S. S. S.),
leaving off all other treatment. It has
cured her sound and well, and I shall never
grow weary of speaking its praise.
