GUYTON NOTES AND NEWS.
Memorial Day to Be Observed by
Decorating the Graves of the Dead.
Tbe ladies of Guyton, with a force of
hard?, we re out Monday evening preparing
, e metery grounds for Memorial day.
Tbere are buried in the Guy tan cemetery
.he remains of some twenty-five or thirty
' ' t . r ate soldiers, who died of wounds at
fhaGuvton hospitals during the war, and
each Memorial day comes loving hands
rtrew flowers on the graves of those un
known soldiers whose lives were given to
tbe southern cause. . . .
Tins annual gathering promises to bo one
f unusual interest. The ladies have se
rired the services of Itev. H. S. Wingard,
f t , e ]( L ,;hol Lutheran church, as orator of
' , ' lav The selection of Rev. Wingard is
s j ...red a m .st appropriate one since
an humble part in tbe south’s
“ Hat struggle. Mr. Wingard was a inem
g! of Kershaw’s celebrated South
Carolina brigade of Lee’s army and, carries
tp. s -ars received in bonornblo battle. He
th „ man to tell the present generation of
lb sufferings of the confederate soldiers
during those four lone and eventful years.
Guytonians are looking for an unusual
number of visitors this spring anil summer.
Many parties aro arranging for board anil
lodging, and the demand for more houses
continues, and several nico ones are being
erected, which i an evidence of Guyton’s
b ri K bt ’future. Already several parties
have moved up, and tbe increase in travol
15 ver y noticeable. The slioo-ily, tne
Central’s pet truin, has been given
o very handsome now coach, and the
natrons of this train, while delighted, in
dulge the hope that the travel will
warrant the l entral in making this coach a
permanent fixturo of the train service.
Parties contemplating a change from the
city to the country resorts this summer will
not lac k for proper accommodations. The
Central’s officials have a proper apprecia
tion ol the suburban towns on their line,
aid will give all the necessary facilities to
aid those who desire to escape the heat and
dust of the city.
A gentleman in speaking of Guyton, said
they must have a park. No town the sin
of Guyton, which continues to grow as it is
doing, can get along without a park. Guy
ton is going to boa much larger place thau
she now is, and they must have some such
resort. There are many places in and
around the town which, with a little orna
ment, can be made attractive. It is said
pie matter will be discussed at the citizens’
meeting next Saturday night in connection
with the drainage question.
The Guyton Literary and Musical Club
bad a brilliant gathering at the residence
of the president. Col. R. J. Davant, on
Tuesday night. The essays, recitations and
music were very fine, giving many evi
dences of the rapid growth and Improve
ment of the society. The Misses Douglas,
Singleton and Hobby, a bevy of bright and
•handsome young ladies of Sylvania, and
Miss Mingledorff wore present, and con
tributed no little to the music of the occa
sion. Preparations aro now being made to
add a library, and the next move will be to
secure a hail to accommodate the increased
membership. Miss Mingledorff is a guest
of her brother. Rev. O. G. Mingledorff.
The Effingham Hussars are making
active preparations for their May day cele
brati n and competitive tilt with the
Screven Troop at Springfield. A large
crowd is expected, and the contest will be
one of the interesting features of the day.
In addition to the Effingham delegates to
tbe road congress, Capt. A. A. Winn was
selected, and his name was inadvertently
omitted from the report of the Springfleld
meeting.
Among the Easter decorations at Guyton
the artistic excellence of the decorations of
the Methodist church was the subject of
much flattering compliment by Guytonians
and the conference delegates. The decora
tions were the work of a corps of Guyton
ladies, under the su;>ervision of Mrs. R. J.
Havant, whose *ieft fingers wrought new
features in floral designs.

THE CITY’S SOUTHERN EXTENSION
A Proposition to Issue Bonds to Give
It tbe Privileges It Needs.
Editor Morning News: Under an act ex
tending the corporate limits of the city of
Savannah, none of the real estate lyiDg
south of Anderson street and west of East
Brad can be taxed by the city until Jan.
1, 1394. or over years from now. In
the meantime, the city is taxing all personal
property within the above limits;
the value of the property thus exempted
amounts to upward of $2,500,000. Property in
the southern limits of the city is rapidly in
creasing iu value, and the eyes of all citi
zens are becoming opened to its rapidly in
creasing values. By the time the right of tax
ation will accrue to the city the property will
probably tie worth upward of $5,000,000.
These figures are not strained, and their sig
nificance should be earnestly considered by
ail who have faith in the future of Savannah.
What is the council going to do about the
southern extension? Are the members of
that body asleep to what is going on? If
not, they should give attention to legisla
tion looking to Savannah’s future growth.
The council of 1837 exhibited its wisdom
in buying the Dillon tract, by which trans
action tbe city acquired the land for new
streets without expense, and sold only a
part if tbe remainder of the land at a large
profit. As to the rest of the streets, the
land that could have been bought and laid
out by the city for a mere song
in 1833 (when the city limits were
last extended), have now acquired
some valu", and by 1894 will prove costly.
The city is committed to this place both by
its maps and its ordinances a :d will be
obliged to buy tbe streets lator on; yet
though they are daily enhancing in value
our council is asleep to the future and ap
pears to be leaving the figures for a future
council to reckon, aid tax payors to foot
the reckoning. Although the southern ex
tension is a part of Savannah by its
laws and official maps, although
the personal property of the residents
in this loca'ity is taxed by the
city, although citizens have investei and
improved, and covered it with residences,
yet the city government has practically ig
nored it. Neither streets, a water supply,
electric lights nor p dice protection are
given it. Council’s very inaction lias boeu
a clog and an incubus. What the southern
extension has already become without these
advantages, sho.vs what a leap of progress
Savannah would take iu this direction if
they were accorded to it.
I hold upon the broadest principle of
public interest it is the duty of coun
cil to take the steps hereinafter in
dicated, and 1 suggest for it and
the people’s serious consideration, this
proposition;
To issue for these purposes 4 per cent,
bonds to the extent of $1,905,000. I can see
no reason to doubt their being placed at par
in a reasonable time. This would entail an
annual interest expense of $40,000, which
could easily be provided for in tho next city
budget. Consider this, if you will, a sec
tional question, the section will pay for
itself and retire its bonds in due time. With
$1,000,000 youcau open up streets, give it a
water system, an electric light system and
police protection.
The streets, I have shown, can lie bought
more economically now than hereafter; a
water supply, as has been demonstrated by
the present city water system, would prove
a s >u*Ge of income and not au expense, it
would more than Day for itself. The south
ern extension is already a source df ’ income
to the city through licenses, tax on personal
property and specific tax. Make these in
ternal improvements, and they will bring a
great and immediate increase of revenue to
the treasury frum these subjects of taxa
tion.
As to the increase in buildings, and im
provements, and in the value of real estate
generally that will result, it will be some
thing wonderful, indeed notshortof $5,000,-
000 to $0,000,000. The right t) tax real
estate will accrue Jan. 1, 1894. In the
thirty years which the bonds would run
this section would more than pav the inter
est and retire, by sinking fund, a large
amount of these bonds. Aside from these
considerations you wiii show the country
that Savannah has confidence in itself and
in its own future. Your own citizens will
not alone act in this confidence, but both
population and Investments will see this
from afar and conae and locate withiu your
borders.
Mr. Flagler’s investments in St. Augustine
have taught what wonders the pouring out
of capital within its borders can do to ani
mate a city of fossils. Tho value of the
rest of the city has swelled up to equal his
millions. I believe that the coarse 1 have
outlined would make Savannah spring for
ward with a mighty stride. The city’s en
ergies would bo unlocked and
loosed upon itself. Buildings and
residences would rise as if by magic and ac
tivity would prevail in the trades and react
iu every direction. What we have always
needed in Savannah is boldness, backbone
over a spirit of progress, and we want
council to take time by tne forelock and to
anticipate the future by a course consist
ent, and at the same time with souad finan
cial management and the prosperity of all
Us citizens. Progress.
Y. M. C. A. NOTES.

Living on the Keputaion of Others.
“Take everything that I have but my
good name; leavo me that and I am con
tent.” So said the philosopher. So say
all manufacturers of genuine articles to that
horde of imitators which thrives upon tho
reputation of others. The good name of
Allcock’s Porous Plasters has induced
many adventurers to put iu the market imi
tations that are not only lacking in the
best elments of tbo genuine article, but
are ofteu harmful in their effect?.
The public should be on their guard
against these frauds, and when au external
remedy is needed, be sure to insist upon
having Allcock’s Porous Plaster.
